Burnley eyeing "brilliant" player for Kompany to boost survival chances

Things could finally be looking up for Burnley in their return to the Premier League under Vincent Kompany. The Clarets picked up just their second win of the campaign last time out against fellow newly-promoted side Sheffield United, smashing the blades 5-0 in stunning fashion. Now, Kompany and co will be looking up and hoping that this is the start of a resurgent run to get themselves out of relegation trouble. As things stand, they sit 19th and two points adrift of safety.

What could help their survival chances is the January transfer window. Reports suggest that those at Turf Moor are eyeing a move for one particular defensive reinforcement.

Burnley transfer news

Burnley opted for players with the potential to turn into important Premier League options rather than those with experience in England's top flight during the summer transfer window. Kompany welcomed the likes of James Trafford, Aston Villa's Aaron Ramsey, Zeki Amdouni and Michael Obafemi, who are all yet to really make a season-defining impact. With the January transfer window fast approaching, however, it looks as though Burnley are set to go again in search of key players. And that could lead them to one specific target.

According to TeamTalk, Burnley are eyeing a move to sign Sunderland right-back Trai Hume. The Black Cats may reportedly sell the right-back for profit, making way for Timothee Pembele to step into the role. If Burnley do want to secure the Northern Irishman's signature, they will reportedly have to fend off interest from Championship sides Leicester City and Leeds United in what could be a busy race come January.

Trai Hume

Burnley could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements and Hume ticks the box as a young right-back, who should only improve. When the winter window swings open, it will be interesting to see if the Clarets make their move.

"Brilliant" Hume could boost Burnley's survival chances

There's no doubt that Kompany's side need to improve defensively if they are to stay up. Burnley's defensive record is only better than Sheffield United's, who sit below them and bottom of the Premier League, having shipped five against the Clarets last time out. Hume can help solve some of Burnley's problems, however, if he arrives in January. Hume's stats prove he is more than ready to step up to England's top flight too.

It comes as no surprise when looking at the numbers that Hume has been at the centre of praise by those at Sunderland, including from teammate Daniel Ballard, who told Belfast Live:

“He’s been brilliant for us. He came from nowhere last season; he wasn’t playing too much, got his chance and he really took it. I’ve played next to him for a year-and-a-half now. He’s a fantastic player, a real technician, someone who Northern Ireland are really lucky to have. I think he has a wonderful future. We know each other very, very well.

“I know what he likes to do, he likes to move into midfield a lot. You can trust someone a lot more when you have built up that relationship, I feel comfortable and we’ve got a good chemistry. Trai is playing in the Championship, he loves a tackle and I think Northern Ireland will enjoy that as much as Sunderland fans do.”

Spurs tracking "physically imposing" defender who is highly rated by scouts

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to sign a new defender who is already in the Premier League, according to an update from a reliable journalist.

Spurs tracking Bournemouth's Zabarnyi

The Lilywhites have made a generally positive start to the new campaign having won nine, drawn three and lost four of their opening 16 games, meaning that they currently find themselves fifth in the table in the top-flight. However, Ange Postecoglou’s form has recently been hindered by injuries, and with Micky Van De Ven and Ashley Phillips both being out on the sidelines for the foreseeable, the manager needs to enter the market to find replacements to bolster his numbers at centre-back.

Tottenham make contact over move to sign £60m "tank" for Ange

Ange Postecoglou is not messing round with January around the corner…

By

Dec 10, 2023

Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi has been highlighted as a potential target, with the colossus having impressed during his 23 appearances in this division since putting pen to paper on the south coast from Dynamo Kyiv back in January (Transfermarkt – Zabarnyi statistics). The Ukraine international isn’t a new name to the hierarchy at Spurs, who saw a late bid rejected for him last summer.

Now, if the following update is to be believed, Daniel Levy is considering taking a second bite of the cherry to secure his 21-year-old long-term target. Taking to X, The Daily Mirror's Ryan Taylor revealed that Tottenham are still scouting Zabarnyi and are wowed by his high level of performance since the start of the season.

Fabio Paratici wanted to sign Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi from Dynamo Kyiv. Data analytics suggested he was a player of huge potential. Spurs rate him very highly & his Premier League numbers are now flagging up on several key defensive algorithms.”

Bournemouth defenderIllia Zabarnyi.

Zabarnyi is a "physically imposing" rising star

Standing at 6 foot 2, Zabarnyi provides a real presence at the heart of Bournemouth’s backline, which he’s proven so far this season where he’s averaging 3.8 clearances and 2.1 aerial wins per game in the Premier League (WhoScored – Zabaryni statistics).

The Kyiv native will also know what it takes to compete and be successful at a high level having secured three pieces of silverware since the start of his career, something that most of Ange's young squad in north London have not had lots of opportunities to experience yet.

Postecoglou’s target additionally only pockets £25k-per-week as it stands (Bournemouth salaries), so he would be a more than affordable option for the board to recruit because that would make him the joint fourth-lowest earner on the books (Tottenham salaries).

As described by GOAL, Zabarnyi is a “physically imposing” centre-back and there’s no doubt that he would strengthen the current defence should he put pen to paper, so this could be a situation to keep a very close eye on should any developments occur in the weeks ahead.

Leandro Trossard's first-half strike earned Arsenal their 27th Premier League win of the season – a new club record in a 38-game league campaign. That surpassed the wins the 2003/04 Invincibles achieved and the double winners of 2001/2; something Arteta was thrilled about.

  • WHAT MIKEL ARTETA SAID

After the match, he told reporters: “That’s 27 wins in the Premier League, it’s the most in the history of this football club in 130 years. That’s not progress, that’s history and that's very, very difficult to do, especially in the league that we are playing in now. So big compliment to all the players and the staff for what they've done."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite Arsenal returning to the Premier League's summit and beating their points total from last season, they may yet still be pipped to the title by Manchester City, who have a game in hand and are aiming for their fourth straight league triumph. If the Gunners do come out on top, it will mark their first Premier League title since 2004.

9/10 star has been better than Son in Spurs’ player ratings for 2023/24 so far

While early talk of a title charge has quickly been extinguished, positivity remains at Tottenham Hotspur following the fine start to life under Ange Postecoglou, with the Greek-Aussie having revived the club following the dour spell under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Although result haven't always gone their way in recent months, the Lilywhites continue to impress with their free-flowing and relentless style of play, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville branding the approach the best he has seen since retiring over a decade ago.

Such praise is just reward for the fine work that Postecoglou – who has already swept three Premier League Manager of the Month awards – has done to date, yet it is also a credit to his players, who have relished the opportunity to move away from Conte's pragmatic philosophy.

With a whole host of first-team assets having sparkled under the new regime, we at Football Fancast have deemed it wise to dish player ratings (out of 10) to the current Spurs crop – albeit including only those who have started at least three league games.

Goalkeeper

Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

8 – As Jamie Carragher said, the former Empoli man has been an undoubted "revelation" this season, having prevented 4.28 goals – the best record in the division. An unknown quantity when he arrived from his native Italy, fans and pundits alike are now certainly aware of Guglielmo Vicario.

Full-backs

Pedro Porro

8 – Despite possible fears that he would not suit playing in a back four, as opposed to lining up at wing-back, Pedro Porro has sparkled so far this season – registering six assists to date from his right-back berth.

Emerson Royal

6 – No longer the first-choice pick at right-back, Emerson has commendably stepped in at centre-back on occasion this season and coped admirably. A useful squad player for Postecoglou to call upon.

Destiny Udogie

Tottenham star Destiny Udogie.

9 – While others have sparkled, one of the most impressive, surprise packages of the season for Spurs has been Destiny Udogie, with the Italy international taking the league by storm since his belated arrival from Udinese. As footballJOE's Hunter Godson suggested, the 20-year-old "gets into nearly every team in the world already".

Centre-backs

Ben Davies

6 – It is a worrying state of affairs that Ben Davies is the only credible back-up option at centre-back and while the long-serving Welshman never disgraces himself, Postecoglou is aware that a new addition will be needed in January.

Cristian Romero

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

7 – Only recently dubbed the "best defender in the world" by Lionel Messi, the World Cup winner needs to cut the reckless side out of his game, having already spent time on the sidelines this season due to suspension.

Micky van de Ven

7 – Were it not for the injury he sustained back in early November, the summer signing would likely have had a far higher rating, having been dubbed the "real deal" by ex-Manchester United man, Rio Ferdinand following his fine start to life in north London.

Midfielders

Yves Bissouma

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma.

8 – While the former Brighton and Hove Albion man has also had issues with suspension of late, he has been a man reborn at the base of Postecoglou's midfield – with pundit Micah Richards dubbing him Tottenham's "most consistent player" earlier in the campaign.

Pape Matar Sarr

7 – Much like the man above, Pape Matar Sarr hardly got a look in under Conte after featuring just 17 times last term, yet is definitely making up for lost time now. The Senegalese star has largely been an everpresent since scoring against Man United back in August.

Giovani Lo Celso

6 – The jury is out on the Argentine's long-term future at N17, after spending the previous 18 months on loan at Villarreal, yet as his stunner against Aston Villa showcased, there is a quality player in there for Postecoglou to utilise.

James Maddison

serhou-guirassy-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

8 – While James Maddison has cruelly seen his impact curtailed due to injury, prior to that he had arguably been the "signing of the summer" – as per TNT Sports pundit Joe Cole – after registering eight goal involvements from just 11 league games.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

5 – While injuries and suspensions have allowed the Dane to earn a way back into the side in recent months, he looks set to be on his way sooner rather than later – amid talk of a January exit.

Forwards

Brennan Johnson

6 – An injury-hit beginning to life in N17 has hampered the Wales international's progress, yet Brennan Johnson is beginning to show signs of his exciting potential. Still a long way to go to warrant that rather hefty £47.5m transfer fee.

Dejan Kulusevski

8 – Now beginning to thrive in a number ten berth, Dejan Kulusevski – who podcaster Charlie Parrish described as an "absolute trojan" earlier this month – could well be starting to blossom into an £80m-£100m player. That's the verdict of Neville, at least.

Richarlison

6 – While still not prolific, Richarlison looks way beyond the player who scored just one league goal last season – notably netting a brace in the 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle United just over a week or so ago. The Brazilian needs to maintain that momentum, however, with Postecoglou reportedly having his eye on a new striker in January.

Heung-min Son

8 – Harry Kane who? With the Englishman out the door, his former partner-in-crime has stepped up superbly, leading the way as the club's top scorer this season. Now spearheading the frontline as an unorthodox number nine, it is hard to imagine where Spurs would be without him.

Manager

Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

8 – An early League Cup exit and a run of five league games without a win in late November/early December somewhat spoiled the party, but boy has there been a lot to like about Postecoglou's embryonic Spurs career. The football is beautiful and the man in charge seemingly wants to be there – how often have Spurs been able to say that in recent years?

This season, he has only managed to score three goals in 36 appearances across La Liga, the Spanish Cup, and the Europa League which has led Sociedad's manager, Imanol Alguacil, to favour other attacking options such as Portugal's Andre Silva and Sheraldo Becker over Sadiq.

But their interest in Sadiq show that they are already preparing for life without the English forward in their ranks.

Man Utd could sign a bigger talent than Mainoo in 2024

Manchester United head into the festive period full of little cheer or joy. The Red Devils now sit eighth in the league table after a hugely disappointing start to the campaign.

Erik ten Hag's side are no longer in Europe and have won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions.

If the Dutchman wasn't already feeling the pressure then he certainly will after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to West Ham.

Man Utd's replacement for Erik ten Hag could be "blindingly obvious"

This “blindingly obvious” replacement for Erik ten Hag could finally be the right man to take Manchester United forward.

By
Adam Scully

Nov 14, 2023

The clock is surely quickly ticking on his time at Old Trafford but fortunately, the January transfer window has arrived at just the right time. A productive month in the market could well save United's season and indeed his job.

Man United transfer news – A midfield hunt on the way

When it comes to improving the Man United squad in January, Ten Hag should be looking to reshape most areas of his team. However, he could certainly do with some more solidity in midfield.

A move for budding Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has been linked with the Red Devils aiming to add a bit more bite to the centre of the pitch alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Co. However, if they want to make a statement then acquiring one of the best young prospects in Europe would surely go down well.

Royal Antwerp midfielderArthur Vermeeren.

The latest on their pursuit of 18-year-old Arthur Vermeeren came a few weeks ago with reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, suggesting that Liverpool, Man United and Barcelona were battling to secure the teenager's signature from Royal Antwerp.

Any move could well be a bargain one with Vermeeren expected to earn his side around €25m (£22m) from his prospective sale in 2024.

How Arthur Vermeeren compares to Kobbie Mainoo

Ten Hag is already blessed with one of the finest young midfielders in the Premier League in Mainoo.

The teenager burst onto the scene at Goodison Park a few weeks ago as he earned his maiden Premier League start at Goodison Park. He "put on a masterclass" in the words of reporter Liam Canning, even outshining that memorable goal from Alejandro Garnacho.

However, in Vermeeren, United could arguably land a bigger and brighter talent than their current academy darling.

Why? Well, for starters, Vermeeren already has a full season of Belgium Pro League football under his belt. You may well argue that the standard isn't particularly high but let us remind you this is the league where the likes of Youri Tielemans, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne learnt their trades as young footballers.

A midfielder, the teen has been cooking up a storm in his homeland over the last 18 months, notably being described as "one of the most complete young midfielders in Europe" by scout Jacek Kulig. Fine praise indeed for a youngster who's also been noted as the 'next Andres Iniesta' in some quarters.

But how do Mainoo and Vermeeren compare? Well, they're both adept technically and possess a high amount of discipline and maturity in the centre of the park. That latter quality is hard to sum up using statistics but the rest of their respective games can be quantified nicely.

As you can see, while Mainoo is more proficient defensively, it's Vermeeren who's more likely to get on the ball and make things happen. He's truly exciting, making a remarkably high level of progressive passes per 90 minutes in comparison, supplying more balls into the final third and boasting a higher number of shot-creating actions – moments that directly lead to a shot on goal.

You may well argue that United need more high-quality experience in their team but as Mainoo has shown, if you're good enough, it doesn't matter how old you are. The thought of pairing these two players together is a mouthwatering one.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United's season has, somewhat, been saved by their FA Cup triumph – the second trophy of the Ten Hag era after last year's Carabao Cup success. However, they had their lowest-ever Premier League finish of eighth and suffered an ignominious Champions League group stage exit. The fact that they are still looking at alternatives to the former Ajax boss arguably shows how disappointed the club's board are with their 2023-24 campaign.

Ten Hag said he "didn't know" if he would be kept on at United but insisted if he does leave he will "go somewhere else to win trophies, because that is what I do". The Dutchman also repeatedly stressed that the club's injury situation this season is a huge reason why they have underwhelmed this term.

    WHAT NEXT?

Ten Hag, whose side finished third in the Premier League last season, reportedly headed off on his holidays on Sunday and now it is just a matter of time to see whether or not he keeps his job at Old Trafford.

Man Utd & Ten Hag offered Anthony Martial replacement this month – report

Manchester United's attacking ranks look like they're about to get a little lighter. Jadon Sancho, who hasn't played since August and has been training away from the first team since September after a falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag, is on the verge of sealing a return to Borussia Dortmund.

All that needs to be sorted out are a few "contractual and financial issues", but once those are dealt with, United will be able to move on from Sancho. It's hard to say the Red Devils will feel any immediate impact given the length of the Englishman's absence, but another forward could depart after significant involvement.

According to Football Insider, United are ready to offload Anthony Martial, who's played 19 games and 629 minutes so far this season, if they receive the right offer this month. He would need to be replaced, but United already have options.

United given Choupo-Moting opportunity

United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from Bayern Munich (Football Insider), and they appear to be interested in that possibility. Ten Hag's side have already held "preliminary talks" about a possible deal this month, though it's worth noting that nothing has reached an "advanced" stage yet.

The hope is that Sancho's exit will free up some otherwise unavailable funds for Ten Hag to add to his squad. Timo Werner is another who was offered to United, but Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg reported on Saturday morning that he's now expected to join league rivals Tottenham instead.

Choupo-Moting could invigorate United's press

United could be forgiven for an instinctively underwhelmed response to links with Choupo-Moting. In his previous stint in the Premier League with Stoke City, he only scored five goals in 30 top-flight matches, nor was he prolific at Paris Saint-Germain, netting just nine in 51 outings.

His strike rate at Bayern is better – 38 in 107. He's only hit the target twice in 19 games this term, but he enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 season with 17 in 30. Indeed, it's no coincidence that this was the first time he'd started more than eight Bundesliga games for the club (14 in this instance). When he was more involved, his output naturally increased.

Still, you could see why many would doubt his capacity to fix United's dire goalscoring issues. Ten Hag's men actually boast a respectable defensive record – they've conceded as many goals (27) as second-placed Aston Villa and fewer than Champions League-chasing Spurs (30) – but the reason they're languishing in mid-table is that they've scored just 22 times in their 20 matches. That's fewer than 18th-placed Luton, who still have a game in hand.

One thing that Choupo-Moting will definitely offer is an excellent work rate out of possession. He ranks in the 85th percentile or better, when compared to positional peers over the past year, for tackles (1.16), tackles won (0.78) and tackles in the middle third (0.54) per 90 minutes (FBref). This shows us that he's a committed and effective presser, which is the kind of player Ten Hag could use. United have been an average pressing team this season (as per The Analyst), ranking ninth for opposition passes per defensive action (12.3).

Whether United sign Choupo-Moting or someone else, there will still be an onus on other forwards to step up. Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford have only managed to bag nine goals between them, while Antony hasn't scored at all.
