He’s outscoring Kuhn: Rodgers could land his next Dembele at Celtic

Scottish champions Celtic remain the team to catch in the Premiership, with the Old Firm giants still unbeaten after 11 games played thus far, having only dropped points at home to title rivals, Aberdeen.

Also into the League Cup final – and with seven points having been picked up from just four Champions League outings – things are certainly looking bright for the Hoops, with Brendan Rodgers having enjoyed a relatively smooth transition to life back at Parkhead over the last 18 months or so.

There is, however, always room for improvement, and with the January transfer window looming, it would be no surprise to see the Glasgow side dip back into the market to strengthen their hand.

One particular area of focus may be the centre-forward ranks, with there perhaps questions to be asked over whether Kyogo Furuhashi really is the perfect fit for the Northern Irishman. The Japanese goal machine scored 54 goals in just 83 games under Ange Postecoglou, yet has since bagged ‘just’ 25 goals in 66 games under the current boss.

The burden on the 29-year-old has undoubtedly been lessened by the capture of Adam Idah, although despite scoring nine times in 18 games at the back end of last season, the ex-Norwich City man has netted only five goals in 16 games in 2024/25 so far.

Perhaps it could be said that Rodgers – who previously suggested that having three strikers in the squad would be ideal – is still looking for that figure to hang his hat on through the middle, in the mould of a certain Moussa Dembele…

Moussa Dembele's record at Celtic

It says a lot that across his entire managerial career thus far, only three players have scored more goals under Rodgers than that man Dembele, with the Frenchman netting 51 goals in just 94 games during his time at Parkhead.

Signed for a measly fee of just £500k from Fulham back in the summer of 2016, the then-teenager was an instant hit in his new surroundings, ending that first season with 32 goals in 49 games in all competitions.

That return included that hat-trick against bitter rivals Rangers on what was just his fourth Premiership outing, having also notably bagged a brace in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Celtic Park.

A further 19 goals were to follow over the 2017/18 season and the start of the following campaign, before Dembele was plucked by Lyon for a handsome profit, joining the Ligue 1 side for a fee of around £19.7m.

A major success story in the Invincible campaign, in particular, Dembele – who now plies his trade in Saudi Arabia – is a shining example for any centre-forward to follow in Glasgow, with the Hoops seemingly looking to snap up another rising star in the near future.

Celtic's search for a striker

As reported earlier this week, Celtic are believed to still be keeping a close watch on Brondby marksman, Mathias Kvistgaarden, with the Premiership leaders said to have watched ‘several’ of the Dane’s recent matches.

This follows reports from the summer which indicated that the 22-year-old was a target for Rodgers and co, with an asking price of around £8.5m having been suggested.

Whether the club would fork out such a fee – having already spent £9.5m on Idah – remains to be seen, yet the youngster certainly warrants the attention, having been “absolutely sensational” so far this season, as per journalist Antonio Mango.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As Mango also noted, his “involvement in every game is phenomenal”, with the in-demand talent – who is also being courted by the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion – having scored 13 goals and provided five assists in just 20 games in 2024/25 so far.

That goal tally places him ahead of what even Celtic’s leading scorer, Nicolas Kuhn, has achieved this season, with the German wizard netting times from the right flank.

For Brondby in total, Kvistgaarden now boasts 37 goals and a further 17 assists in 108 appearances across all fronts, working out as a goal involvement once every two games.

That ability to both score himself and create chances for others also provides that similarity to Dembele, with the former France U21 international also registering 18 assists during his time with the Bhoys.

There may be concern over the Brondby star’s lack of experience and consistency – having netted just ten times in 2023/24 – although it’s worth remembering that Dembele had only scored 19 senior goals at Craven Cottage, prior to moving north of the border.

As such, bringing Kvistgaarden into the fold as competition or even a potential replacement for both Idah and Kyogo could represent a wise move, with there certainly no room for complacency with the Dons still breathing down their neck.

What Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal in talks over Raheem Sterling deal

A report has shared what Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal in talks over a permanent switch to the Emirates Stadium for loanee winger Raheem Sterling.

Sterling's mixed start after summer move to Arsenal

The former Man City star was sporting director Edu Gaspar’s biggest-name signing by some distance in the summer.

Sterling, who boasts over 80 caps for England at international level, was a serial trophy winner during his time at City as well – and his experience on the most noteworthy stages of high-level football was seen as a real plus-point of his addition on deadline day.

Arsenal were offered a late summer chance to sign Sterling on a temporary deal from Chelsea after head coach Enzo Maresca deemed him surplus to requirements and not part of his long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.

It was a chance they grabbed with both hands, as manager Mikel Arteta knows the player very well from their time together at Eastlands. Commenting on his decision to reunite with the £162,500-per-week winger, Arteta revealed that it took him “10 seconds” to green-light a deal for Sterling.

“The first call I had with him I knew in the first 10 seconds we have to bring him because he really wanted it,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s decision to sign Sterling.

“That was my only question mark: ‘What stage is he at in his career?’ After ten seconds I knew already before the next questions that we needed him here. What I see is hunger. He’s a player that wants to play every minute of every game. When that’s not the case, he’s not happy.

“He wants to play every single day and I see that. His commitment and the level of energy that he’s bringing to the team is a big boost.”

Fast-forwarding to now, Sterling has endured a slightly mixed start. He’s off the mark in terms of both goals and assists, but his only contributions in that regard came during a 5-1 win over Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

The former Liverpool forward is yet to bag a goal or assist in the league over his four appearances, having started just two top-flight matches with his other cameos coming off the bench.

What Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal in talks over Sterling deal

However, there is still plenty of time for Sterling to convince Arsenal chiefs to sign him permanently.

According to Football Transfers, Chelsea have already offered the north Londoners an opportunity to take him off their hands at the end of the season. As well as this, Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal a bargain price for Sterling.

It is believed the Blues are prepared to sell for around £25 million, which is far below Sterling’s estimated value of around £38 million. However, while this may seem generous, Edu is only willing to pay around £15 million as things stand – so this could lead to a stalemate in talks.

It is added that Arsenal are currently debating the possibility of striking a permanent move for Sterling internally, so there is still plenty of work to be done before he’s a Gunners player for years to come.

Speaking to reporters after the Angers clash, De Zerbi said: "If you don’t have the ambition to aim higher, it can be frustrating and even humiliating. Obviously, you may not achieve your goals, but that’s okay. If you want to be part of this club, you have to be ambitious, obsessed with looking ahead, with humility, but always with respect.

Asghar Afghan to retire from all formats after T20 World Cup game against Namibia

Asghar Afghan, the 33-year-old former Afghanistan captain who is a part of his country’s squad at the ongoing T20 World Cup, has announced his decision to retire from all formats of the game at the end of their fixture against Namibia on Sunday. The Afghanistan Cricket Board has accepted it, saying that it “welcomes and respects his decision” and “expresses gratitudes for his services to the country”.Asghar – earlier Asghar Stanikzai – didn’t get a chance to bat in Afghanistan’s 130-run win over Scotland in their first Super 12s match at the T20 World Cup and scored 10 in seven balls in the defeat against Pakistan. That was his 74th appearance in a T20I, in which he has scored 1351 runs at an average of 21.79 and strike rate of 110.37.Having started his international career in 2009 with an ODI against Scotland in Benoni in a World Cup qualifying game, Asghar scored 2424 runs in 114 ODIs at an average of 24.73 and a strike rate of 66.77.He was Afghanistan’s captain in their inaugural Test match, against India in Bengaluru in 2018 and played six Tests, scoring 440 runs at 44.00.

A part of the Afghanistan Under-17 back in 2004, he represented his country at the senior level later that year, in Asian Cricket Council tournaments, and then became a regular part of the national team, playing the World Cricket League lower divisions in 2008-09.Arguably a better captain than a batter, who led his team up the ICC ladder in tricky times, Asghar led Afghanistan in 59 of his 114 ODIs, and 52 of his 74 T20Is. In fact, he holds the record for the most wins as captain in T20Is: Afghanistan won 42 games in the format under him, with nine losses and one tie, while India won 41 under MS Dhoni, to go with 28 losses, one tie and two no-results.His role as a leader, however, has been a bit up and down of late. In May 2019, the Afghanistan board had taken the all-format captaincy away from Asghar and put in place a three-way captaincy formula, with Rahmat Shah (Tests), Gulbadin Naib (ODIs) and Rashid Khan (T20Is) taking charge. But three months later, after the 2019 ODI World Cup, Naib was sacked – as was Rahmat – and replaced by Rashid across formats. Just months later, in December, Asghar was brought back, again across all formats, for one more stint. That stint, though, lasted just 15 months, with the board again opting for a split-captaincy model.

West Ham are planning a move for Besiktas playmaker Ernest Muci among their targets, according to some media sources, while Milan forward Samuel Chukwueze is also on Steidten’s radar heading into 2025.

The Irons will see both Danny Ings and Michail Antonio leave when their contracts expire next year, so it would make perfect sense for West Ham to bring in a striker at the turn of the year – or fresh forward options at the very least.

Konstantinos Mavropanos and Michail Antonio

Lopetegui’s side have been sporadically linked with a move for Lyon star Rayan Cherki, with an update coming to light on the Frenchman and West Ham’s rumoured interest.

West Ham prepared to bid £25 million for Cherki

According to reports from Spain, West Ham are prepared to bid £25 million for Cherki, who is valued at around that amount by the Ligue 1 club. It is also believed that Lopetegui has personally been watching the player closely and views him as an ideal potential squad upgrade.

The 21-year-old made 33 French top-flight appearances last season, bagging six assists and a goal, with 10 goal contributions coming the season before that. Still very young, Cherki has plenty of room to develop, making him a pretty astute addition for his reported asking price.

Lyon star Rayan Cherki

“He’s really an attacking midfielder, although he can also play as a left-winger,” said Eurosport reporter Martin Mosnier last summer.

“Cherki is an exceptional dribbler, one of the first things one notices when watching him is that he appears to be ambipedal, as he can seemingly utilise both feet equally well.

“His strengths are as follows: key passes, dribbling and his ability to create something out of nothing. But, because there’s always a but, he’s not a great defensive contributor and he’s still very inconsistent – but he’s still only 19.”

New Zealand to celebrate WTC victory with week-long, nationwide tour

New Zealand’s World Test Championship-winning squad is set for a week-long, nationwide tour with the mace later this month. The tour will kick off in Whangarei on July 26 and will end in Invercargill (Stadium Southland) on August 1, with Auckland (Eden Park), Tauranga (Hamilton), New Plymouth/Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin (Forsyth Barr Stadium) being the other stops on the trip.Captain Kane Williamson, Kyle Jamieson, the Player of the Match in the historic WTC final, Devon Conway and Colin de Grandhomme, however, will not be part of the revelry at home, as they are all currently in the UK, playing county cricket or preparing for the Hundred. The rest of the players and the support staff will likely be part of the tour after spending time with their families following MIQ (Managed Isolation Quarantine) in Auckland.Spinners Will Somerville and Todd Astle, and opening batter Jeet Raval, will also take part in the tour. The trio was not part of the squad for the UK tour, with the WTC final thrown in, but will be recognised for their roles in helping New Zealand qualify for the final.”It’s quickly become apparent that Kiwis want an opportunity to be part of, and to share in this historic achievement,” NZC chief executive David White said in a statement. “We’ve been inundated with requests to do something so that New Zealanders can join in with the team and share the moment.”At first, we thought the time-out in managed isolation and the length of time since the win would dampen enthusiasm for a public celebration, but we have been persuaded to think again.”NZC/BlackCaps

Senior seamer Tim Southee has been lined up to launch the tour in his hometown of Whangarei. He was particularly excited about sharing New Zealand’s WTC success with the public.”I guess it’s a great way to give back to the fans that’ve supported us – not only the last couple of years through the Test Championship but for a long time,” Southee said. “For some of these smaller places that don’t get a lot of international cricket or see a lot of cricketers, it’s a great chance to go back to those smaller towns… I know growing up in a small town, anytime there’s something special like that, it’s always a great occasion. Hopefully, we can give back and hopefully give kids a bit of future hope of future cricketers.”Southee was also looking forward to celebrating the occasion with Somerville, Astle and Raval who were among 22 players that represented New Zealand in the inaugural World Championship cycle.”With the Test Championship spanning over a two-year period, we used a number of players. I think 20-odd players in total and although there was [only] 15 in the final, it was nice for those guys that contributed,” Southee said. “I look back to the likes of Somers that played a massive role in the series in Sri Lanka that got us underway in the Test Championship, so it’s great to have those guys that contributed along the way in a two-year cycle to get us through to the final. So, it’s nice for them to be able to bask in the rewards as well.”‘Huge of sense of pride among the whole community here’ – Somerville
As for Somerville, he will be part of the Auckland leg of the mace tour. The offspinner had played his part in New Zealand’s overseas Test victories in Abu Dhabi and Colombo.”It was just a huge sense of pride, having been involved in a small way,” Somerville said. “[I] suppose I played three of the games before the final. Huge sense of pride amongst the whole community here – walking up to school and dropping the kids off. Everyone was very excited, talking about it, and there was a lot of buzz around, going into day six and yeah there was not a lot of sleep had by the dads the next day and it was very exciting. It was a nice result to have after a few years of really good cricket by the Black Caps.William Somerville played a key role for New Zealand in their overseas victory at the P Sara Oval•Getty Images

“It [the mace] looks like quite a big thing to hold. But it’d be fun waving it like a wand I suppose and get some photos with it…To have won the first World Test Championship final is something that everyone in New Zealand is going to remember forever. To be part of that history is pretty wonderful really.”The 36-year old has not played for New Zealand since the Sydney Test last year, but could come back into the selection frame as the side prepares for two Tests in India later this year, which will be part of the second WTC cycle.”I’ve always felt a part of this squad and the wider squad, in contact with Steady [coach Gary Stead] and Gav [selector Gavin Larsen] about where I sit,” Somerville said. “Unfortunately last year we were supposed to go to Bangladesh in August, but by the time June came out, we sort of knew that wasn’t going to happen. That was a two-Test series that I’d have liked to be a part of; it hasn’ t happened.”Moving forward, there’s a tour of India in November – whether that’s in India or not who knows at this point? I’m sure they’ll be keen for it to be there based on the wickets that we present for them. So, hopefully they will want to get us back with some spin-friendly wickets and it’ll be nice if we can meet that challenge head-on. If that occurs, I’d love to be a part of that. Certainly have my eyes set on the Indian tour and hoping that I can have that opportunity into the year.”

Dyche must drop 5/10 Everton star who had fewer touches than Pickford

Everton looked like they were closing in on their first Premier League win of the season, going two goals up against Aston Villa. We’ve been here before though, haven’t we?

It was yet another case of déjà vu as the Midlands side stormed back to score three goals and take the three points, leaving Sean Dyche and his team shellshocked.

Despite several players impressing against Villa, such as goalscorers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dwight McNeil, there were a few who failed to really demonstrate their true talents during the 3-2 defeat.

One name that stands out is Jack Harrison, who didn’t offer much going forward into the final third.

Jack Harrison’s game in numbers vs Aston Villa

The loanee was expected to stretch the Villa defence during the game, providing chances for Calvert-Lewin, yet this plan didn’t quite work out.

Indeed, during his 64 minutes on the pitch, Harrison completed just nine passes, which was 13 fewer than Jordan Pickford, while he only managed 24 touches, again fewer than his goalkeeper (42), suggesting he didn’t get involved as much as Dyche would have wanted.

Defensively, the winger lost possession six times, was dribbled past once and made an error which led to Unai Emery’s side scoring, underlining how poor he was on the right flank.

Subsequently handed a 5/10 match rating by the Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley, he stated that the forward had ‘more perspiration than inspiration from him.’ Not ideal, is it?

There is no respite for the Toffees, as they face Southampton in the League Cup this evening. Might Dyche make a few changes to his starting XI for the clash against the Saints?

The players who could replace Jack Harrison

In truth, Harrison is the only senior right-winger in the current Everton first team, but could the manager make some tactical tweaks or shift certain players into different positions against Southampton?

McNeil, who scored against Villa, has operated on the right flank in the past, providing Dyche with an option. The former Burnley manager worked with the 24-year-old at his old club, knowing exactly how to bring the best out of the player.

Furthermore, new signing Jesper Lindstrom may also be a candidate to come in for Harrison out wide. The former Eintracht Frankfurt gem usually plays as an attacking midfielder, scoring 34 goals and registering 26 assists while playing in this position during his senior career.

The Dane has some experience out wide, however, making 34 appearances combined on both the left and right flanks, scoring twice and grabbing three assists in the process.

During the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign, Lindstrom ranked in the top 4% for both shot-creating and goal-creating actions per 90, while also ranking in the top 4% for carries into the opposition penalty area per 90.

These attacking traits could see him thrive out wide for Dyche, especially against a side who have leaked 11 goals in five matches so far this term.

There aren’t many options at his disposal, which means the manager may have to improvise slightly, especially if he aims to get the best out of his squad this evening.

Sunderland hit gold on "outstanding" star who is worth more than Bellingham

Sunderland supporters will be entering September over the moon with their side's top start to the Championship season, with the Black Cats still boasting a 100% record in the second tier after four games.

Only one goal has been shipped across this unbeaten patch so far, whilst ten strikes have also been scored by Regis Le Bris' men to keep them at the very top of the second-tier summit.

Whilst the likes of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham have been thrust into the limelight off the back of this excellent start, reliable number-one goalkeeper Anthony Patterson also continues to prove his immense worth to the early Championship pace-setters.

Patterson's season so far

Much like Rigg, Patterson has been in the Sunderland first-team ranks for what feels like an eternity, despite the shot-stopper still only 24 years of age.

The homegrown Black Cats product has shone this season to date, as he has done over a number of campaigns in the senior mix now, with three clean sheets collected from those four clashes.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

He was particularly impressive versus Cardiff City on the opening day to ensure Le Bris got off to a winning start in the challenging Sunderland dug-out, making four saves in the Welsh capital to constantly deny the Bluebirds and to help hand his side a 2-0 victory.

Wanted by a whole host of Premier League suitors this off-season, with Gary O'Neil's Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly interested at one point, Patterson will just aim to continue performing for his boyhood club – away from any admirers watching from afar – to try and put the Wearside outfit firmly back on the footballing map by winning promotion up to the top-flight.

Noted as having "outstanding" reactions in the past when in-between the sticks by football journalist Josh Bunting, Patterson is very firmly the main starting 'keeper week in week out for Le Bris' men.

He's even worth more than Bellingham, according to Football Transfers, which further reinforces his pivotal nature in the Sunderland first-team ranks, as the 18-year-old aims to soar to new heights across this season to come.

Patterson's transfer value in 2024

Not even Bellingham's bright start to the new Championship season – which saw the former Birmingham City prodigy assist Jack Clarke's final ever Sunderland goal away at Cardiff – has impacted Patterson's transfer value rising above the Black Cats number seven's, with Patterson worth £11.2m currently, as per Football Transfers.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Bellingham is worth a little less at £10m, but will no doubt generate Sunderland more money than that if he is sold on down the line, much like Clarke gifting the second-tier promotion hopefuls up to £20m after leaving for Ipswich Town.

He could go for a fee around this region too, with a mightily impressive seven goals and one assist managed during his debut season whilst he was still finding his way in his new surroundings.

1. Anthony Patterson

£11.2m

2. Jobe Bellingham

£10m

3. Trai Hume

£8m

4. Dan Neil

£7m

5. Daniel Ballard

£6m

Glancing at the table above, both Patterson and Bellingham take the top two spots when it comes to the high-valued assets at the Stadium of Light in the here and now, with the likes of Trai Hume and Dan Neil also seeing their values shoot up somewhat.

Hume was only worth a meagre £168k when first making the switch from his native Northern Ireland, before becoming a settled first-team face on Wearside.

Patterson didn't cost a penny, rising up the youth ranks to become the trusty number-one shot-stopper.

Now up to 40 clean sheets in the Sunderland first-team to date, after his recent three had been added to the back catalogue, Patterson will aim to keep these excellent displays coming as another set of whirlwind Championship fixtures await the confident Wearside outfit after the international break is up.

The next Rigg: Sunderland could replace Jack Clarke with "exciting" teen

Injured Georgia Plimmer ruled out of cricket for remainder of the year

New Zealand opener Georgia Plimmer has been ruled out of cricket for remainder of the year after sustaining a bone stress reaction in her groin. The injury means she will be unavailable for the home ODI series against Australia in December.A New Zealand Cricket release said Plimmer experienced pain in her left hip joint during the recent ODI series in India last month. A subsequent MRI and assessment by a specialist upon return to New Zealand confirmed the injury. She is expected to require six weeks of rest and rehabilitation, with a progressive return to high-speed running in January.Along with the Australia ODIs, Plimmer is also set to miss the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the Super Smash domestic competitions.”We’re really gutted for this to happen to Georgia when she’s at the top of her game,” Ben Sawyer, New Zealand women’s head coach, said.”She’s certainly a loss for us heading into an important series against Australia. After her recent success at the World Cup and in India it’s disappointing she won’t be able to continue that form for the Wellington Blaze and against Australia next month. Georgia’s determined to rehab well and get back as soon as she can and we’re wishing her a smooth recovery.”Plimmer was New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer during their successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, making 150 runs in six innings. She also made scores of 25, 41 and 39 in the ODI series against India that followed, which New Zealand lost 2-1.
