Celtic: Kevin Campbell drops Odsonne Edouard verdict

Kevin Campbell has predicted that Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard will move away from Parkhead this summer despite a breakdown in talks with Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou 2021/22 rebuild begins in earnest

Expecting to considerably rejig his squad throughout the summer transfer window, Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou will be keen to formulate a side capable of challenging for the Premiership title this season.

High-profile outgoings are expected to be a key element of this regeneration. Kristoffer Ajer looks set to complete a £13.5m move to Brentford, whilst Ryan Christie has been linked with a move to Sampdoria in recent days.

Another man who has been linked with a Celtic Park exit is 23-year-old Edouard, who was in discussions with Leicester before stumbling blocks curtailed the switch [Foxes of Leicester].

Since then, the Hoops have completed the signing of forward Kyogo Furuhashi from J-League outfit Vissel Kobe [celticfc.com].

The Latest: Campbell believes Edouard exit ‘is going to happen’

In light of the Japan international’s arrival, Campbell believes that it is only a matter of time before Edouard leaves Celtic. The former Arsenal striker told Football Insider:

“I’ll be honest with you, it is going to happen.

“Edouard will want it to happen pretty quickly and I think the reason it has taken a little bit longer is because the move to Leicester fell through. I thought he was going to go and play under Brendan Rodgers again.

“He will be worried about getting injured in pre-season because if you’re injured you have to toe the line. But I think he will be alright, and I think he will get his move in the end.”

The Verdict: Edouard sale this summer makes sense for Celtic

Contractually, the 1.87m (6 foot 2) maestro is free to leave the Scottish giants for nothing at the end of May 2022. Inevitably, this dynamic probably means that the Bhoys will look to sell Edouard in order to recuperate a profit on the £9m they paid for him in 2018 [Sky Sports].

In 2020/21, he registered an impressive 28 goal contributions in 40 appearances, with 22 goals and six assists to his name [Transfermarkt]. His intent to regularly be involved in attack is admirable, averaging 3.5 shots per game in the Premiership across the campaign [WhoScored].

However, Celtic should look to sell the talented striker now in order to avoid losing him for free next summer, so Campbell’s premonition of a short wait for Edouard to get his move elsewhere could well come to pass.

LFC fans want Grujic offer to be accepted

A number of Liverpool supporters have been calling for the Reds to accept a rumoured £13million offer for midfielder Marko Grujic.

Jurgen Klopp has had an extremely strong choice of midfield options during his time at Anfield, with so many dependable figures to call upon.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum have been integral to Liverpool’s success, while the likes of James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones have all done their bits, too.

The Reds also now have Thiago to call upon, while Klopp may be eyeing up a summer addition, in order to make up for the loss of Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain.

One player who doesn’t appear to have a future at Liverpool is Grujic, with the Serb managing just 16 appearances, spending numerous spells out on loan.

According to A BOLA [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Hertha Berlin have submitted a €13million (£11.2m) bid for the 25-year-old, looking to sign him permanently.

Wolves: Who could Lage’s first signing be?

How Wolves go about welcoming new players to Molineux this summer will seemingly depend on who leaves the club.

Reports this week dictate that if the Old Gold want to spend big, they’ll have to sell some of their best players first.

Ruben Neves is one of the stars of this team and could be sold but there remain doubts over the future of Adama Traore too.

It’s a complex time for the Wolves board who lost Nuno Santo as a result of their proposed transfer plans this summer.

He was left unhappy with the lack of resources he was going to be given so, understandably, he took his leave.

One manager the club have been linked with is Bruno Lage. A deal has been moving forward in the last few days and it would appear that he is at the top of their shortlist.

He and his team were dubbed “spectacular” for the way they won the Portuguese top-flight with Benfica while Lage’s progressive style of management and the way he can take young players forward is admirable.

Lage could also be highly beneficial in landing one of Wolves’ long-standing targets; Carlos Vinicius.

The Benfica striker spent the campaign on loan at Tottenham where he played just nine times in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

Spurs had an option to buy the Brazilian this summer but it’s unlikely they’ll take up that opportunity.

Wolves are queuing up for his signature and could finally sign him this summer. They had a bid rejected last January and were knocked back again before he joined the Lilywhites.

It’s now thought he could cost the Midlands outfit around €25m to €30m (£21m-£26m).

If that goes through then he could form a simply magical partnership with Lage. The duo worked together at Benfica and it’s under the Portuguese manager that Vinicius thrived.

In 2019/20, the striker played 41 times with Lage at the helm, scoring 22 goals and providing a further 12 assists for his teammates.

It was a marvellous campaign for a player who seemed to love playing under the Wolves-linked head coach.

Thus, if the pair link up in the Midlands next season, they should hit the ground running. Vinicius knows how Lage works and the manager knows how to get the best from him.

With Willian Jose heading back to Real Sociedad, signing another forward certainly makes sense.

Speaking last year, Jose Gomes, his former manager at Rio Ave, said: “He’s a powerful player, and very intelligent. He is someone who always gets himself into goalscoring positions.”

That’s already an improvement on Jose who only scored one goal in the Midlands, very rarely getting himself into areas he could score from.

Vinicius and Lage is a mouth-watering combination for Jeff Shi to consider.

Tom Lees linked with Bristol City move

Outgoing Sheffield Wednesday star Tom Lees could join Bristol City this summer, as he moves on to the next chapter in his career.

The Lowdown: Lees moving on

The Owls suffered a heartbreaking 2020/21 season, with their relegation to League One confirmed on the final day, following a 3-3 draw away to Derby County.

Darren Moore now has the job of masterminding Wednesday’s return to the Championship, although he will have to do it without a host of established, soon to be out-of-contract players.

Lees is one of those after seeing out his current deal, so the centre-back is now on the lookout for a new club, having been described as ‘fantastic’ by former manager Garry Monk in the past.

The Latest: Bristol City keen on move

According to the Bristol Post, the 30-year-old is wanted by Bristol City, after they missed out on signing Hull City man Reece Burke.

Manager Nigel Pearson, formerly Wednesday captain, is keen on bolstering his centre-back options and considers Lees a potential acquisition.

The Verdict: Blow for Moore

In an ideal world, Lees would have extended his stay at Hillsborough, but the lure of playing Championship football has made that impossible.

At 30, the defender may not be at his absolute peak now, but he is still a hugely experienced player who could be a shrewd addition for a team of City’s ilk, and will no doubt be a big miss for the Owls.

He played 38 times in the league in 2020/21, leaving a big gap which Moore now needs to fill. Not only that, the experience of a man with seven years and nearly 300 appearances with the club could have been extremely useful in propelling the Owls back up at the first time of asking.

Rangers ace Morelos gets Colombia call

Many Rangers fans have been left to laud a piece of news involving Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombia international has been called up for his country in a 28-man squad for the Copa America, and the Gers sent their congratulations to him via a quoted tweet.

Morelos only has six senior international caps to his name, and this will be his first ever Copa America having not made the squad in 2019 (Transfermarkt), something that will feel extra special to him.

There is no doubt that the striker fully deserves it, coming off the back of a title-winning season in Glasgow, scoring no fewer than 17 goals and making a further 13 assists in 44 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Whelan can’t believe Aurier news at Spurs

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit and BBC regular Noel Whelan has been left stunned by a recent alleged development that Tottenham are very close to selling Serge Aurier to Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain.

The Lowdown: Aurier on verge of Spurs exit…

As explained by Football Insider, the Ivorian’s exit to PSG is apparently ‘all but done’, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side now closing in on the re-signing of Aurier, who left Paris for Spurs in 2017.

Indeed, it is reported that Tottenham have accepted a bid for the 28-year-old, who is close to sealing a move back to the French capital.

The Latest: Whelan can’t believe Aurier development

Baffled by the development, former Leeds striker Whelan believes that Aurier should be counting his lucky stars if PSG re-sign him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest/” title=”Tottenham latest…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“If Aurier gets the chance to go to PSG he’s the luckiest man in the world,” the pundit explained to Football Insider.

“He’s won the lottery. If he’s not good enough for Tottenham, I can’t see how he’s going to be good enough for PSG.

“It’s their money, they may have seen something they like. They must be seeing a different player.

“I think the two right-backs, that’s been a nightmare as well for Tottenham. There’s been a few signings that have not worked out.”

The Verdict: Right to be baffled?

Despite an imperious start to the season which earned praise from Alasdair Gold, Aurier has arguably dipped in form and it has resulted in him becoming one of the top candidates to be sold by Spurs this summer.

Reports have even suggested that he could be offloaded for as little as €12m (£10m), but this Football Insider claim doesn’t go into detail of the alleged bid accepted by Tottenham.

PSG’s interest and possible signing of Aurier this summer could be motived by finding a cheap defensive option to firm up Pochettino’s squad.

Even though Whelan is perhaps right to be baffled by this development, if the 28-year-old does complete a move back to France, we would advise him not to expect much game-time at the Parc des Princes.

Everton fans on Aarons transfer update

Many Everton fans have been flocking to an update from Alan Myers on Max Aarons.

As per a tweet from the sport news editor, Daniel Farke has denied that Norwich City are in advanced talks with the Goodison Park outfit over the potential sale of the right-back. This is despite Italian football journalist and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently claiming the opposite.

Nonetheless, what is for sure is that Aarons would be a welcome addition to the Merseyside club, given that Seamus Coleman is 32 years of age and Carlo Ancelotti’s team need to start thinking about buying a long-term successor for the Irishman.

Aarons would certainly fit the bill, and at just 21 years old, the England under-21 international has a lot of potential left to fulfil.

Pundit slams Barkley’s performances

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey has claimed that Ross Barkley goes missing far too often during games, which is what lets him down most.

Dean Smith has recently confirmed that Aston Villa currently have no plans to make the Chelsea loanee’s deal a permanent one this summer, with the England international starting his first league game since February in the 2-1 win against Everton at the weekend.

Barkley, who The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has labelled a “liability” in the 1874 podcast, via This Is Futbol, made a bright start to his time at Villa Park with two goals and one assist in his first five games, however, since his hamstring injury in October, he has only played 90 minutes in the league twice – including at Goodison Park.

Speaking on how he expects Barkley to impact games more like Grealish and how he tends to go missing during matches, Howey exclusively told FFC:

“When you’ve got a high-profile player like Barkley, you want him to be really effective during games, a bit like Jack Grealish who always tries to make things happen.

“I think the two of them worked well together but he sometimes goes missing, but there’s absolutely no doubt that he is a quality player.”

The £96,154 per week midfielder burst onto the scene at Everton, which earned him a move to Chelsea, but after just 86 appearances since 2018, his time could eventually be up at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, seems settled on his choice of midfielders in Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount, which leaves no guaranteed space for N’Golo Kante and, of course, Ross Barkley.

Newcastle chasing Terzic

Newcastle United are reportedly chasing Edin Terzic as a potential successor to Steve Bruce.

The Lowdown: Bruce future uncertain

A source from St. James’ Park has reportedly claimed that Bruce’s future in the North East would be uncertain if the proposed takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group were to go through.

The former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss does not have the best relationship with the fans anyway, having been recently booed by several members of the Toon Army despite their 1-0 home win over Sheffield United, which may force him out of the Tyneside club.

The Latest: Newcastle chase Terzic

As per Bild (via Sport Witness), the Magpies are chasing Terzic, who is currently the manager at Borussia Dortmund.

However, they would likely face competition from both Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace to bring him to NUFC.

Terzic has turned down the chance to manage Eintracht Frankfurt, and has been praised by the news outlet, as they have described him as an ‘eloquent’ man who ‘knows the Premier League’.

The Verdict: Newcastle should hire Terzic

Newcastle should seriously consider hiring Terzic to succeed Bruce, given the latter’s poor relationship with his own fanbase.

Terzic is a much younger manager than Bruce for a start, at just 38 years of age, and so has a lot of potential to grow into one of the world’s best coaches.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-3/” title=”Newcastle updates! (3)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

In his short spell at Dortmund, he has managed to get them from looking like a mile off qualifying for the UEFA Champions League to securing qualification with a game to spare (Bundesliga).

The German has also won silverware in the domestic cup, which should give the Magpies hope of ending their long trophy drought.

Nonetheless, Terzic is a fresh face with a lot of promise, and somebody that the Toon can quickly get behind.

Ex-Blades man makes big manager claim

Former Sheffield United star Keith Gillespie insists that the club need a British manager to replace Chris Wilder, in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

The former Blades boss left the club earlier this month, with relegation almost certain.

Sheffield United are currently rock-bottom of the league table, taking 14 points from 29 games.

They are 14 points off safety with nine games of the season remaining, and they have won just one of their last five games.

The club have yet to replace Wilder but Sky Sports News have revealed that former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is one of the club’s top choices to replace Wilder.

But Gillespie believes that a British manager should be the target for the club, as they look to appease the club’s supporters.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “When you have managers that do have experience, you’ve certainly got to sit up and take notice. I’m a believer that a British manager would probably be best in a club like that because they know the club.

“I might be completely wrong, I’d probably say that most Sheffield United fans would probably want a British manager to come in there.

“But if a name becomes available and it’s somebody the board think is viable and will hopefully make things work, then you have to look at it.”

Sheffield United have never had a foreign manager, with their last five bosses being English, with the club also having five Scottish managers, a Welshman, and a Northern Irishman since their founding.
