Chermiti upgrade: Rohl readying Rangers approach for "dangerous" £1m gem

Rangers invested heavily in the summer but, given their current predicament, expect plenty more signings in January too.

During the summer transfer window, led by manager Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, the Gers signed 13 new players, splashing around £30m, a huge amount for a Scottish club.

The most expensive of these additions was striker Youssef Chermiti, arriving from Everton for £8m which could rise to £10m, their second-most expensive signing of all-time, but the Gers still appear light in attack, so could new manager Danny Röhl demand the addition of a new centre-forward he knows rather well.

Rangers' search for reinforcements

Even before appointing out-of-work Röhl, Rangers had taken advantage of Sheffield Wednesday’s predicament, signing winger Djeidi Gassama for a cut-price £2.2m in July.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The EFL Championship club entered administration this week, usually a dark day for any football club, but on this occasion it was a day of celebration, because it means Dejphon Chansiri is no longer running the club.

Supporters rushed to Hillsborough to buy tickets and merchandise, having been boycotting both, but there are serious ramifications, given that the Owls were slapped with a 12-point deduction, more could follow for failing to pay staff, meaning relegation to EFL League One appears inevitable, while a new owner still has to be found, all why Röhl walked away in July.

Thus, for as long as the administrators remain in charge, their task is to raise as much cash as possible, which includes selling players.

As a result, Sports Boom are reporting that Röhl is targeting a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Bailey Cadamarteri, with the new boss telling the Glasgow side to put together ‘a proposed deal” for the youngster.

They add that Röhl is ‘eager to bolster his attacking options’, while adding that the German coach was an ‘influential figure in Cadamarteri’s development’, thereby potentially set to take advantage of the financial crisis in South Yorkshire by snapping up a bargain

So, could the 20-year-old soon be swapping Owlerton for Govan?

What Bailey Cadamarteri would bring to Rangers

Born in Leeds, Cadamarteri joined Sheffield Wednesday as an eight year old, making his senior debut in the EFL Trophy against Leicester City’s under-21s in October 2022.

He did not then feature for the Owls’ first team again for over a year, largely due to surgery, handed his league debut by Röhl against Millwall in November 2023, before scoring his first senior goal during a 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers a few weeks later.

He then also netted against Norwich, QPR and Swansea, before spending last season on loan at Lincoln City, scoring eight times in 31 outings for the Imps, his campaign at Sincil Bank cut short by a groin injury suffered mid-way through the season.

Now back at Sheffield Wednesday, given that many of the Owls’ senior players departed during the summer due to financial turmoil, he has started nine of their 12 EFL Championship matches, with the table below documenting his importance to Henrik Pedersen’s side.

Stats vs FBref & SofaScore

As the table emphasises, Cadamarteri has been an integral figure for Wednesday this season, scoring during a 2-2 draw with Wrexham at the Racecourse in August.

He has though had the most shots of any Wednesday player, missing two Opta-defined big chances, while over 18% of his total touches have come in the opposition penalty area, showing that he offers an attacking presence.

Meantime, the 20-year-old has also made an interesting choice when it comes to international football.

After representing England at youth level, he switched his allegiance to Jamaica earlier this year, debuting for the Reggae Boyz in Bermuda in September, scoring against Trinidad & Tobago in Kingston a few days later.

Thus, if Steve McClaren’s team collect four points from their two qualifiers in November, again Trinidad & Tobago and then Curaçao, they’ll be heading for a first World Cup since France ’98, which could give Cadamarteri a platform to increase his exposure and market value, currently valued at around £1.1m by Football Transfers.

Ali Maxwell labels the young striker a “finisher” while Röhl, when the pair were still together in South Yorkshire, described him as “dangerous”.

A report by Total Football Analysis agrees, noting that he ‘consistently moves around to find pockets of space’, while praising his ability to ‘occupy spaces intelligently’ and excellent penalty box positioning.

Thus, it is clear that Cadamarteri is a talented young player, one who could well be available for a slashed price, while he may be eager to re-untie with Röhl north of the border.

Summer signing Chermiti has scored only once for Rangers to date, his first goal for anyone since May 2023, looking very unconvincing overall, while fellow centre-forwards Danilo and Bojan Miovski have only two goals to their name so far this season.

Given the dearth of quality in Rangers’ striker department, the young Jamaican international could come in and be first-choice from the word go, firing the Gers up the table.

Rohl could now turn "exciting" Rangers star into his own Shankland at Ibrox

Following Rangers’ 3-1 home win over Kilmarnock on Sunday, has Danny Röhl unearthed an “exciting” attacker who could be their own Lawrence Shankland?

No police clearance yet for Chinnaswamy to host Maharaja T20

KSCA is looking at alternative venues, including its own facility in Alur as well as the Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru

The Bengaluru police is yet to give clearance to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to host the Maharaja T20, the state’s franchise-based T20 competition, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The tournament is scheduled from August 11 to 27.The non-clearance by police is primarily due to the ongoing investigation into the June 4 stampede around the Chinnaswamy premises during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations. An independent state police crime branch investigation into the incident, which resulted in 11 deaths and over 50 injuries, is ongoing.Anticipating potential hurdles, the KSCA had announced on July 11 that the Maharaja T20 would be played behind closed doors. The association is now looking at alternative venues, including its own facility in Alur on the outskirts of Bengaluru, as well as the Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru. While Alur has excellent drainage and infrastructure, the absence of floodlights and spectator seating is an issue, especially for broadcasters and franchises.Related

As things stand, Alur is set to host the group matches of the six-day women’s competition – the Maharani T20 – from August 4. The KSCA was considering the idea of hosting the women’s final at the Chinnaswamy, but that seems unlikely with police approvals yet to come. While the KSCA grapples with the possibility of a late venue switch, the franchises have voiced frustration and concern about the financial losses they now face. They have already made hotel bookings for players and staff on the understanding that the entire tournament would be held in central Bengaluru (Chinnaswamy). The issue puts the KSCA in a tough spot. Bengaluru is also the venue for the opening game of the women’s ODI World Cup, as well as one semi-final and possibly the final. India play Sri Lanka in the tournament opener on September 30. The Chinnaswamy is also set to host two warm-up games ahead of the competition.Last week, a one-man committee appointed by the Karnataka government to investigate the stampede deemed the Chinnaswamy “unsafe” for large-scale events. The commission “strongly recommended” that large-scale events be relocated to venues that are “better suited” to handle significant crowds.India’s domestic season-opening Duleep Trophy will be played entirely at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The board had earlier considered hosting the final at the Chinnaswamy, but those plans were cancelled owing to preparations at the venue for the women’s World Cup.

Usman Shinwari retires from international cricket at just 31

Usman Shinwari, the left-arm quick, played just 34 times for Pakistan across formats between 2013 and 2019

Usman Shinwari, the 31-year-old left-arm fast bowler, has announced his retirement from international cricket after representing Pakistan in one Test, 17 ODIs and 16 T20Is from 2013 to 2019.Shinwari made his international debut in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Dubai in December 2013, conceding nine runs without picking up a wicket in his only over. He had played four T20Is before making his ODI debut, also against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, in October 2017. The only Test appearance came in December 2019, against Sri Lanka again, in Rawalpindi. That was the last time he played for Pakistan. His time in international cricket was hampered by a back injury, which flared up often. It was in ODIs that Shinwari was at his best, picking up two five-wicket hauls – including in his second appearance, against Sri Lanka in Sharjah in October 2017, when he returned 5 for 34. The five wickets came in the space of 21 balls. The other five-wicket haul came in his penultimate ODI, against Sri Lanka in Karachi in September 2019.Shinwari first caught the attention of the national selectors when he was 19, in 2013, when he crushed Misbah-ul-Haq’s Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in the departmental T20 Cup final. Seaming and swinging the ball, Shinwari returned 5 for 9 in 3.1 overs. That led to him being fast-tracked into the T20I side, but he failed to replicate his domestic form in international cricket. He was last in action in Pakistan’s National T20 Cup, where he turned out for Quetta Region, but failed to pick up a wicket in four games.

A Thiaw repeat: Newcastle keen on signing "one of the best RBs in Spain"

The Newcastle United starting lineup that takes to the field against Manchester City this coming Saturday in the Premier League will be an interesting one to predict.

Of course, Dan Burn will be unavailable owing to suspension, but another defensive alteration could see Nick Pope drop out of Eddie Howe’s plans for Aaron Ramsdale to start in between the sticks. After all, the ex-Burnley goalkeeper has shipped a leaky six goals across his last two league outings.

Moreover, Harvey Barnes might well feel he’s in line for a start, having scored Newcastle’s only goal last time out, as Brentford soured the mood even more on Tyneside when inflicting a 3-1 loss on the Magpies.

Moving into the near future, past Newcastle’s showdown with the Citizens, Howe also has the January transfer window hurtling into view now, if he wants to add more star quality to his ranks to try and fix their inconsistencies.

After Smit: Newcastle looking to bolster their defence in January

The PIF-backed Magpies could well splash the cash in January to try and jump up the table, away from their current lowly 14th position.

Indeed, rumours are already circulating that the Toon have AZ Alkmaar rising star Kees Smit on their potential shopping list, with GIVEMESPORT revealing that Howe and Co will need to fork out £22m to land the promising Dutch midfielder.

With two goals and four assists in all competitions this campaign, he could prove to be a worthwhile purchase, in giving the likes of Joelinton a run for his money centrally.

At the back, Newcastle are keen on landing a utility figure to boost their shaky defensive ranks in Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza.

Football Insider have speculated that his La Liga employers are now tempted to cash in on the 26-year-old when the window reopens, as his contract expires this coming summer.

Newcastle will believe they can pick up a similar Malick Thiaw-style steal by swooping for the four-time Spain international’s signature, as another defender who is untested in the Premier League prepares to take the English game by storm.

How Mingueza could be Newcastle's next Thiaw

Last season, on the way to the Toon clinching an impressive fifth spot in the final Premier League rankings, Howe often relied on the commanding duo of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn in the heart of defence.

This campaign, on the contrary, chinks have appeared in the Newcastle armour courtesy of their old guard, leading to the Tyneside giants starting with Thiaw over the likes of the Swiss international, who is proving to be an inspired pick-up from AC Milan for £30m.

The German has stood out as a determined battler, completely unfazed by the challenges of his new environment, winning 4.9 duels per game across his eight Premier League starts.

In stark contrast, the tried and tested Schar has won just four on average when sparingly used. Thiaw has been so impactful, in such a short space of time, that he has even been labelled as the “future of this club” at the back by Magpies’ captain Bruno Guimaraes.

History could repeat itself with the addition of Mingueza to the ranks in the coming months, with analysts Breaking the Lines boldly declaring that the 26-year-old is “one of the best right backs in Spain”, with Kieran Trippier perhaps feeling restless about his first-team minutes moving forward if the versatile defender is to leave Claudio Giráldez’s men behind, for a chance in England.

Before delving further into Mingueza’s strengths as a malleable presence, he would easily usurp Trippier in the right-back spot when comparing their 2025/26 numbers side-by-side.

The Celta number 3 has one goal and two assists to shout about from eight La Liga starts so far this season, when predominantly being used in the right-back position, with a strong four big chances also created. His ex-Atletico Madrid counterpart has no goals and assists; on the contrary, despite making one more Premier League appearance, with zero big chances also worryingly created.

Therefore, yet another usual mainstay under Howe could fall to the wayside with Mingueza’s arrival, much like Schar has to stomach, ever since the fresh blood of Thiaw arrived on the scene.

Capable of playing as a centre-back and as a midfielder, too, it really does feel like Mingueza swapping Spain for Tyneside could be a move that initially goes under the radar, that’s then viewed as a masterstroke, much like Thiaw leaving Italy behind for St James’ Park is already being viewed as.

Before Gomes: Edwards must sell Wolves star who's made them a "worse side"

Rob Edwards has the unenviable task of keeping Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League this season. It is fair to say he has his work cut out, with the Old Gold on just two points from the first 12 games.

His first game as manager of his former club didn’t go to plan, either. Edwards’ side were defeated 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace, to continue piling on the misery at Molineux.

Already nine points from safety, it seems a long way back for the Old Gold from this point, if they want to stay in the Premier League.

Things could get worse for the Old Gold soon, with one of their key players, Joao Gomes, linked with a move away as soon as January.

The latest on Joao Gomes' future at Wolves

It seems almost inevitable that Gomes will not be a Wolves player by the start of the 2026/27 season. Of course, if they are relegated, he will be snapped up, but a departure could happen as soon as the January transfer window.

Recent reports suggest that Manchester United are in advanced discussions to sign the 24-year-old this winter, as they look to strengthen in midfield. Indeed, the Old Gold could demand a fee of up to £44m if they are to sell their star midfielder this winter.

It would be a big loss, too. The 10-cap Brazil international has played in all 12 Premier League games this season. His ball-winning ability is imperative. Over the past year, he’s won an average of 2.15 tackles per game, placing him in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues.

Yet, there is a silver lining to a potential sale. Gomes would raise a significant amount of funds for the Old Gold to reinvest in the squad, and although they would have to replace him in midfield, they could look to strengthen the squad to help keep them up.

However Gomes’ situation ends up, there is a member of the Wolves squad who they could perhaps look at selling first.

Wolves' priority sale should not be Gomes

After losing Matheus Cunha, also to the Red Devils, and Rayan Ait-Nouri to their rivals Manchester City in the summer, this season was naturally going to be harder. Yet, it has not been a season where all of their best players have stepped up after those sales.

One of those players is Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Norwegian was one of the Old Gold’s best players in 2024/25, bagging 14 Premier League goals in 35 games during his debut campaign.

However, things haven’t been as smooth this season for their number nine. In ten Premier League games this term, he’s only bagged one goal, coming in a 3-2 defeat against Burnley. That strike was a penalty, leaving him without an open play goal.

There has been a scathing assessment of his performances this season, too. Former Premier League scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Strand Larsen, who earns £95k-per-week, has made Wolves a “worse side”” this term because of his lack of goals, which were so important in the previous campaign.

There is a huge decline in his underlying stats from last term, too. In 2024/25, the former Celta Vigo striker averaged 1.2 shots on target and a shot accuracy of 69.39%. Comparatively, he’s averaging 0.6 shots on target and 45.45% shot accuracy this season.

Newcastle United were said to be interested in signing Strand Larsen over the summer. A fee in the region of £65m was quoted, and whilst the move did not materialise, it might be a sale Wolves now look to get over the line, be it to the Magpies or another club.

Like with Gomes, that is something they can reinvest in January, as they look to build a squad capable of, somehow, keeping them in the top flight. With Gomes’ importance to Edwards’ side, and the fact that he is in good form, it might make sense to sell Strand Larsen first.

It would be a bold call, but he is not scoring, and with prior interest, that is money that could hugely benefit Wolves in the second half of the season.
