Fitzpatrick takes 100th wicket as Australia win by 59 runs

Australia claimed a 59-run win over India as fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick became the first player in women’s One-Day Internationals to claim 100 wickets in the match at Lincoln No 3 today

Lynn McConnell25-Dec-2009Australia claimed a 59-run win over India as fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick became the first player in women’s One-Day Internationals to claim 100 wickets in the match at Lincoln No 3 today.Fitzpatrick achieved the feat in her 64th match and ended the day with two wickets for 27 runs from her nine overs. She didn’t realise she had reached the mark until team-mates ran out with drinks while waiting for the new batsmen.”I didn’t know at all, my grandfather knows those sort of things but not me,” she said.”I knew it was close but I wasn’t worried about it. It won’t last long until someone else picks it up. But I suppose someone had to be first.”She said it had been hard work, especially in more recent times but she had great support staff with the side and while she has a dodgy back the team physiotherapist had been helping.Fitzpatrick has no idea how much longer her career may go but she insisted there were older players around, including English veteran Clare Taylor. She said the man who now coaches England, John Harmer had been influential in helping her change the action she had in her youth to give her longevity in her career and she was always looking for improvements in that.”Consistency is what makes a good bowler,” she said. While there was no wicket that stood out among the hundred, she did say that taking a five wicket bag at Lord’s that allowed a 5-0 series win had been memorable while she rated former New Zealand women’s batsman Debbie Hockley as the hardest player to dismiss. England’s Charlotte Edwards was another who was always a challenge.India will reflect on missing a golden opportunity to inflict what would have been only the second loss Australia had experienced at Indian hands.India bowled very well to keep Australia to 216 for nine wickets and started out boldly in their pursuit of the victory target.Captain Anjum Chopra and vice-captain Mithali Raj batted with great confidence against the experienced Australian attack several times hitting strong shots down the wicket. However, their loss was Australia’s gain as the innings folded quickly after their dismissals.Chopra shared in stands of 31 with Jaya Sharma for the first wicket and an entertaining 47-run stand with Raj for the second wicket before she became the first victim of Julie Hayes.Sunetra Paranjpe was bowled by Hayes for two and then the key wicket of Raj, for 36 off 51 balls was claimed when Raj hit the ball to mid-wicket when Lisa Sthalekar held the catch. Hayes finished with three for 28 from 10 overs.Australia’s innings was different to what normally might have been expected of a match with India. There were the usual solid efforts by Belinda Clark and Karen Rolton while Alex Blackwell completed a nervous maiden international innings, taking 25 balls to get off the mark but who went on to score 27 off 59 balls.Clark looked to be just getting into her stride when she became the first victim of Neetu David, the left-arm slow spinner whose first spell of seven overs produced two wickets for 14 runs and really put the pressure on the Australian batsmen.Clark scored 35 off 71 balls. She shared a 59-run stand for the second wicket with Melanie Jones and then as Rolton found batting partners disappearing she had to change her usual approach to be more of an anchor, especially in a stand of 74 for the the fifth wicket with Blackwell. They had to struggle through the spin attack and went long periods without boundaries. But they worked their way through it well and were starting to pick the scoring up when Blackwell was run out for 27 when attempting a nearly impossible single in which Reema Malhotra had time to make a clean pick up at mid-off and run to the bowler’s end to break the wickets.Rolton started to open out in an innings more in keeping with her traditional approach and brought up her half century off 65 balls and went on to score 68 off 82 balls before she was bowled by Jhulan Goswami when the score was 197.That set in train a minor Australian collapse as four wickets fell for 13 runs, with two run outs compounding the situation.David took two for 32 in her 10 overs. Bindeshwari Goyal worked well in tandem with David and had one for 28 from her 10 overs.

Malik named captain to keep stability

Despite the return of regular captain Shahid Afridi, the PCB does not want to change leaders in the middle of tours

Osman Samiuddin08-Feb-2010Shoaib Malik will captain both Twenty20 internationals against England in Dubai later this month despite the return of regular captain Shahid Afridi because the board does not want to change leaders in the middle of tours.Malik led Pakistan in the Melbourne Twenty20 against Australia last week, after Afridi was banned for two matches for tampering with the ball during the last ODI against Australia in Perth. That ban means Afridi will also miss the first game against England, on February 19, though he returns for the second game the following evening. But because the tour is so short, the PCB has decided against changing the captaincy and keeping Malik in charge. There has been speculation since Afridi was caught on TV biting the ball repeatedly that his future as the format’s captain is in doubt. Malik, Pakistan’s captain in all three formats as recently as last year, is being talked about as a candidate again but Wasim Bari, the board’s chief operating officer, played down such notions.”It is not a good idea to have one captain in one match and another in the next,” he told Cricinfo. “There is no point in doing it match to match so we decided, as it is a short tour, to just keep Malik as captain for both games. Afridi is our captain in the format. Had there not been a ban, there would not have been a problem.”Incidentally, Malik is reunited as captain with Yawar Saeed, who accompanies the side as manager once again. Exactly one year ago today Saeed was part responsible for a series report in which he wrote that Malik was a “loner” and “aloof” and that he should be replaced by Younis Khan as captain.Of equal significance is the absence of Intikhab Alam, Pakistan’s coach, from the squad and his future with the side. Most often the public face of Pakistan in defeat, Intikhab has come in for increasingly heavy criticism after the Australian tour. He is due to appear before a board inquiry committee later this week and Ijaz Ahmed, coach of the Under-19 side and who will alredy be in Dubai as head of the A side, will join the senior squad as a batting and fielding coach. Perhaps tellingly, Bari refused to be drawn over Intikhab’s future.”There is no word yet on Intikhab’s future. There is an inquiry being held at the moment and subsequently it will be decided. Ijaz is not the coach but the batting and fielding coach for the side there,” Bari said. “Daniel Vettori and New Zealand also toured without a coach and it has happened before so it is not so unusual.”

Liverpool must secure Erling Haaland

Earlier this season, it was revealed that Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards will be leaving his role at the club at the end of the season after being appointed back in November 2016.

During his time at the club, he has seen the Reds secure their first Premier League trophy in 30 years and sixth Champions League title under manager Jurgen Klopp, helping the Merseyside bring in a significant number of players that have played a big part in their recent domestic and European success.

With this in mind, Edwards has the chance to end his time at the Merseyside club on a massive high note by securing a summer transfer deal for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, who the Reds have been linked with in the past.

Since joining the Bundesliga club, Haaland has managed to rack up an astounding goals record of 71 scored in 70 games across all competitions with 19 assists also under his belt, which has led to former Premier League star Thierry Henry labelling him as a “lethal” player in terms of his goalscoring.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Despite suffering from some injury issues this season, the 21-year-old, who is currently valued at a whopping £135m according to Transfermarkt, has still managed to score 14 goals in 11 games. On that evidence, it’s clear to see why he was dubbed a “goal-scoring cyborg” by reporter Alex Truica.

Liverpool have managed to score more times (39) in the Premier League at this point in the season than anyone else and while Haaland may not be the most necessary transfer move for the Reds to make in the summer, it would surely be a dream move for Klopp to have someone as exciting and talented in his side that could rival Mohamed Salah for top goalscorer at the club.

However, if Edwards did make Haaland his final transfer masterclass before leaving Liverpool, it may not be as easy as he would hope. It’s recently been claimed that if the striker left Dortmund in the summer, his preferred destination would be Real Madrid.

Despite this, Liverpool have more than enough factors that Edwards could use to tempt the Norwegian with a move to Merseyside. The chance to play under Klopp and an opportunity to win big trophies are both tempting lures.

Combine that with the chance to play alongside Liverpool’s world-class players in front of a dedicated and passionate Anfield crowd in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues and this is surely a move that suits all parties.

Crystal Palace: Eagles eye Kieran Trippier

Crystal Palace have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, 90min report.

The Lowdown: Trippier’s situation

Trippier, labelled as ‘outstanding’ by Gareth Southgate, made the move to Spain from Tottenham back in 2019 in a deal worth just shy of £20m.

Since then, he’s made 83 appearances under Diego Simeone, helping Atletico win La Liga last season.

He’s out of contract at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in 18 months’ time and wanted a return to the Premier League in the summer, and it seems as if he won’t be short of options in 2022.

The Latest: Palace name-checked

90min shared a story on Wednesday afternoon, suggesting Newcastle are set to offer the 31-year-old a club-record contract.

They then go on to add that Trippier is still keen on a Premier League return, with Palace, Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester United ready to make a move, should Atletico be open to selling the England international.

The Verdict: Freedman would need to smash club-record

90min suggest that Atletico would demand a fee in excess of £39m from Newcastle for Trippier. Should Palace be the ones to make their move, you’d expect there would be no change to that fee, meaning Dougie Freedman would need to smash Palace’s club-record in order to bring Trippier to Selhurst Park.

Patrick Vieira currently has three right-backs to choose from, with Joel Ward a regular and winning the club’s Player of the Month award for October.

On that basis, if Palace are willing to go big in January, then perhaps they should look at bolstering other areas of the pitch, with just one left-back and no right midfielders at the club. [Transfermarkt]

Vaughan frustrated with South African influx

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, believes South Africa-born players should not be allowed to play for England

Cricinfo staff05-Mar-2010Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, believes South Africa-born players should not be allowed to play for England. Vaughan was critical of the number of players being imported “for many, many years” and said he had “a bit of a problem” with South Africans changing nationalities to further their sporting careers.”It’s a very tricky one. Someone like Kevin Pietersen made the decision very early to come over to England and he learnt a lot of his cricket here,” said Vaughan in comments reported in the . “[But] I do have a problem when the likes of Jonathan Trott [play for England], and [Craig] Kieswetter, who’s played for the South African Under-19s. I think in Trott’s case even played for the South African A team. Now that is where I have a problem, that we have almost got a ‘ship-in’ system of looking at talent, and a lot of them come over for the money.”It’s very, very difficult to stop them. I would like to see, in an ideal world, 11 complete Englishmen in the team but I don’t think that’s ever going to be the case.”Kieswetter’s rapid promotion to the England one-day side has again thrown the spotlight on the number of South Africans in the set-up and, despite suggestions from national selector Geoff Miller that it is an issue they are watching, he is unlikely to be the last.”It’s something that I’m going to have to put up with for my whole career, but I was born with a British passport, I’ve done my four years, I am British, and I don’t see it as an issue,” said Kieswetter after he scored 107 in the final ODI against Bangladesh. “Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but for me it’s about putting performances in on the park and helping England win.”In his autobiography, , Vaughan had accused the Cape Town-born Trott of celebrating with South Africa’s players after England lost at Edgbaston in 2008.Ian Botham, however, said he was fine with the number of imports. “These guys have made their home here to play for England and I don’t have a problem with that. The biggest problem for me in England is Kolpak, and that’s down to European law. What the Europeans have got to do with it, I don’t know. They don’t like cricket.”

Newcastle: Howe must axe Schar

Newcastle failed to build on any momentum a 1-0 win over Burnley gave them as they were hammered 4-0 by Leicester on Sunday.

The Magpies were torn to shreds by the Foxes in the second half as they conceded three goals from the 56th minute onwards, having gone 1-0 down in the first-half after Jamaal Lascelles was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.

Eddie Howe’s team are 19th in the Premier League table after 16 games and have only won one match all campaign, whilst they have also conceded the most goals (34) in the division.

Axe him

One player who struggled against Leicester was central defender Fabian Schar, who has had a difficult season at St. James’ Park.

He failed to make a single block, interception or tackle in the 90 minutes, whilst losing two of his three duels on the ground. The centre-back only completed 67% of his attempted passes and lost possession of the ball a whopping 24 times in total.

This came after he struggled badly in the win over Burnley. As per SofaScore, he lost 11 of his 13 duels and only completed 42% of his attempted passes. He also gave the ball away 20 times and made one block, whilst failing to make a tackle or interception.

Over the course of the season so far, he has lost the ball 110 times in seven Premier League appearances, whilst averaging just 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game. He has found a teammate with an abysmal 66% of his passes overall, showing that he has been dreadful with the ball at his feet this season with his failure to find the right colour shirt with his passing.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe recently admitted that he has been a fan of Schar from afar and claimed that he is a ‘fantastic’ player.

He said: “I have been an admirer of Fabian from afar for a long, long time. I think he’s a fantastic footballer.

“He has also shown his defensive resilience and mentality to not want to concede.”

This suggests that he believes there is a good player in there and axing him from the team for a few matches could benefit him. It could give him time to get back to 100% and be ready to come back into the XI and start showing why Howe thinks he is a ‘fantastic’ defender.

In the 2018/19 campaign, Schar averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.14 and made 5.3 tackles and interceptions per game at centre-back for the Magpies. This level of form may be what Howe is referring to with his comments, but his form this season is a far cry from this and that is why he should be brutally axed from the team, for now.

Deccan warns of IPL boycott over fixtures relocation

The Deccan Chargers franchise is reported to have served a legal notice on the IPL, and threatened a boycott of the 2010 tournament, over the issue of its home matches being shifted out of Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam

Cricinfo staff15-Feb-2010The Deccan Chargers franchise is reported to have served a legal notice on the IPL, and threatened a boycott of the 2010 tournament, over the issue of its home matches being shifted out of Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam. It has asked the IPL to reconsider its decision, failing which it would seek legal recourse and, it said, “be justified in withdrawing from IPL Season-III”.PTI reported that the notice, sent to Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, asked the IPL to reconsider its decision to relocate the games and claimed that the decision was taken “arbitrarily, unilaterally, without our client’s consent and in complete breach of the Franchise Agreement dated April 10, 2008”.It said the decision to shift the matches was against the objective of having franchisees from various regions of the country and against public interest and consequently was not acceptable to Deccan Chargers. The IPL announced on Saturday that it had shifted all Deccan’s home matches to Mumbai and Nagpur following the uncertainty in Andhra Pradesh over the separatist Telengana agitation. The decision had sparked outrage among political leaders – with senior government ministers calling for a pullout from the tournament – and in the Hyderabad Cricket Association but the franchise itself had so far responded with caution. The notice reiterated several issues raised earlier in the day by franchise chairman V Shankar. It said that the authorities concerned had given their permission for matches to be staged in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and even the Telangana Joint Action Committee, which is heading the separatist movement, had agreed to extend its support to the IPL.It asked how the IPL could relocate the matches to Mumbai in the absence of any similar assurance from the Shiv Sena, the regional chauvinist party that has said it won’t allow Australian players in the city following the racist attacks on Indian students in Australia. The Shiv Sena’s threat, it said, would adversely affect the performance of the Deccan Chargers team, which includes Australian players, if they are compelled to play in Mumbai. The IPL had initially announced only the shifting of the opening match between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders, which has several events on the sidelines, from Hyderabad to Navi Mumbai’s D Y Patil Stadium. This past week had seen several reports of IPL matches being moved out of Hyderabad. Concerns over the political situation in Andhra Pradesh have already resulted in the shifting of an ODI between India and Sri Lanka from Visakhapatnam last December, and two ODIs scheduled for Hyderabad, during England women’s tour of India in February-March, have now been split between Bangalore and Mumbai. Also, spectators were barred from entering the stadium for the first two days of the Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone in Hyderabad because of a perceived security threat.Deccan are the defending champions, having beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final in South Africa last year. The result was a total turnaround from their last-placed finish in the inaugural edition in 2008.

MS Gill criticises IPL for bending rules

The sports minister of India, M S Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercializing cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2010The sports minister of India, MS Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercialising cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game. In an interview with , Gill also questioned the conflict of interest arising out of the involvement of BCCI functionaries, with the IPL franchises.”… the BCCI, they have a direct interest as owners of teams, as people who have a direct benefit from it [IPL] and this is something very dangerous,” Gill said. “They have also used the rules against another rival league [ICL]. But the controlling body has to be for India, for cricket for the long term. It has to be totally uninvolved.”Lalit Modi, the chairman and commissioner of the IPL is the vice-president of the BCCI. N. Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary is a top functionary of India Cements, the company that owns the Chennai Super Kings franchise, while Kris Srikkant, the chief national selector is an ambassador for the Chennai side.”Those who are to make rules for everyone, for all aspects of the game and keeping in view the interest of the game and the country and the long term, have to be totally apart from being involved in IPL in any way,” Gill said.Gill accused the IPL of changing the rules and conditions to favour batsmen in the name of entertainment, thereby severely diminishing the bowlers’ role in the game. “The bowler is only the victim and the bat.. now you have mongoose bat. I look forward to a cobra bat. The boundaries have been shortened I think, as I hear. The whole thing is to entertain the masses. The bowler is just an instrument for this promotion,” Gill said.Gill cautioned that Twenty20 cricket posed a serious threat to the longer formats of the game. “The five-day Test is under challenge and you see nobody turns up for it, crowds have already been moved away. Even the 50-over game is reduced to Twent20. I sometimes say jokingly that we’ll go to T5 and then T1 and then half an over,” Gill said.

Newcastle: Howe must axe Schar vs Leicester

Newcastle have the opportunity to move level on points with 17th-placed Watford as they face Leicester in the Premier League today.

The Magpies, barring a win by four goals or more, will remain in the bottom three as the Hornets boast a stronger goal difference as it stands.

They come into this game off the back of their first win in the division last weekend against Burnley, beating the Clarets 1-0 thanks to a goal from Callum Wilson.

Liability

Whilst it was a superb result for the Magpies, one player did struggle in the game and should now be brutally axed from the XI – Fabian Schar.

He was a liability against Sean Dyche’s side and was carried through the match by the impressive Jamaal Lascelles at centre-back. As per SofaScore, he lost 11 of his 13 duels on the pitch, losing both of his battles on the ground and nine of his 11 in the air. This shows that he was a lightweight who was unable to compete physically against the Burnley forwards, which allowed them to dominate him throughout the game.

Lascelles, meanwhile, won an impressive 12 of his 14 duels overall. He won 11 of his 13 aerial battles and his only ground duels, whilst making six clearances and one tackle. The Magpies skipper showed that he was able to stand up and be counted for in the relegation scrap, which is more than what could be said for Schar.

Toon legend Alan Shearer previously called the defender a “danger” due to his ability to score from the defence, but he has only scored one goal for club and country since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. This suggests that he does not carry the same threat in the present, having scored six goals in his first two Premier League seasons for the club.

In half a dozen Premier League outings this season, Schar has lost 55% of his duels and made two errors directly leading to shots at Newcastle’s goal. This, along with his worrying display against Burnley, shows that he has been a liability for the club this term and highlights why he should be axed from the starting XI.

The £8.1m-rated dud managed to get away without his dreadful performance costing Howe against Burnley, as the team still picked up the win, but there is no guarantee that he will be so lucky a second week running. So, he should be taken out of the spotlight and placed on the bench to allow another player to come in and get a chance to perform.

West Ham fans flock to Lanzini claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have flocked to the latest update on midfielder Manuel Lanzini’s future as Newcastle United reportedly eye a January move.

David Moyes will be casting an eye on next month’s winter window in a bid to freshen up his options and keep West Ham’s hopes of a Europa League and FA Cup run alive.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

West Ham are also still well in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League with a top-four Premier League finish, with the general consensus being recruitment chief Rob Newman will target a striker, centre-half and possibly Jesse Lingard (The Evening Standard).

In terms of potential outgoings, there have been few reports by comparison, but 90min have now brought an update involving Lanzini and English top-flight rivals Newcastle.

According to their information, the Magpies are assessing a number of loan deals for next month and have drawn up a shortlist which includes the Argentine ace.

This comes as their new owners aim to strengthen Eddie Howe’s chances of securing survival for Newcastle with Lanzini firmly on their radar.

West Ham fans erupt…

Flocking to this claim, many West Ham fans shared their verdicts on Twitter, with most not wanting the midfielder to leave in January due to his turnaround in form under Moyes recently.

The tidy 28-year-old has averaged a higher passing accuracy than any Irons player with more than one start (93.7%) whilst also chipping in with two goals and an assist in 11 top-flight appearances (WhoScored).

Taking this into account, it’s little wonder many supporters either don’t want to see him loaned out or believe it won’t happen – with one fan even calling him ‘priceless’. Here’s how supporters reacted to this transfer claim involving Lanzini down below:
