Liverpool: Fans react to Georginio Wijnaldum message

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has lavished praise on his former boss Jurgen Klopp, in a birthday message to the German coach on Twitter.

The Netherlands international completed a switch to Paris St-Germain from Merseyside last week on a contract until 2024, following the expiration of his Liverpool deal [Sky Sports].

Wijnaldum was a key player for the Reds in his time at Anfield, registering 22 goals and 16 assists in 237 games across five years in the North West [Transfermarkt].

Signing from Newcastle United in 2016, he won four trophies during his excellent stint at Anfield. [Transfermarkt]

Celebrating Klopp’s 54th birthday on Twitter, Wijnaldum wrote: “You’ve been an inspiration to me these last five years and a fantastic boss. Thanks for always believing in me and supporting me in the amazing way you did! Wishing you a happy birthday and all the best.”

As you can imagine, loads of Liverpool diehards also flocked to Twitter to share their input after the midfielder’s post, pouring their hearts out to the Dutchman after his message.

Matt Wood's sparkling 196 the highlight of a good day for the Cidermen

A gloomy and overcast day off the field was brightened up by a sparkling innings of 196 from Matthew Wood at the County Ground where Somerset ended the day 433 for 5 in their vital championship match against Kent

Richard Walsh04-Sep-2002A gloomy and overcast day off the field was brightened up by a sparkling innings of 196 from Matthew Wood at the County Ground where Somerset ended the day 433 for 5 in their vital championship match against Kent. The twenty year old Devonian from Exmouth was in superb form as he cut and drove the Kent attack, who included Aussie star Steve Waugh, himself a former Somerset player, in their line up.Kent won the toss and put the Cidermen into bat, a decision they must have regretted as Jamie Cox and Wood put on 150 before the skipper was dismissed for 62.Mike Burns was out cheaply which brought the veteran Peter Bowler to the wicket. Together the oldest and youngest players in the side put on 98 until just before tea Bowler was out for 31.Keith Parsons and Wood pushed the score along quickly and both played some expansive shots. One classic cover drive by Parsons off Amjad Khan who was bowling with the second new ball pierced the field and left the Kent players as mere onlookers as it sped to the boundary.Wood brought up the hundred partnership in the ninety second over and seemed to be moving towards his first double century in the first class game until he tried to clip a ball over to the mid wicket boundary and was caught by David Masters, just four short of what would have been a thoroughly deserved milestone. With Parsons the young opener had added 121 for the fourth wicket to put his side in a strong position at 396 for 4.Parsons followed shortly afterwards, but before the end the good sized crowd were treated to some lusty blows from Ian Blackwell who particularly punished Min Patel on his way to an unbeaten 30 at the close of play.At the end of the day Kevin Shine told me: “This was an exceptional knock from Matt Wood, and how unlucky he was to be out just four runs short of his double hundred. We have had a good day and we are still in the ascendancy which is very pleasing. We scored good runs out there on a good paced wicket and we have still got some very attacking batsmen still to come.”He continued: “We have to be looking at getting 550 or even more depending on what happens tomorrow which will put us in a strong position. However we have got a tricky little first session in the morning.”The coach continued: “This has been a tough few weeks for us and it has been nice to see them bounce straight. This has been a thoroughly professional performance from the lads today.”A delighted Matt Wood told me: “I really am very happy with the way that I batted today, its just a bit of a shame I didn’t get to two hundred. Peter Bowler and Keith Parsons helped me to keep my concentration out there, and I had a bit of luck, which makes a change because we haven’t had too much of that this season.”

SAFC fans love Taylor news

Sunderland fans are delighted after Ellis Taylor signed a three-year professional contract with the Black Cats ahead of next season.

The Stadium of Light outfit will be gutted with how last season eventually panned out. Going in to the final few games, it appeared they were well on their way to earning promotion to the Championship from League One automatically, but a poor run of form condemned them to the play-offs where they lost to Lincoln City in the semi-finals.

As such, Lee Johnson and his team will be trying to put themselves in the best possible position to go up next term. During their preparations, they have been able to secure the services of Taylor for three years (safc.com).

The 18-year-old has yet to make his debut for Sunderland’s senior side (Transfermarkt), but looks as though he could have a big future ahead of him considering the excitement around this deal.

The news was shared on Sunderland’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

CPFC: Fans react to Patrick Vieira latest

BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone provided an update on Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Patrick Vieira on Thursday.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters gave their thoughts to the news on social media.

News broke on Tuesday regarding Vieira and Palace, with the two parties reaching an agreement in principle over the vacant managerial role.

Three days on and a move is yet to be announced, however, Stone admitted that there are no major issues and the Frenchman will be installed as Roy Hodgson’s replacement.

Vieira has been out of work since December after his sacking at Ligue 1 club Nice but now looks set to return to the dugout with the Eagles.

Recent reports elsewhere have suggested that Vieira could be handed an £80m transfer kitty this summer at Selhurst Park, with 11 senior players now out of contract at Selhurst Park.

Uncapped Melbourne grade batsman now part of England squad

ADELAIDE – England selectors have rushed an uncapped batsman fromMelbourne grade cricket into their Ashes squad as they try to avoidanother drubbing by Australia in this week’s third Test in Perth.

Michael Crutcher25-Nov-2002ADELAIDE – England selectors have rushed an uncapped batsman fromMelbourne grade cricket into their Ashes squad as they try to avoidanother drubbing by Australia in this week’s third Test in Perth.Paul Collingwood – a 26-year-old middle-order batsman – is the latestplayer through England’s revolving tour door to cover for injuryconcerns about Michael Vaughan (knee and shoulder) and John Crawley(hip).Collingwood has played 25 one-day internationals, including two againstAustralia, and has played grade cricket in Melbourne to stay in shapefor the World Cup in Africa in February and March.Paceman Andrew Caddick also remains in some doubt for the third Testwith a back problem after taking combined figures of 6-298 in theopening matches but selectors have sufficient back-up in Alex Tudor andChris Silverwood.Young spinner Gareth Batty is also on standby but he has yet to prove hecan play after a reaction from a shoulder injection. Can it get any worse?England coach Duncan Fletcher hopes not and insists the tourists arecapable of beating Australia despite losing the opening Tests by 384runs and an innings and 51 runs.”Everyone is mentally down when you lose a Test match, I don’t thinkanyone is mentally up when you lose a game,” Fletcher said today.”There are guys here who really believe they can and they want to beatAustralia.”England’s mood wasn’t helped by rain in Adelaide today which may havehelped the tourists save the Test had they managed to survive until thefifth day.But Fletcher dismissed the weather as an issue along with speculationthat his captain Nasser Hussain was beginning to feel the strain of thedesperate opening to the Australian tour.”That’s not the Nasser Hussain that I know,” Fletcher said.”I saw him this morning and he was still very enthusiastic and you cantell he is still up for it. There is no doubt about that.”The squad will arrive in Perth tomorrow without all-rounder AndrewFlintoff, who will remain in Adelaide for treatment to his troublesomegroin.

Everton: Moise Kean won’t be loaned out

The talk of the town at Everton right now is all on new signings. Will Rafa Benitez splash £55m on Ben White or bring a former rival to the club in the shape of Philippe Coutinho? Time will tell. However, we’ve now received an intriguing update on a player who could leave the Toffees. What’s the word? One of the biggest departures from Goodison Park this summer could be James Rodriguez who has attracted the interest of AC Milan.Though, to continue the Italian theme, Moise Kean could actually be set to stay in Merseyside. The Italy international spent last season on loan at PSG and they were keen on bringing him back next term. They’d made a loan proposal but in a fresh twist to the tale, Alan Myers provided a short 11-word update on his future.Taking to Twitter, he said: “Everton are not interested in a loan deal for Moise Kean.”With that in mind, it may take a permanent price of £40m to move him away from Everton.Supporters must be buzzingWhen it first became apparent that PSG were hoping to sign the forward on temporary terms again, fans were particularly aggrieved with the Everton hierarchy.[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-everton-news-benitez-kamara-romero-dumfries” title= “Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]They thought that they were being given the run-around by one of the game’s elite clubs, being made to look like fools in the transfer market. It was difficult to argue with that assessment. With Kean’s value so high, cashing in on him now could have funded some much-needed recruitment on the transfer front.Considering how oil-rich the Parisians are, they shouldn’t have had any troubles negotiating a price for the youngster’s services.Consequently, the decision from Benitez and co to cut short the potential of another loan spell should make supporters pleased. Indeed, the immediate reaction on social media supplements that viewpoint. One Everton fan claimed it was “excellent” while another said it was the best news they’d heard out of Finch Farm in a long time. A further supporter suggested they should keep him at the club, evidently rating the Italian’s abilities.A loan deal would have been particularly foolish and if a tempting bid doesn’t come in, Benitez may as well keep him. After all, this is a player with immense potential and someone who starred at the highest level last season.Kean found the net against Barcelona in the Champions League last term on his way to scoring 19 times in all competitions. To loan somebody with those numbers out would be a baffling situation. Everton are taking the right steps.AND in other news, Imagine him & DCL: Rafa may get Everton rocking again by buying “sensational” £50m gem…

Lowest match aggregates for Pakistan

Alas

Arshad Chughtai08-Nov-2002Alas! Pakistan’s test cricket has suffered so heavily recently that it appears to have reversed back to the primitive days. The Pakistan team has shown performances the likes of which were only exhibited by South Africa when entering test cricket but that was over 114 years ago. To the utter disbelief of their supporters the Pakistan team was bundled out for paltry scores of 59 and 53 in the two innings of the recent second test match at Sharjah against Australia. The aggregate is the lowest match aggregate for Pakistan in test cricket to date. The more gloomy aspect of these lowest aggregates was that it had come on the eve of country’s 50th Anniversary of playing the inaugural test match. (October 1952).Pakistan’s record lowest match aggregate is the fourth lowest aggregate ever in test cricket after South Africa’s 36 + 45 against Australia at Melbourn in 1931-32, 47 + 43 against England at Cape Town in 1888-89 and New Zealand’s 42 + 54 versus Australia at Wellington in 1945-46. Lamentfully Pakistan’s pathetic performance in the second test match at Sharjah also created only the second instance since 1945-46 for a test match to be wrappedup in two days. (the other instance being West Indes versus England at Leads in 2000).Presented below is a list of Pakistan’s lowest match aggregates (completed innings) to date:

NOTE: Surprisingly, despite Pakistan’s batting debacles on two of the above occasions, Fazal Mahmood, the architect of Pakistan’s six of their first eight victories, bowled his team to exciting victories (v England at the Oval in 1954 and v West Indies at Dacca 1958-59). Fazal Mahmood, on both occasions claimed twelve wickets in the match.

Celtic: Hoops face competition in Kevin Nisbet pursuit

Celtic face competition from Spartak Moscow and FC Krasnodar in their pursuit of Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet, as reported by the Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Celtic eyeing firepower ahead of 2021/22

Looking towards 2021/22, newly-appointed Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to acquire some extra firepower in the final third as he plots a Premiership title challenge this term.

Club icon Leigh Griffiths has agreed a new one-year contract extension, but talismanic figure Odsonne Edouard looks set to leave Parkhead in the midst of interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham [The Scottish Sun].

Frantically searching for potential alternatives, the Celts now may have to go all guns blazing to land one particular target after recent developments.

The Latest: Nisbet subject to Russian interest; contact has been made

Nisbet is attracting interest from Champions League qualifiers Spartak Moscow alongside fellow Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar [Daily Record].

These reports have been backed up by the 24-year-old’s agent Nicky Nicholson, who stated: “Krasnodar is really interested in Kevin. They first got in touch a few months ago, and since then we have been in touch.

“He also likes Spartak Moscow. They got in touch, we talked.” [Daily Record].

In January, the striker looked all but set to join English Championship outfit Birmingham City before a move collapsed at the final hurdle [Birmingham Mail].

The Verdict: Nisbet would be a tailor-made addition for Celtic

Due to a multitude of different factors, it is hard to see too many concrete arguments against Nisbet being an excellent prospective addition at Celtic.

Familiar with the Scottish top flight, deadly in front of goal and possessing a growing reputation on the international scene, he could become the ideal replacement for Edouard should the Frenchman leave Celtic this summer.

In 2020/21, the former Dunfermline talisman chipped in with a whopping 26 goal contributions from 44 appearances, with 18 goals and eight assists [Transfermarkt].

He recently scored his first goal for Scotland in a 2-2 draw with Netherlands last month [BBC], and it is easy to see why he was once labelled as ‘excellent’ by his current manager Jack Ross [The Edinburgh Reporter].

Always eager to get involved in attacking play, he recorded the highest average shots-per-game rate in the Hibernian squad across the 2020/21 season with 2.5 per match [WhoScored].

Celtic should absolutely look to tie a deal up for the forward before somebody else does.

In other news, Celtic are set to open talks with this Serie A ace.
