Klopp must unleash Henderson vs Southampton

With six goals scored and none conceded in their two previous games against Arsenal in the Premier League and FC Porto in the Champions League, Liverpool are in a good position to take on Southampton at Anfield in their next league match at the weekend.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Jurgen Klopp could select in his starting XI to take on the Saints, one player that should definitely be in the team on this occasion that didn’t start in midweek is Jordan Henderson.

Despite not starting the match against Porto on Wednesday night, Henderson still managed to impress in the 27 minutes of action he got in the second half after he replaced goalscorer Thiago Alcantara.

During his cameo, Henderson managed to highlight what a useful midfield option he is for the Reds in an attacking and defensive regard.

As well as providing the assist for Mohamed Salah’s goal, Henderson managed to complete 17 passes with one cross and long ball and even have one shot at goal.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Henderson also managed to help his side keep a clean sheet on the day by winning five of the six duels he was involved in and complete two tackles, ultimately earning himself an overall match rating of 7.3/10 from SofaScore, which is higher than the likes of Tyler Morton and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who started the match managed to get.

It’s been the same story for Henderson in the Premier League this season as well with an average of 1.4 key passes per game and 1.4 tackles per game under his belt.

With this in mind and the fact that he managed to have a rest by not playing the whole game, Henderson, who has been labelled an “athletic” player by former Reds captain Steven Gerrard, should definitely be in the starting XI to face Southampton, who he could absolutely terrify with his attacking prowess, defensive capabilities and ability to control the tempo of a game.

Looking beyond the Southampton clash, if Liverpool can keep the £18m-rated midfielder fit and playing regularly throughout the rest of the season, he will undoubtedly play a big part in their push for the Premier League title.

Tottenham make Nunez contact

According to 90min, amid all the noise surrounding pre-summer talks for Paulo Dybala, it appears Tottenham Hotspur have made contact to sign another superstar forward in Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Nunez in demand…

Touted by reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano as one of the ‘big name’ players who could be on the move this summer, Benfica’s star striker is apparently attracting interest from across Europe and the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As well as Spurs, north London rivals Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham are all harbouring an interest in Nunez, who could leave for £65 million this summer (90min).

This is significantly less than his release clause, which is estimated to be over £100m, and 90min believe that the Lilywhites are already making their first moves for the player before July 1.

The Latest: Spurs in contact…

While the links to Dybala are hotting up, according to 90min’s information, Tottenham are also in contact with Nunez’s representatives to find out what sort of agreement is possible to back manager Antonio Conte with the forward’s signing.

The report adds that Nunez himself is ‘ready to move’ this summer and a switch to England is very much ‘in his sights’.

The Verdict: Promising target…

While it will require a hefty investment on Tottenham’s part, the 22-year-old has been in scintillating form for Benfica this season, leaving little wonder why they are set to demand a hefty fee.

He’s racked up a quite incredible 20 goals in 22 league appearances over 2021/2022 with his young age and versatility across the forward line coming as yet more incentives for Spurs to attempt a move.

As Spurs officials allegedly make contact, this could be an indication that the club have real ambition to satisfy Conte.

RFC: Gers dealt blow in pursuit of Murphy

According to recent reports, Glasgow Rangers have been dealt a huge blow to hopes of bringing Jacob Murphy to Ibrox this summer, as sources revealed information concerning the winger’s contract.

The report by Football Insider claims that a Newcastle United source has revealed, contrary to reports his deal is expiring this summer, that Murphy will actually not be available to Rangers on a free transfer.

Indeed, the 26-year-old still has one year remaining on his deal at St. James’ Park.

This will come as a shock, as Steven Gerrard’s side would now have to agree a fee with Newcastle if they wish to land the £25,000-per-week forward this summer, potentially ruling the Ibrox club out of the race to land the former England U21 international on a permanent deal.

It goes without saying that a free transfer would have been far more attainable, so the surprise news that Murphy’s contract is actually 12 months longer than was previously known is certainly a blow.

Transfer Tavern Take

With Murphy currently being valued at £3.15 million by Transfermarkt, a deal for the winger may not be out of financial reach for Rangers, although, with it previously being reported that the 26-year-old would be available for free, the news is likely to come as a blow to Ross Wilson and co.

With Newcastle having paid £10.17 million for Murphy back in 2017, should the Magpies attempt to recoup anywhere near this amount of the winger this summer, it is not a difficult scenario to imagine Rangers turning their attention elsewhere in the transfer market.

Pundit makes key Mohamed Salah claim

Mohamed Salah wants more top players to join Liverpool in order to stay put at the club this summer, according to former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, after he heard a recent claim from the forward.

The Lowdown: Salah’s future still unknown

The 29-year-old’s future has been one of football’s biggest talking points recently, with the Reds superstar seemingly no closer to signing a new deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-29/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Salah has matured into arguably the world’s best player this season, tallying up a remarkable goal haul and getting into double-figures in terms of Premier League assists.

His current contract runs out at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, however, meaning there is a risk that they lose him for free next summer or he looks to leave before then.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts to Salah claim…

Speaking to Football Insider, reacting to the Egypt international’s recent message that it’s not all about the money when speaking on his contract, McAvennie claimed that Salah wants Liverpool to show ambition in the transfer market in order to stay:

“If it’s not money, then, my god, what is it? Maybe he wants a sign that more big signings are coming in to help Liverpool challenge.

“But they signed Diaz in January and by all accounts, he is brilliant, Jota too. Liverpool have one of the best squads in the world. The defence is ridiculous.

“Maybe Salah just wants to know they aren’t going to fall behind Man City and really, Liverpool should be making these signings anyway.

“Man City will spend and to keep up with them, Liverpool will have to spend. You just hope something can be agreed with Salah because he is unbelievable.”

The Verdict: A matter of time?

There is undoubted truth in McAvennie’s remarks – Salah is a born winner with high standards – but in fairness to Liverpool, they are already providing him with top-class teammates.

Luis Diaz’s arrival from Porto in January is proof of that and it seems highly likely that yet more renowned players will head to Anfield in the summer window.

We still feel as though Salah will end up signing a new contract but it would be handy if it could be sorted sooner rather than later, due to it acting as a distraction to Liverpool’s quadruple charge. The thought of him leaving is a grim one, considering the legendary Reds career he has forged.

THFC: Source reveals approach for Skipp

According to recent reports, Norwich City have made a new approach for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp.

The report by Football Insider claims that a source close to Tottenham has revealed that Championship table-toppers Norwich City, where Skipp is currently on loan, have enquired about the possibility of taking the £6.48m-rated 20-year-old on a temporary basis once again next season.

Football Insider reported that the England under-21 international is viewed as a key figure at Carrow Road, with Daniel Farke’s side keen to retain the services of the Spurs youngster for their likely Premier League campaign next term, should the Canaries go on to secure promotion from the second tier.

Transfer Tavern Take

Skipp has certainly impressed during his time spent in Norfolk so far, with the midfielder playing every minute of the Canaries’ 35 Championship fixtures. In that spell, the defensive midfielder has averaged two tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 0.5 blocks and 0.6 key passes per game, culminating in an average WhoScored match rating of 6.88 – ranking him as the club’s joint ninth-best player in the second tier.

However, with Jose Mourinho referring to Skipp’s displays at Norwich as “phenomenal” earlier this season, as well as suggesting he believes the 20-year-old could be the “future captain” of Spurs, it remains unclear as to whether the 58-year-old would be open to letting the midfielder leave north London once again next season, even on a temporary basis.

LFC fans want Grujic offer to be accepted

A number of Liverpool supporters have been calling for the Reds to accept a rumoured £13million offer for midfielder Marko Grujic.

Jurgen Klopp has had an extremely strong choice of midfield options during his time at Anfield, with so many dependable figures to call upon.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum have been integral to Liverpool’s success, while the likes of James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones have all done their bits, too.

The Reds also now have Thiago to call upon, while Klopp may be eyeing up a summer addition, in order to make up for the loss of Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain.

One player who doesn’t appear to have a future at Liverpool is Grujic, with the Serb managing just 16 appearances, spending numerous spells out on loan.

According to A BOLA [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Hertha Berlin have submitted a €13million (£11.2m) bid for the 25-year-old, looking to sign him permanently.

Rangers ace Morelos gets Colombia call

Many Rangers fans have been left to laud a piece of news involving Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombia international has been called up for his country in a 28-man squad for the Copa America, and the Gers sent their congratulations to him via a quoted tweet.

Morelos only has six senior international caps to his name, and this will be his first ever Copa America having not made the squad in 2019 (Transfermarkt), something that will feel extra special to him.

There is no doubt that the striker fully deserves it, coming off the back of a title-winning season in Glasgow, scoring no fewer than 17 goals and making a further 13 assists in 44 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Liverpool fans laud Van Dijk update

Many Liverpool fans have been left to laud an update on Virgil Van Dijk as Netherlands boss Frank de Boer commented on his latest injury status.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of his team’s opening 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier away at Turkey, in a match where they eventually lost 4-2, the Holland coach said when asked about the central defender:

“His recovery is going according to plan, he has 8 weeks left. He’ll be returning to training soon but there can be all kinds of setbacks. Anything he can contribute to Liverpool and to us would be a bonus but I’m not counting on it right now.”

The update has come as a much welcome relief to several members of the Anfield faithful, first of all to hear that he will be returning to training soon but also the fact that he only has eight weeks left of his recovery plan.

The UEFA Champions League final is set to be played on the 29th May, and should Jurgen Klopp’s men make it there again this year, Van Dijk could certainly return for it according to his schedule.

This is also the first time the supporters have heard a definitive timeline of exactly when to expect their star man back in action, so it’s fair to say they are excited.

LFC fans want Karius to replace Adrian

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Loris Karius to remain at Anfield this summer, replacing Adrian as Alisson’s deputy in goal.

Karius famously experienced a shocking night back in 2018 as the Reds lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. The German made two huge errors which ultimately proved fatal to his side’s chances of European glory and it was hard to see how he would come back from that nightmare.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

In truth, Karius hasn’t recovered, with the 27-year-old not making a single Liverpool first team appearance in the three years since, undergoing loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin.

With the 2020/21 campaign reaching its conclusion, however, Karius is expected to return to Merseyside for pre-season, at which point a decision will be made over his future.

While it appears unlikely that he will be retained by Jurgen Klopp, some supporters would like to see him stay instead of Adrian, who has also been unconvincing for the Reds on the domestic and European stage.

Liverpool fans delighted for Harvey Elliott

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted for Harvey Elliott after the Reds youngster received his first call-up to England’s Under-21 squad.

The 18-year-old has made a hugely impressive start to the season, having returned from his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Elliott produced an excellent performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at home to Burnley last Saturday, in what was his first Premier League start for the club, suggesting he could be a regular throughout the campaign.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The midfielder’s performances have been rewarded with a call-up for England’s Under-21s, receiving the honour for the first time in his career. Curtis Jones is also included in the squad.

It further suggests that Elliott has a massive future ahead of him, with a place in the senior side surely only a formality in the future, such is his talent.
