Sophie Ecclestone seals nail-biting Thunder win with all-round show

Left-arm spinner holds nerve in final over after smashing 60 not out

ECB Reporters Network29-Aug-2020England spinner Sophie Ecclestone offered a glimpse of her ability with the bat as Thunder launched their Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy campaign with a four-run win over Lightning in a rain-affected match at Trent Bridge, smashing an unbeaten 60 off 61 balls. The 21-year-old, who tops the women’s T20I rankings as a bowler but rarely bats above nine in international cricket, hit six fours and two sixes, plundering 21 runs in the last over of the Thunder innings as they racked up a challenging 206 for 9 from their 50 overs.Lightning’s hopes of overhauling that total were dealt a major blow when their England opener Tammy Beaumont perished for just two. Scotland’s Sarah Bryce hit nine fours in her 52 but once she had succumbed to Ecclestone’s bowling the home side’s chances always looked slim. After 14 overs were lost to rain, a revised target of 151 left Lightning needing 32 off five overs once play resumed, but the combined experience of Ecclestone, England team-mate Kate Cross and World Cup winner Alex Hartley enabled Thunder to prevail in a tight finish.Teenager Sophie Munro – who turns 19 on Monday – was the pick of the Lightning bowlers, the right-arm seamer taking 3 for 32, including two wickets in her opening three overs with the new ball. However, a stand of 82 for the fourth wicket between wicketkeeper Ellie Threlkeld and allrounder Nat Brown rescued Thunder after a wobbly start and Ecclestone’s big hitting ensured that their hard work was made to count – although some spirited hitting by Abbey Freeborn and Lucy Higham set up a close finish after the rain.Lightning made good early inroads after Thunder had chosen to bat first on a bright morning, Munro striking with her third delivery for the Loughborough-based home side as Laura Marshall’s miscued pull went straight to Beaumont at mid-wicket.The right-arm seamer, who took 20 wickets for Nottinghamshire in county cricket last summer, was added to the England women’s training squad during the winter. She picked up a second scalp in her third over, dismissing Emma Lamb in a similar fashion as Beaumont pouched another straightforward catch.Thunder were 30 for two after 10 overs and immediately suffered another setback when Georgie Boyce was run out by Sophie Harman’s fine throw from deep cover.Sophie Ecclestone tucks one off the pads•Getty ImagesHowever, Threlkeld and Brown patiently brought Thunder back into contention, Threlkeld punishing England spinner Kirstie Gordon with a series of boundaries before Brown was run out for 38 by Abbey Freeborn’s throw from point.Munro claimed her third success when Threlkeld, having completed a 76-ball fifty, gave Beaumont her third catch with another mishit pull, but though Gordon and fellow spinner Lucy Higham were able to get among the wickets as Thunder chased runs, crucially neither was able to dislodge Ecclestone, who finished with a flourish by striking Higham’s offbreaks for six, four, four and six in the final over of the innings.Sarah Bryce looked fluent from the outset as Lightning began their reply, striking Brown’s medium pace for three consecutive boundaries, but Beaumont had managed only two singles when, squared up by Brown, she squirted an easy catch to Olivia Thomas at short extra cover.Joined by older sister Kathryn, the Lightning captain, Sarah led the way in a stand of 52 for the second wicket to keep their side close to the required rate but Kathryn was run out for 17 when Sarah declined her call for a single. Soon afterwards, after completing her own half-century, the younger Bryce was bowled by Ecclestone off a bottom edge.Beth Ellis having been leg before to Hannah Jones, Lightning were still 88 short of their target with 19 overs left when rain took the players off for almost an hour, after which the DLS calculation revised the requirement to 32 off 30 balls. It gave Lightning a glimmer of a chance but Higham’s leg-before dismissal to Hartley sparked the loss of four wickets in seven balls and though Nancy Harman picked up a couple of boundaries, Ecclestone had the last word by bowling her off the penultimate ball.”It was just so nice to get out there and play some competitive cricket and I think it would have been a good game to watch if there were any spectators in the ground,” Ecclestone said. “For me, it was great to be able to bat at No. 6 when it is normally No. 9 or No. 10 for England; great to have the opportunity to get some runs.”We’re seen a bit as the underdogs in this competition but we have some good young players and it is a chance to show what they are made of.”

Ange benches Richarlison in predicted Spurs lineup vs Liverpool

After two disappointing defeats in a row, Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to bounce back with a win against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered back-to-back defeats against London rivals, losing 3-2 against Arsenal in the North London Derby last Sunday, before suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Thursday evening.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

Their tough run continues this weekend at Anfield, as they try to put the final nail in the coffin of Liverpool’s failed title challenge. Indeed, the Reds have been in patchy form too, having picked up just four points from their last four Premier League games.

Spurs are currently hunting down Aston Villa who occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualification place. They are currently seven points behind Unai Emery’s side, although they have a game in hand.

It could well be the case that Postecoglou decides to rotate the Spurs side ahead of the trip to Liverpool this Sunday. There are three potential changes the Lilywhites manager could make ahead of the crunch clash…

1 GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

There are fair arguments to say that the signing of Guglielmo Vicario has been the best piece of transfer business Spurs conducted last summer. They signed him from Empoli for an initial fee of £17.2m, and he is so far proving his worth.

The 27-year-old has made some fantastic saves and has kept six clean sheets in the Premier League so far this season, as well as one in the FA Cup.

2 RB – Pedro Porro

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro

Since joining Spurs last January on a loan-to-buy deal from Sporting, Pedro Porro has impressed, but under Postecoglou, he has taken his game to a whole new level.

The Spaniard has one goal and seven assists this season for Spurs, which, as per SofaScore, is the second-most assists for Spurs this season, bettered only by captain Son Heung-min, who has nine. He has also created the third-most big chances, with only Son with 17 and Dejan Kulusevski with 13 having more than Porro’s 12.

3 CB – Cristian Romero

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Postecoglou showed great faith in Romero at the start of the season by making him one of the two Spurs vice-captains. He has played a big role this season, featuring 29 times and scoring an impressive five goals.

The Argentine is a tough defender and is very dominant in duels. According to SofaScore, he wins an average of 2.9 ground duels and 2.7 aerial duels per 90 minutes this season.

4 CB – Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin in action for Tottenham

The first of the three Spurs changes could see January signing Radu Dragusin get the nod at centre-back. The Lilywhites paid Genoa £26.7m to acquire his services five months ago, although his opportunities have been few and far between.

The Romanian has made just six appearances in a Spurs shirt so far, making two starts, in back-to-back games against Fulham and Luton. He could be in line to start this week due to a tactical tweak from Postecoglou.

5 LB – Mickey van de Ven

Micky van de Ven celebrates for Tottenham

The reason Dragusin could start is because Mickey van de Ven could fill in at left-back. Since Destiny Udogie’s injury, Spurs have played both Ben Davies and Emerson in his place, but both have struggled. Thus, Postecoglou might well turn to Van de Ven.

Indeed, Van de Ven has played at left-back 15 times in his career, although never for Spurs. His pace and excellent ability on the ball will stand him in good stead for that role.

6 CM – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Pierre Hojbjerg.

The second change Postecoglou could make is to start Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the centre of midfield, ahead of Yves Bissouma.

The Dane, who has played 33 times in the Premier League this season for Spurs, will bring lots of experience to their midfield. As per SofaScore, he averages 3.5 ball recoveries and wins an average of 1.7 ground duels per 90 minutes this season.

7 CM – Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr celebrating a goal.

Likely keeping his place in midfield from the defeat against Chelsea is Pape Matar Sarr. The young midfielder has left a great impression in his first full season of Premier League football.

Sarr has contributed to six goals this season, scoring three and registering three assists. Off the ball, he works very hard, winning an average of 4.4 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, according to SofaScore. He will no doubt continue to be a key player under Postecoglou.

8 AM – James Maddison

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

Since returning from injury, James Maddison’s early season form has taken a bit of a nosedive, leading to Postecoglou dropping him against Chelsea last season. However, against Liverpool, he could well come back into the side instead of Richarlison – who had just 19 touches before being booked on the hour mark during the midweek defeat.

With that being said, Maddison’s quality is obvious, and he was described as a “magician” by pundit Jamie O’Hara. This season, he has four goals and seven assists, which is still the fourth-most combined goal involvements for Spurs this season.

9 RW – Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski celebrates

Swedish international Dejan Kulusevski played as a number 10 against Chelsea, in behind his captain Son. However, he could well shift back out to the right wing against Liverpool, to accommodate Maddison.

The 24-year-old is a silky dribbler, who averages a competition of 1.6 dribbles per game as per SofaScore. Not only that, the 13 big chances he has created for Spurs this season are bettered only by Son.

10 LW – Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

It has been a successful first season for Brennan Johnson in a Spurs shirt, following his £47.5m move from Nottingham Forest on deadline day last summer.

The Welsh international has 12 combined goal involvements in the Premier League, which is more than any other player side from Son with 25 and Richarlison with 13. This is already Johnson’s best return in the Premier League, beating his tally from the 2022/23 season.

Contact made: Leeds eye £150,000-a-week international in huge £30m move

Leeds United could pull off a huge signing this summer if they are promoted from the Championship.

Farke's side flying but could still fall short

Currently third in the table, Daniel Farke's Leeds side sit just a point outside the automatic promotion places heading into the final games of the season.

A 2-1 loss to Coventry City dented their hopes of automatic promotion after a fantastic unbeaten run stretching back to the New Year, and they now know that they need to rely on Leicester City and Ipswich Town both dropping points in the final games of the season to be guaranteed a spot in the Premier League in September.

£45,000-a-week Leeds player says he'd happily quit for "amazing" club

Leeds and Daniel Farke could be needing to cash in on him this summer.

Apr 8, 2024

Should they fail to do so, Leeds will have a second shot through the play-offs, and a move into the top flight could allow them to flex their financial muscles once more.

Leeds eyeing big reunion

Now, reports have claimed that Leeds and Farke are eyeing up a shock swoop to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Elland Road. The English midfielder left for Manchester City in a £45m deal in 2022, but only managed six starts across 18 months at the Eithad Stadium and was often a late substitute.

He left Manchester in January after losing his spot in the England squad, and joined West Ham United on loan in order to rack up game time ahead of Gareth Southgate's squad for EURO 2024.

However, he has done his chances of featuring more harm than good in his short stint at the London Stadium. Phillips has racked up just seven Premier League appearances since arriving in east London, during which time he has been sent off, conceded a penalty and been criticised for his ineffectiveness on and off the ball by fans, which led to him swearing at some supporters after a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

He still has the faith of David Moyes, with the West Ham boss explaining that "Kalvin's a really good player, an international player, an excellent footballer and I do believe we can still make something out of the time we've got with him here".

But it has already been reported that the Hammers will likely not be making his deal permanent this summer, while Manchester City are also keen to offload him, setting a £30m price tag on his head.

Enter, Leeds United. Phillips' former club have reportedly contacted Phillips' representatives over a potential move for the midfielder, and have set aside £30m to make the deal happen, though they may require some flexibility on Phillips' £150,000 per week wages.

However, it will only go ahead on the condition that Leeds find themselves in the Premier League next season, while it is added that 'two other unidentified English teams' are keeping tabs on his situation ahead of a pivotal summer for the 28-year-old.

A return to Elland Road and the love of the home crowd could be just what he needs to rekindle his stuttering career.

Pochettino must ditch Chelsea dud who lost the ball 21x v Sheff Utd

Chelsea were unable to make it three Premier League wins in a row after a late Oli McBurnie goal saw the Blues settle for a 2-2 draw despite leading the encounter for a large period.

Goals from Noni Madueke and Thiago Silva saw Mauricio Pochettino's side lead 2-1 until the 93rd minute when the Blades' striker popped up to secure a huge point for Chris Wilder's men.

The win would have seen Chelsea move to within a point of Newcastle United with a game in hand, but the club currently sit ninth in the Premier League, three points off Eddie Howe's side and with a considerably worse goal difference.

The performance at Bramall Lane was yet another disappointing one, with boss Pochettino needing to drop one player after his display against the strugglers.

Nicolas Jackson's stats against Sheffield United

In what was an all-round disappointing performance from Pochettino's side, striker Nicolas Jackson had one of his worst games in recent weeks, with the Senegalese forward losing eight duels during the draw – the most of any player on the pitch.

The Chelsea frontman also lost possession 21 times during his 89 minutes for the Blues, with Jackson losing the ball more than any other of his teammates.

The 22-year-old was dribbled past three times by the Blades' defenders, with the attacker unable to stop the likes of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson from driving the ball out from the back.

Jackson has now gone three Premier League games without a goal, after a run of two goals in as many matches, with his form taking a nose dive in recent outings.

His display in Yorkshire yesterday won't have done the youngster any favours, with Pochettino needing to drop the striker ahead of the club's next game against Everton a week today.

The man to replace Jackson in the final third

As demonstrated by how many times he lost possession against the Blades, Jackson isn't a hold-up striker, with the Senegal international liking to run the channels and get in behind.

However, the Blues may need to slightly alter their playstyle to allow another player to flourish at the top end of the pitch if the 22-year-old were to be dropped in the upcoming fixtures.

Pochettino could potentially turn to starman Cole Palmer, with the attacker demonstrating his finishing abilities with his 16 goals in 27 Premier League games this season.

As shown in his stat of 5.4 shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, the youngster can create problems in the attacking third with his eye for goal, potentially allowing him to play as a false nine under Poch.

Palmer also averages an 80% pass completion rate in the league this season, with both of his tallies considerably better than Jackson, who can only muster 2.8 and 78% respectively.

Given Chelsea's slim chances of achieving European football ahead of next season, coupled with their below-par performances, now is a great time for the Blues boss to experiment with his side and give other players an opportunity in a variety of different roles.

Chelsea’s new Mount could help them repeat Liverpool’s academy success

After a weekend where the club once again came within touching distance of a trophy, Chelsea need to try and find a way to end their unwanted run of cup final defeats in recent seasons.

The club have lost six consecutive cup finals since 2019, with the Blues losing their last three in a row to Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool, with the latest arguably the poorest defeat.

The Reds used seven academy products during the Carabao Cup final, with the players having an average age of just 20 years and two months – with Jayden Danns, son of former professional footballer Neil Danns, the youngster at just 18.

Klopp's side managed to find a way to win with his crop of promising youngsters, with Chelsea needing to adopt a similar approach and steer away from big-money signings in the transfer window.

In recent seasons, Chelsea have developed some brilliant talents, with Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill just two examples within Mauricio Pochettino's side.

However, there's one player within the club's academy who has impressed and should be fast-tracked into the Blues' current first-team setup.

Chelsea's next great academy talent

Despite his tender age of just 18, Leo Castledine is a player with a huge future at Stamford Bridge, with the attacking midfielder capable of making the step into Pochettino's plans.

The midfielder was part of the Cobham Academy as a youngster, before leaving the club to join lower league side AFC Wimbledon in 2013, before rejoining his boyhood club back in March 2020.

Castledine signed his Chelsea professional contract on his 17th birthday back in August 2022, with the youngster impressing for the club's academy in recent seasons.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He had featured on the bench multiple times for the Blues this season, before making his senior debut as a substitute against Middlesbrough during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The 18-year-old came on with just five minutes to go. However, he failed to make a real impact, with Chelsea already securing the victory before his introduction.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Chelsea's next Mason Mount inbound

Mason Mount was one of the last attacking players to come through Chelsea's academy, starring in loan moves to sides such as Vitesse and Derby County before making an impact on the Blues' first team.

Castledine, "who's similar to Mount" in the eyes of Chelsea’s U21s coach Mark Robinson, could benefit from a loan move to a League One or League Two side, giving him vital experience in men's football before making an impact under Pochettino.

The youngster has excelled for the Blues' U21s in Premier League 2, scoring seven times with eight assists in 14 games – with Castledine contributing to 44% of the side's goals so far this campaign.

Castledine has a huge future ahead of him, with Chelsea conducting brilliant business in bringing him back to the club in 2020.

Whilst he's still very young with a long way to go until he features within the Blues first-team, it's great to see a promising youngster coming through the ranks – with one eye ahead on the future.

Derby County would love to have Rooney’s "excellent" young talent back

Derby County shrugged off any signs of complacency at the top end of League One by confidently beating Port Vale 3-0 on Saturday, Paul Warne's Rams thankful for the straightforward three points after disappointingly falling to back-to-back defeats before.

Warne would have been delighted for his new recruit Dwight Gayle in the convincing victory, the 34-year-old former Newcastle United man firing in Derby's second of the afternoon to break his Rams duck.

In a hypothetical world, the experienced third-tier boss would love to have a certain Derby wonderkid of days gone by at his disposal to slot into the side alongside his brand-new veteran centre-forward.

Indeed, the idea of Malcolm Ebiowei still lining up in Derby colours would have given the promotion chasers something new in attack away from the seasoned heads currently making up the numbers.

Malcolm Ebiowei's time at Derby

Still just 20 years of age, young Derby hotshot Ebiowei certainly left a lasting impression on the Rams fanbase in such a short period of time when bursting through to the senior fold at the club.

Scoring a staggering seven goals from just eight games for the U18s, then Derby boss Wayne Rooney would thrust the teenage gem into the Pride Park spotlight amidst his side's growing relegation concerns during the 2021/22 season – handing the exciting attacker 16 appearances under his up-and-down Rams tenure.

Ebiowei would dazzle second-tier defences even when everything was turbulent at Derby, helping himself to a goal and two assists in this patch of matches given to him by Rooney.

Described as being "the best player on the pitch" during a 1-1 draw that same campaign against Coventry City by his manager, on top of being an "excellent" talent", it wasn't a shock to see higher-up suitors take advantage of Derby's eventual relegation and circle for the explosive attacker on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

Crystal Palace would win his services, in a move that now – with the beauty of hindsight – hasn't really worked out for the ex-Derby wonderkid.

Malcolm Ebiowei

Never really leaving his mark on the Eagles' first-team set-up – with only five fleeting first-team chances to date – Ebiowei now finds himself out on loan in Belgium playing for RWD Molenbeek away from Palace.

If Derby could rewind the clock and change history, the Rams wouldn't say no to having their former tricky winger back to terrorise League One defences on their way to promotion.

Why Ebiowei would be perfect for Gayle

Derby haven't quite cracked the perfect attacking formula this season, not helped by the likes of James Collins, Martyn Waghorn and Conor Washington causing selection headaches up top with injuries.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

That has been further troubled by the likes of Corey Blackett-Taylor failing to settle since making a major move from Charlton Athletic, leaving spots going forward potentially up for grabs.

Ebiowei would fancy his chances at breaking into the current Derby XI to help Gayle become prolific again, allowing the 34-year-old to be deadly after blowing off the cobwebs to pick up his debut goal against the Valiants.

The 20-year-old attacker would twist and turn third-tier defences on his arrival back to Pride Park, teeing up Gayle at the end of a mazey dart forward to fire home potentially.

Able to play down either the right or left wing, with the ability to even start as the striker if required, the likes of Tom Barkhuizen would be kept on their toes by Ebiowei's emergence back onto the Rams scene alongside key first-teamer Nathaniel Mendez-Laing needing to up his game.

In reality, Ebiowei will need to show Palace he deserves more chances at Selhurst Park playing out in Belgium – already impressing those at Molenbeek with an assist on his first league start against Standard Liege.

Warne and Co will just focus on picking up more wins back in England, hoping that Gayle ends up being a promotion-clinching hero down the line without Ebiowei by his side.

Striker required urgent medical attentionTaken to hospital for further treatmentIn stable condition & starting recoveryGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The 29-year-old required urgent medical attention after competing for a high ball during the Group A clash with Scotland. He was caught as Angus Gunn attempted to punch the ball clear, with team-mates immediately alarmed by Varga’s condition as he lay prone on the pitch.

A protective screen was erected using blankets, in order to give the player and physios some privacy, with Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai in tears before Varga was stretchered from the field and taken to hospital. It was later announced that Varga was conscious and “stable” in a Stuttgart medical facility.

A further statement from the Hungarian football federation read: “Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion. The Ferencvaros striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him!”

DID YOU KNOW?

Hungary boss Marco Rossi said of the scary incident: “I do not know if he suffered a clash with the goalkeeper or another opponent because it was a confusing situation. That is also why the VAR checked if there was a penalty or not. What I heard from the players was that Barnay in that moment looked not conscious. Everybody was really worried about his condition and also worried about the fact the doctors arrived a little bit late, shall we say. They probably didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation. Fortunately now we can say Barnay is not under any kind of risk. Probably he will be operated on in the following hours because he suffered a fracture. The most important thing is he is healthy. For sure, if we go through in this competition he will not be part of the team any more.”
