A frustrating end

Ugly might be an understatement to describe events on the final day in the SCG. A potentially cracking Test match was botched, an open series was all but shut and the beautiful scenes that the game produced were forgotten. This was a record-equalling Test containing contrasting centuries on all five days. But it ended bitterly. These are the sort of losses that can hurt. Tension enveloped the ground during the final stages as Australia packed close-in fielders around the bat. Anil Kumble, who produced one of his finest innings, battled gutsily and Australia’s part-time spinners fizzed it off the rough. Spectators prayed before every ball and cheered lustily after each. This was a cracking match played on a fine pitch. But it was tarnished.Rahul Dravid, out of sorts recently, appeared to be finding his groove. His 61-run partnership with Sourav Ganguly seemed to have eased the nerves, his positive attitude was just returning, the cover drives were being struck crunchily, a corner was being turned, and a game was being saved. And he was robbed.Ganguly flowed gracefully, counterattacking with gusto. So gorgeous were the three consecutive fours he struck off Andrew Symonds that the frames could be pasted on a picture postcard and sent back to Kolkata. He didn’t hold back against the faster men, trying to show that draws and style can go together. Until he was done in.These are the sort of abrupt endings that ruin a day’s cricket – competent batsmen suffering incompetent umpiring. When it happens in the second match of a series, with the scoreline reading 1-0, it is worse. When it happens against two of your best batsmen, it’s frustrating. And when the wickets change the complexion of the match, it is disturbing.Neither team seemed to agree on the legality of catches, despite an unwritten pact agreed upon before the series. Ricky Ponting couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about – he even scowled when someone questioned him claiming a catch after appearing to touch the ball to the ground. Anil Kumble didn’t need to say much more than one line – “Only one team is playing in the spirit of the game”, a statement bringing back memories of Bill Woodfull in the infamous Bodyline series.

Yuvraj Singh’s fourth successive failure was a reflection of the team’s flawed batting line-up © Getty Images
Amid this nobody should forget the hard facts. India failed to survive 72 overs in the second innings, a couple of batsmen played injudicious strokes and a few others felt the heat. Wasim Jaffer’s expansive drive just before lunch was reckless and Yuvraj Singh’s fourth successive failure was a reflection of the team’s flawed batting line-up. Has Jaffer been given a long enough rope? Does Yuvraj deserve a spot? These are hard questions that mustn’t be buried under the controversies. “It’s a bit of a concern,” said Kumble, “and we’ll address them in the practice game in Canberra. Those who haven’t got a chance will get a knock.”Australia’s tactics were simple: declare only after you ensure against defeat. They wanted India to go in with an intention to draw and choke them. No dangling carrots, no tempting targets. Bat them out and try to close the game. India would have known that, yet the runs were being leaked generously. Wasn’t this the best chance to dry up the runs and delay the declaration? Were they too lax in conceding 119 in 24 overs on a fifth-day pitch? Often they appeared to be waiting for the declaration, when, in fact, there was still a chance to win.Teams have their own ways to battle for a draw. Some attack as if it was the first day of the match, other sit on their haunches and prod. India needed to only look back to July last year to see they had got through more than 90 overs in the final innings at Lord’s. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at the centre of that draw and should have known better than to shoulder arms to one that came in, on a pitch where the ball wasn’t rising much.India will also remember that they saved that game thanks to rain and a small matter of an umpiring decision. England had reason to complain that day but had they lost, a fuse might have well blown out. Umpiring decisions matter, context even more so. It was heartening to see Kumble maintain his composure at the end of the day to say “it’s a game after all”. It was a reminder of what a fine Test match it could have been.

WTC final: Have India made a mistake in leaving out R Ashwin?

Did India fall into the trap of picking an attack that works only for the first innings at the WTC final? Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, certainly thinks so.Ponting said on television commentary that the dryness underneath the surface, which had more than just a sprinkling of live grass, would have brought him into the game, especially with Australia having four left-hand batters in the top seven – Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Travis Head and Alex Carey.”Australia have many left-handers; Ashwin would trouble the left-handers more than Jadeja. I saw the grass, yes there was grass but the deeper I looked, it seemed dry to me,” Ponting said on Star Sports.Former India captain Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, felt highly-skilled bowlers like Ashwin had the potential to take pitches out of the equation, so it was worth India taking a punt on him.”It need not be always a turning track as sometimes the spinners rely a lot on the bounce, sometimes that little bit of zip that they get off the pitch, also on the overhead conditions and it depends a lot on the shiny side of the ball,” he said in the build-up to the toss, on his website . “If they are able to get that drift, they can make the ball talk in the air without the pitch coming into play. So, The Oval is going to be good venue for India.”Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar echoed Ponting’s views on the surface, expressing surprise at Ashwin’s omission. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s analysis show Match Day, he cited Ashwin’s success against Australia, both in Australia (2020-21) and India (2022-23) and his overall record overseas since 2018.”It seems like they’re convinced this pitch is very seam-friendly, because Ashwin of late in overseas matches has been pretty good,” Manjrekar said. “There’s clearly a green look to it [pitch] but the soil underneath looked white to suggest there’s some dryness as well, and The Oval historically has never been a seaming pitch.”Manjrekar also felt Jasprit Bumrah’s non-availability may have influenced the team management, pushing them towards four seamers and one spinner instead of a 3-2 attack. With Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami picking themselves and India seemingly intent on playing Shardul Thakur for the all-round depth he lends alongside Ravindra Jadeja, it was between Umesh Yadav and Ashwin for the final spot and India went with the former. In Thakur’s favour, his previous performance at The Oval was match turning: twin half-centuries to go with three wickets to help India to a 157-run win and go 2-1 up against England in September 2021.Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, Manjrekar’s co-panelist on Match Day, also felt the absence of a fierce competitor like Ashwin in a contest as big as this may put “massive pressure” on India’s four-pronged pace attack.”It [Ashwin] would’ve been the first name I would’ve looked at [on the team sheet] if I was one of the [opposition’s] left-handers,” he said. “You want a player, especially in a big event like this, who walks towards the fire. And Ashwin’s definitely one of those guys against Australia.”He loves playing against them, gets into the contest. I know he gets under the skin of the Australian batsmen. One of the big successes India have had over Australia has been due to Ashwin’s presence. They’ll miss him out there and the pressure is on four quicks to put pressure on that middle order.”

Did the experience of the previous WTC final play a part in India’s decision?

Ashwin was part of India’s XI when they played the WTC final in 2021 against New Zealand in Southampton. Back then, India fielded three seamers and two spinners, while New Zealand played four specialist seamers and had a fifth option in allrounder Colin de Grandhomme. It’s a decision India rued later, as they lost in conditions where there was plenty for the fast bowlers all through – and rain around. Ashwin didn’t feature in any of the four subsequent Tests India played later in that summer against England. Were India scarred by that decision from 2021?”Maybe,” Manjrekar said. “But conditions were different. It was a venue where seam bowlers had to bowl. New Zealand had five seam options. I believe you have to look at the history of a certain venue and a pitch rather than how a pitch looks on day one.”Ashwin, for many reasons, would’ve been a good selection [here], plus he adds a bit of batting depth as well. The Ashwin we saw against New Zealand in that WTC final and the Ashwin of today, there’s a marked change in the way he bowls. This Ashwin you’d think would’ve done well in these conditions. Having said that, Jadeja against the left-handers isn’t too bad, maybe that is the reason why they felt we can still it do with one spinner.”

'Tricolor Parque'!

Jermaine Jenas vents frustration over the BBC's 'ability to take away my life' after sexting scandal that led to ex-England & Tottenham star's sacking and split from his wife Ellie Penfold

Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has spoken of his frustrations after being sacked by the BBC following a sexting scandal that also ended his marriage.

Jenas was sacked by the BBC in 2024 following a sexting scandal. The former midfielder subsequently apologised for sending "inappropriate" texts to female colleagues and admitted he needed help. The scandal also took a toll on his marriage, with Jenas confirming in March 2025 that he was splitting with wife of two decades Ellie Penfold. Jenas has since returned to work with talkSPORT and vowed to return a "better person".

    WHAT JENAS SAID

Jenas has spoken about the situation and revealed his frustration at his treatment by the BBC. He told Reece Mennie on his podcast: "It's been a really difficult moment for myself and my family what happened. I have always held up my hand and taken full responsibility for it, that’s very important to do. You go through a lot of different emotions of anger and blame, but eventually you realise 'take responsibility and you’ll be able to move forward.

"Because of their ability to take away my life, in terms of every deal I had, the jobs that I had at that particular time, I said that is never happening to me again. You’re in this kind of media bubble where you work for the BBC, there are so many walls in terms of what they want you to do and what you’re not allowed to do. So I've recently set up my own production company. My agency that I had at the time weren’t that supportive of it.

"Betting companies want to work with me because I’m in football. BBC hate that because of the issues to do with gambling in general, so they block all of that. So there were a lot of blocks on one side and football was bringing me some stuff, but the reality is that it all got wiped out. It all got taken away."

  • THE GOSSIP

Jenas also spoke about his regrets at the scandal which cost him his career at the BBC, adding: "It was a mistake that is something that me and my wife and my family have to deal with. I worked 10 years post-retirement from being a footballer and I can take it as far back as I want from starting from nothing to becoming a footballer to getting myself in a very fortunate position to work on television. It's a lot of hard work that you put into the job, but at the same time, it can be taken away from you like that. That's one thing that I've recognised."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bringing in a striker has been a priority for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta this summer, with Gyokeres emerging as their top target throughout the summer. The Gunners had explored other options, including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but moved quickly to secure the Swedish forward. Gyokeres, who was also linked with Manchester United, is now set for a move to north London.

'Barcelona's No. 10 is in very good shape' – Rivaldo sends message to Lamine Yamal as wonderkid set to take over iconic shirt at Camp Nou

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo sent a message to Lamine Yamal as the wonderkid is set to take over the iconic No.10 shirt at Camp Nou, following in the footsteps of the legendary Lionel Messi. While no formal announcement has been made by the club, it is widely understood that Yamal has given his blessing for the reveal to coincide with his 18th birthday.

At just 18 years old, the Spanish winger is expected to inherit the legendary No.10 shirt at Camp Nou, a number once worn by the likes of Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and most famously, Messi. Yamal's path to wearing the iconic shirt has been cleared by Ansu Fati’s loan move to Monaco.

Fati had held the No.10 jersey since Messi’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. His exit has left the number available for a new bearer, and Yamal’s rapid rise at both club and national levels has made him the clear frontrunner to receive the honour. Currently, Yamal wears the No.19 jersey, a number he has made his own with several breakout performances. The youngster initially debuted with No.41, then transitioned to No.27 before settling on No. 19.

WHAT RIVALDO SAID

Brazilian football legend and former Barça No.10 Rivaldo has publicly expressed his admiration for Yamal and his excitement about the youngster’s future. Speaking as an ambassador for Betfair, Rivaldo said he was thrilled upon hearing that Yamal would be taking on the number he once wore, especially given the player’s rapid development and international accomplishments with Spain.

"Barca's number 10 shirt is in very good shape," he said. "I think he deserves it, because this number demands a lot of responsibility, but he has a lot of personality."

Rivaldo emphasized that Yamal's mentality is what truly sets him apart.

"I don't think it's going to be a problem for him, because he plays with incredible calmness and doesn't seem to be the age he is when you see him on the pitch. Yamal has the personality that is expected of a 25 or 26-year-old player," he added.

DID YOU KNOW?

The timing of Yamal’s shirt change is not just symbolic; it’s strategic. Barcelona has just launched their new home kit for the 2025–26 season, and the club aims to align the release with Yamal’s promotion to the No.10 shirt. This move is part of a broader strategy to position him as the new global face of Barcelona.

Leicestershire promotion hopes washed away after Wharton bolsters Yorkshire

Early inroads with the ball raise home hopes before rain returns to ensure a draw

ECB Reporters Network22-Sep-2023Leicestershire’s slim chance of adding promotion to their Metro Bank One-Day Cup success was effectively washed away as their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Yorkshire finished as a draw following more rain on day four at Grace Road.Every effort was made by the ground staff to make the playing area fit to resume after heavy post-lunch showers but after the teams had been off the field for three and a half hours, umpires Neil Bainton and Neil Pratt found that parts of the outfield were still wet and abandoned the contest just before 5pm.The Foxes, in third place in the Division Two table, knew that only a win in this match would be enough to keep alive their chance of travelling to Chester-le-Street for the final round of fixtures next week with any realistic chance of joining their hosts, Durham, in Division One next season. To rub salt in Leicestershire’s wounds, they seem likely to lose one of their three bonus points because of a slow over rate. With promotion rivals Worcestershire held to a draw against Durham at New Road with three bonus points, it would leave a 22-point gap between the sides going into the final round next week. That means Worcestershire – with five wins to Leicestershire’s three – need only to pick up two bonus points in their final match against Yorkshire at Headingley to confirm their own promotion and leave the Foxes disappointed even were they to take maximum points at Chester-le-Street.Leicestershire felt a win could be within their grasp as they reduced Yorkshire to 140 for 4 in their second innings on the final morning, leaving the visitors effectively 62 for 4 with still potentially 82 overs remaining in the contest.Yorkshire were 225 for 4, 147 in front, with James Wharton unbeaten on 58 and George Hill on 32 when the players left the field for what turned out to be the last time at 1.32pm.After the final day began on time and in sunny conditions, Leicestershire’s bowlers made two breakthroughs in the first 35 minutes and a third on the hour but any notion that they might run through Yorkshire’s batting in short order dissipated in what remained of the first session.Chris Wright sent middle stump out of the ground to remove nightwatchman Ben Coad, Tom Scriven claimed an important scalp when Shan Masood edged to second slip, and Will Davis struck with his first ball of the day as Adam Lyth stepped across his stumps to be pinned in front trying to work the ball to leg.At that point, with Wharton having edged Scriven just short of second slip the over before, Yorkshire were wobbling a little, just 62 in front. But after Hill had taken three boundaries in as many balls off Davis and Wharton picked up three fours off Scott Currie in the next over, the momentum shifted enough for Yorkshire to stretch their advantage to 131 by lunch with no further losses.A sumptuous cover drive gave Wharton a 10th four and his fifty – a third in just eight first-class matches – immediately after the interval. There were still 65 overs left in the match but even given good weather, the chances of a positive outcome were shrinking, unless the captains were amenable to reaching one via a contrived route. But only 22 balls could be bowled in the afternoon before the first of three heavy downpours forced the players off the field. It meant that only 147 overs of cricket had been possible over the whole four days, with no play possible at all on day two.

Orta sold him for £840k: Leeds must rue losing "dangerous" Aaronson upgrade

Leeds United maintained their place at the top of the Championship table on Saturday when they held Queens Park Rangers to a 2-2 draw at Loftus Road.

Daniel Farke’s side found themselves 2-0 down in the first-half and staring down the barrel of a second successive defeat away from home in the league.

However, an own goal from Morgan Fox just before half-time and a close-range finish from full-back Jayden Bogle just after the break ensured that they came away with a point for their troubles.

The Whites are now only two points above Burnley, who started the gameweek in third place, and their grip on the automatic promotion places is loosening.

Farke may not be best pleased with some of the individual performances that were on display in West London against the R’s, as several of his stars failed to step up and showcase the best of their abilities.

Brenden Aaronson made a loose pass that directly set up Koki Saito for the opening goal before being hauled off, for Wilfried Gnonto, at the break, in what was the latest in a worrying line of disappointing displays from the American.

Brenden Aaronson's disappointing run of form

The attacking midfielder, who was on loan at Union Berlin in the 2023/24 campaign, has gone eight games without a goal or an assist in the Championship, starting all of those matches.

Aaronson has also managed just one goal and zero assists in his last 14 appearances in the second tier, all as a starter, which shows that he has struggled to make much of an impact at the top end of the pitch.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been a consistent starter under Farke, despite his recent struggles in the final third, and it will be interesting to see if his latest error against QPR will change anything in the matches to come.

Leeds are in a race to win automatic promotion to the Premier League and their first-choice attacking midfielder, Aaronson, has consistently struggled against the other five teams in the current top six in the division.

As you can see in the table above, the former RB Salzburg star has not produced a single goal or assist to show for his efforts in his ten appearances against the top six sides.

This suggests that the midfield whiz, who has scored eight goals and provided two assists against the other 18 teams, does not have the quality to be a difference-maker against the top teams in the Championship.

Aaronson has not been a reliable figure for Leeds in possession throughout the season, hence his fairly unimpressive return of goals and assists and poor record against the top six, and supporters will be hoping that they do not miss out on promotion as a result of his struggles.

Market Movers

The Whites should be particularly disappointed with the USA international’s performances in the number ten position this season, because they once sold a player for £840k who has gone on to become even better than Aaronson – Mateusz Bogusz.

Mateusz Bogusz's soaring market value since leaving Leeds

Leeds signed the attacking midfielder from Ruch Chorzow at the start of 2019 and he managed three first-team appearances for the club before his permanent move to LAFC in March 2023.

Reporter Manuel Veth claimed that the MLS outfit agreed a fee of €1m (£840k) to sign the Polish starlet from the Whites, as sporting director Victor Orta decided to part ways with the youngster.

Former Leeds midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

The West Yorkshire outfit must, now, rue that decision to bin him for just £840k during Orta’s tenure at Elland Road because he has shot up in value since his exit from the club.

At the time of writing (16/03/2025), Bogusz is valued at €10m (£8.4m) by Transfermarkt following his move to Mexican side Cruz Azul from LAFC in the January transfer window, which is a staggering increase of 1,090% from the fee Leeds raked in for his services.

The Whites must also regret selling the Poland international because his form for LAFC in 2024 suggests that he would be an upgrade on Aaronson in the current Leeds team.

Bogusz, who has also racked up one goal and three assists in nine games for Cruz Azul to date, scored 24 goals and provided 19 assists in 90 matches for LAFC, with the majority of those contributions coming in the 2024 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old attacker was in outstanding form for the American side last year, racking up 24 goal contributions in 36 matches.

Bogusz, who was once described as a “dangerous” player by reporter Greg Beacham, has the quality to offer more as a finisher and a creator for his side from an attacking midfield role in comparison to Aaronson, as evidenced by their respective statistics.

The Polish ace has the ability to significantly outperform his expected tally of goals, whilst the Leeds man has spurned too many chances to score, whilst also creating more high-quality opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net.

Farke may have unearthed the new Raphinha in "electric" £50k-p/w Leeds star

Daniel Farke may have found Leeds United’s new version of Raphinha at Elland Road.

ByDan Emery Mar 15, 2025

Therefore, Orta made a mistake when he decided to sell the attacking midfield star for just £840k in 2023, as his value has shot up by more than 1000% in the space of just two years, and his performances suggest that he could even improve Farke’s current team.

Wolves have finally found their new Raul Jimenez and it’s not Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers crashed out of the FA Cup on penalties at the weekend to Bournemouth in what was yet another poor result for the Old Gold.

It was capped off by star man Matheus Cunha receiving his marching orders in the final minute of extra time, which means he will miss several matches over the next few weeks.

The striker joined Wolves in 2018 ahead of their first season back in the Premier League, going on to score 17 goals in all competitions.

The following campaign was even better. Not only did the Old Gold finish seventh for the second season in a row, but Jimenez found the back of the net 27 times while chipping in with nine assists. Wolves even reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Jimenez’s talents in the final third were exceptional, but injuries soon began to plague him. A horrendous skull fracture in November 2020 ruled him out for the rest of the season and he was arguably never the same in the Midlands.

He would go on to score just nine further goals for the club, struggling to recapture his early form at Molineux and was sold to Fulham in the summer of 2023 for just £5.5m.

Jimenez has since scored 18 goals for the London side, with Wolves failing to find a proper heir to his cult hero status.

Wolves have found their next Raul Jimenez

If not the aforementioned Cunha, might Jorgen Strand Larsen be the ideal candidate?

The Norwegian striker joined the club on an initial loan deal last summer, which will be made permanent at the end of the season.

Seven goals and three assists is hardly the most prolific of returns, but three of these goals have come against Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham Hotspur, suggesting he loves playing against a higher-quality opposition.

Hailed by journalist Josh Bunting last August, he outlined qualities, specifically his ability to be in the right place at the right time, that evokes memories of Jimenez: “His movement off the ball really stands out to me,” Bunting noted. “He’s sharp on the ball and gets into the space really well.”

When compared to his positional peers in the Premier League, Larsen ranks in the top 1% for shots on target percentage (63.9%) per 90 and in the top 24% for aerials won (2.27) per 90. For context, Jimenez ranks in the top 21% for aerials won with 2.64, outlining their similar prowess when the ball is off the deck.

The 25-year-old will surely get better the more he plays in the top flight. With Cunha suspended due to his sending-off in the FA Cup clash against the Cherries, Larsen will need to step up over the next few weeks.

If he can score the goals which keep Wolves in the top flight, the supporters might rank him in the same breath as Jimenez.
