Transfer insider drops interesting Tierney to Celtic claim

Celtic could struggle to pull off a sensational swoop for former star Kieran Tierney according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Scotland international left the club for £25m in the summer of 2019 and has now been linked with a return to his boyhood club.

What is the latest news about Kieran Tierney's transfer?

According to reports, Tierney "won't close the door" to a potential return to the Bhoys this summer, with the return of former manager Brendan Rodgers to Parkhead potentially a major factor in convincing the 26-year-old to return to Scotland.

The report states that despite the Northern-Irishman receiving a £30m transfer budget for this summer, a permanent switch may still prove too costly for the Scottish champions, with a season-long loan a greater possibility.

However, the recent sale of fan-favourite Jota to the Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad for a fee of £25m could have potentially freed up more funds to make a permanent switch a greater possibility

Celtic aren't the only club interested in the full-back, with reports stating both Newcastle United and Premier League champions Manchester City hold an interest in signing Tierney, with the Magpies boss Eddie Howe thought to have been confident of completing a deal in the region of £30m.

According to Football Insider, the defender has still not heard from Arsenal about whether he is in the club's plans for the 2023/24 campaign, with no conversations between Arteta and Tierney having taken place.

According to Jones, whilst Celtic hold interest, they may not be able to fund the return of their former star.

What has Jones said about the potential transfer?

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Jones stated that the North London club's unwillingness to change their asking price could prevent the Bhoys from signing Tierney.

The transfer insider said: "Newcastle were put off by it recently. And it doesn't seem like Arsenal are gonna budge. I just don't know if I could see Celtic getting to those levels right now. Obviously, they have got the Jota money, but [I'm] not sure that that's exactly where it's gonna go."

Should Celtic "break the bank" for Kieran Tierney?

Bringing their former star back to Parkhead this summer would be a major statement of intent from both Celtic and Rodgers.

The 38-time capped Scotland international enjoyed a very fruitful tenure at the Scottish League champions previously, making 170 appearances for the club, scoring eight and assisting 37 from left-back as the club went on to win 11 trophies across his five-year stint, including five league titles in a row.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

Since his move to Arsenal in 2019, it has been a mixed bag for the 26-year-old. Under former manager Unai Emery, the left-back shone, earning praise from fans and pundits alike and becoming a leader within the squad. This continued following the arrival of current boss Arteta, under who Tierney won the only trophy of his Gunners career so far in the FA Cup in 2020.

However, following a knee injury he suffered in March 2022 that kept him out for the remainder of that season, the Isle-of-man-born defender has struggled to break back into the starting line-up ahead of Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko, with the left-back not being a natural fit in the inverted role that the manager is employing on that side.

The Bhoys currently have two natural left-back options at the club, in Greg Taylor and Alexandro Bernabei, however, with the latter failing to hit the heights expected last season, the club could pick up their former left-back to offer some incredible competition to Taylor who impressed last campaign.

Should Tierney want to get his career back on track, a move to Celtic, where he could reignite his previous form which secured him his move to the Gunners, may be the perfect first step on that road.

Mominul, Jahurul extend Gazi Group's lead at the top

A round-up of the Dhaka Premier League matches played on May 9, 2017

Mohammad Isam09-May-2017A rain interruption in the 21st over of Gazi Group Cricketers’ chase meant they defeated Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 24 runs via the DLS method, and maintain their four-point lead on the Dhaka Premier Division League points table.Sohag Gazi had bowled five balls with Gazi Group 114 for 2 in their chase of 233 when play had to be stopped at the BKSP-4 Ground. When play was finally called off at 4.50pm, Gazi Group were 23 runs ahead of the par score.No. 3 Mominul Haque clobbered seven fours enroute to his 45-ball 46, while opener Jahurul Islam remained unbeaten on 49 off 56 balls. Their 68-run partnership for the second wicket took them close to the revised target of 91, after Gazi removed Anamul Haque in the sixth over.Earlier, Dhanmondi Club scored 232 for 9 in 43 overs after rain interrupted their innings. Fazle Mahmud (38) and Prashant Chopra (35) added 62 for the second wicket before they fell on consecutive deliveries. Tanbir Hayder subsequently steered the innings with his 57 off 54 balls. For Gazi Group, all six bowlers used were among the wickets, with Abu Hider and Mahedi Hasan bagging two apiece.Events at the adjacent BKSP-3 Ground were predictably similar with the DLS method facilitating a 17-run victory for Brothers Union over Kalabagan Krira Chakra.Kalabagan’s decision to bat found little validation from their line-up as no batman managed to get into the thirties. While run-outs sent openers Mehrab Hossain jnr (28) and Jashimuddin (25) back, Brothers Unions’ pair of Nihaduzzaman and Manvinder Bisla took five wickets between them, with Bisla dismissing three lower-order batsmen. Nuruzzaman and Muktar Ali’s sixth-wicket partnership of 48 runs guided Kalabagan towards 150 before they folded for 171 in the 43rd over.Brothers Union reached 82 for 1 in 22.2 overs when rain interrupted play, with Junaid Siddique (38) and Bisla (31) having added 70 runs, ensuring their side was 17 runs ahead of the par score.Rain didn’t spare the contest between Prime Bank Cricket Club and Partex Sporting Club at the KSOA Stadium in Fatullah either. Similar to the other two games, the chasing side, Prime Bank, ended up playing more than 20 overs, and won the game by a 37-run margin.Prime Bank had raced to 114 for no loss in 24 overs, after their target was reset to 175 in 40 overs due to a rain interruption. Openers Mehedi Maruf and Zakir Hasan sored 52 and 55 respectively.Earlier, Partex were bowled out for 192 in 46.2 overs with Jony Talukdar top-scoring with 69 off 86 balls. He peppered six fours and two sixes and shared a 78-run opening stand with Jatin Saxena (40). Asif Ahmed’s dismissal of Talukdar in the 29th over triggered a collapse, with Partex losing four wickets for 14 runs. While Asif finished with 2 for 34 from his 10 overs, Nazmul Islam dented the lower order to return figures of 3 for 23 from seven overs.

Knuckle ball my most powerful weapon in T20s – Tye

Making his IPL debut on Friday, Gujarat Lions fast bowler Andrew Tye gave ample evidence of why the knuckle ball is the most potent delivery in his repertoire. He came on to bowl the final over of the Powerplay, after Rising Pune Supergiant had raced to 60 for 1 in five overs, and stalled the opposition by conceding four runs and taking the wicket of a well-set Rahul Tripathi. He returned in the 13th over to pick up Ben Stokes’ wicket and, charged with bowling the 18th and 20th overs, Tye gave away only 10 runs and took a hat-trick in the final over.Over 60% of Tye’s deliveries were knuckle balls bowled at slower than 120 kph, and he got four of his five wickets off that delivery. The only bowler to take a hat-trick and five-for on IPL debut, Tye’s 5 for 17 was crucial in giving Lions the first win of the season. The hat-trick was his second of 2017, the first coming for the Perth Scorchers in a Big Bash League match against the Brisbane Heat.”It has probably taken me five-six years to get to the stage where it [the knuckle ball] is today,” Tye told “I have practised it hard and have practised with the right intent. Now, it is my most powerful weapon in T20 cricket.”Unlike the hat-trick I took in the Big Bash, I actually knew it was a hat-trick ball. It came out perfectly as sometimes you try too hard and it just doesn’t go right. You always go back to your run-up and think ‘What ball am I going to bowl?’ I had decided I’d bowl a slower ball before I ran in. I was able to get it on the stump and the batsman missed it.”Although his debut came only on Friday, Tye isn’t exactly new to the IPL scene, having spent two seasons on the sidelines of franchises. Bought by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2015 auction, and by Gujarat Lions a year later, Tye spent a considerable amount of time bowling to international batsmen in the nets and this, he believes, has allowed his game to develop quite well.”Even if you are not playing, India is a great place to develop your game and learn from the best players in the world. Playing with the international players and the Indian players, my cricket has really come on. It only leads to the development of your game.”This morning our Coach Hodgy (Brad Hodge) told me ‘Get set to play. You’re definitely playing’. To get a wicket in the first over settled me down. I came here with nothing to lose. When you’ve waited that long for a chance, you got to take it. I was happy the way I came out and performed tonight.”

Journalist Hands Leeds Boost Over 11-Goal Midfield Target

Leeds United remain keen on signing Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer this summer, according to an update from transfer expert Dean Jones.

How many goals did Gustavo Hamer score in 2022/23?

The 26-year-old enjoyed a fantastic season for the Sky Blues on a personal level, and was his side's second-best player as per WhoScored, with influential forward Viktor Gyokeres also catching the eye.

Hamer was a fulcrum of the midfield, bringing an attacking spark in that area of the pitch, scoring 11 goals and registering 10 assists in the Championship. He even scored in the playoff final defeat to Luton Town, highlighting his big-game pedigree in the process, and Coventry would have really struggled to replicate their performances without him around.

It could be that the Dutchman wants a new challenge heading into the 2023/24 season, however, eyeing a move to a bigger club and potentially earning more money at the same time. Leeds have emerged as a potential destination for the midfielder, as Daniel Farke and the 49ers Enterprises look to conduct some eye-catching summer transfer business.

Hamer has been linked with a move to Elland Road a number of times recently and a fresh claim has now emerged, as the rumour continues to persist.

gustavo-hamer-coventry-championship-leeds-transfers

Do Leeds want to sign Gustavo Hamer?

Speaking on the Fulhamish Podcast [via The Boot Room], Jones talked up the idea of Leeds making a move to sign Hamer ahead of Fulham during the current transfer window.

"I think it’s Leeds who are actively looking at him right now, and we would have the jump on them. I was told by someone at Leeds that that was genuine interest from them and they have been pursuing it, if that’s your main competition for someone like Hamer then there is a lot of sense in seeing if you can get something done."

It really does look as though Leeds see Hamer as a primary transfer target ahead of the new campaign, with their opening Championship clash at home to Cardiff City arriving three weeks on Sunday. He certainly has the ability to be a brilliant signing for the Whites, adding a spark in the middle of the park that was too often lacking last term.

One player who did impress in that area was Tyler Adams, but it looks increasingly as though he could depart this summer, with Aston Villa eyeing a move for him, stressing the need for midfield reinforcements.

Hamer has shown that he can shine in the Championship, having played such a big role in Coventry getting to within touching distance of promotion to the Premier League last time around, and his game could go up a further level if he is suddenly surrounded by superior player, as would likely be the case at Leeds, even if certain key men move on.

The former Netherlands Under-20, Under-18 and Under-15 international has been described as both "outstanding" and "absolutely incredible" by Coventry manager Mark Robins, who has made it very clear how highly he rates him as a player. If Farke sees him as someone who could slot perfectly into his system and be an immediate star player, bringing him in should be considered a no-brainer.

Leeds Could Lose £38k-A-Week Defender This Summer

Leeds United defender Robin Koch is now wanted by Serie A champions Napoli this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Which players are leaving Leeds?

The Whites' relegation from the Premier League last month was a bitter pill to swallow for anyone associated with the club, following three years back in the top flight of English football.

It will create problem for so many reasons, not least the fact that Leeds are going to find it extremely difficult to keep hold of key players beyond the summer. Playing in the Championship will not appeal to many of their top young talents, especially if they have the opportunity to return straight to the top level at another club.

A host of current Whites heroes are being linked with summer moves away from Elland Road, with the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Jack Harrison among those in the mix to depart.

Koch is another who has been tipped to move on, however, as he looks for a new challenge.

Leeds United's Robin Koch

Is Koch potentially joining Napoli?

According to Sky Italia journalist Franceso Modugno (via Gianluca Di Marzio and Sport Witness), Napoli are eyeing up a summer move for the £38,000-a-week defender, as they look to bring in a tailor-made replacement for centre-back Kim Min-jae, who looks set to join Bayern Munich.

The report claims that the Serie A giants see Koch as a strong target because he "stands out for his physicality and ability in aerial play", with a bid now possibly in the offing.

In truth, these are the sort of departures that Leeds simply have to accept in the summer transfer window, with someone of Koch's standing no doubt intrigued by the idea of joining a Napoli side that excelled so much last season.

While it would be nice to see the 26-year-old stay put with the Whites and help them make a speedy return to the Premier League, it is difficult to be too critical of him moving on if a club of such stature comes in for him.

Granted, Koch hasn't always covered himself in glory for Leeds, starting 36 of his side's 38 league games en route to relegation in 2022/23, but he has been hailed as a "machine" by teammate Max Wober and he would be a loss, certainly boasting the physicality to thrive in the second tier.

The fact that the German's current Whites deal expires next year does make this a realistic time to sell him and receive good money, though, which is the one positive to take from his likely exit.

Man United Eyeing Move For "Fast" £30m Premier League Player

Manchester United appear to be keen on possibly bringing Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to Old Trafford.

Are Man United interested in signing Robert Sanchez?

The Red Devils unveiled Mason Mount as their first summer signing on Wednesday, with the midfielder penning a deal until 2028 and the option of a further year in a deal worth a total package of £60m.

Arriving from Chelsea, the England international could be the first of many through the door ahead of Erik ten Hag’s second season in charge, with a new goalkeeper now seemingly next on the agenda.

Reports have suggested that Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is a real target, with an Old Trafford contract already agreed upon between the player and United.

However, a fee still needs to be agreed with Inter and Man United have verbally proposed a new £39m offer for his services. The Serie A side want around €60m, though, which could result in United looking elsewhere, where Sanchez comes into play.

According to The Daily Mail, Man United and other Premier League clubs are circling over a potential move for Sanchez.

The Spaniard has fallen out of favour under Roberto de Zerbi, with Jason Steele number one on the south coast and Bart Verbruggen recently brought in from Anderlecht for £16.3m.

As a result, Sanchez could be on the move this summer, and United view him as a cheaper alternative to Onana as he is valued at £30m.

Robert Sanchez

Who is Robert Sanchez?

Sanchez, who shares the same agency as Luke Shaw, first moved to Brighton from Levante back in 2013 and has come through the youth ranks with the Seagulls.

The 25-year-old, now a full Spain international, spent time out on loan with the likes of Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale during the early stages of his career, turning out on 17 occasions in League Two and 26 in League One.

He broke into the first team setup during the 2020/21 season and has made a total of 90 senior appearances for Brighton, keeping 29 clean sheets, one of which came in the FA Cup semi-final with the Red Devils last season.

He is under contract until 2025 and earns £25,000-a-week with his current employers, and he came in for praise from former Brighton boss Graham Potter, who labelled him as ‘powerful’ and ‘fast’ who has ‘everything to be a top goalkeeper’.

“He is a monster in terms of his physicality. He’s not just big but he is powerful, he is fast.

“In terms of attributes as a goalkeeper, he has got everything to be a top goalkeeper.”

As per WhoScored, Sanchez averaged more passes and had a better completion rate than De Gea last season, whereas he stopped more crosses and averaged a shorter average length of goal kick than Onana, as per FBref. This shows how he could suit Ten Hag’s style of playing out from the back, and by the looks of things, a move could be one to keep an eye on.

Southampton: Martin Could Soften JWP Blow With £4m Leader At St Mary’s

Southampton are expected to lose some key players between now and the end of the transfer window, as long-serving skipper James Ward-Prowse and in-demand pair Romeo Lavia and Tino Livramento continue to be linked with the St Mary's exit.

What players have Southampton sold?

Since finishing bottom of the Premier League, and thus finding themselves in the Championship this coming season, Southampton have sold Mislav Orsic to Trabzonspor and released the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Theo Walcott.

In truth, none of those losses will be majorly felt as the south coast side seek an instant return to the big time, but that could soon change given the speculation surrounding the aforementioned trio of Ward-Prowse, Lavia and Livramento.

There does not seem to be a top-flight side that has not shown an interest in Lavia, with Liverpool now looking well-positioned to sign the defender, while Livramento is supposedly wanted by Chelsea and Newcastle United.

The Saints could raise large sums for both, but it goes beyond money alone when it comes to Ward-Prowse. However, the Daily Mail claims Southampton are in talks with Everton for Mason Holgate, which could go a long way to softening the blow of the club captain departing.

What position does Mason Holgate play?

While Holgate has featured as a holding midfielder at times, he is a centre-back by trade who can occasionally fill in on the right. That means he is not a like-for-like replacement for West Ham United target Ward-Prowse, but Russell Martin is no doubt already on the lookout for a central midfielder.

Instead, Holgate can take over from Ward-Prowse – assuming the fan favourite does indeed move on this summer – in terms of his leadership qualities.

The 26-year-old has previously captained Everton and has been hailed as a "leader" by the Liverpool Echo's Sam Carroll. Southampton still have plenty of quality in their squad, but they lack obvious leaders beyond Ward-Prowse.

As someone who has been on Everton's books since 2015, Holgate is clearly loyal and also a team player, given he has had to be patient for his limited opportunities at Goodison Park.

That is not to mention the other qualities Holgate can bring to Southampton, such as his ability to clear the ball and tackle opponents – arguably the two most important traits for any centre-back.

Holgate ranks in the top 11% of all centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for clearances per 90 minutes (4.97), according to FBref, as well as the top 21% for interceptions per 90 (1.24).

The Doncaster native is also capable of bringing the ball out from the back, ranked as he is in the top 11% for successful take-ons per 90 minutes (0.53).

While it must be factored in that Holgate – valued at around £4m by Football Observatory – only played 508 minutes of Premier League football last season, the numbers show that he stood up when called upon.

If the former England U21 international now has to drop down a tier to play regular football, it may well be that Everton's loss is Southampton's gain.

Dhoni, Sundar vault Pune into the final

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:59

‘Last two overs of Pune’s innings made the difference’

After being asked to bat on a favourable chasing ground, Rising Pune Supergiant lost the majority of the first innings. But it was an atypically slow surface at the Wankhede Stadium and Rising Pune utilised those conditions better than Mumbai Indians did to clear a path to their maiden IPL final.Rising Pune defended 162 comfortably in the end, by 20 runs, for their third win over Mumbai this season. Mumbai, despite having squandered the shootout for the final in front of a packed home crowd, will have a second chance in the second qualifier in Bengaluru on Friday. At the forefront of a sublime bowling performance was teenage offspinner Washington Sundar. His fuller-than-good length and straight lines meant the batsmen were not able to attack either side of the wicket with any conviction. His quick pace didn’t let them get under deliveries either. The 17-year old finished with 3 for 16 from four overs and the Man-of-the-Match award. The harder task on the night, though, was with the bat. Manoj Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane struck patient fifties, setting a platform for MS Dhoni to use his wiles and hitting prowess at the end to help Rising Pune finish with a decent score and sufficient momentum.A strong start
In Mumbai’s last league game at this venue, Kings XI Punjab defended a total of 230 by just seven runs. Even with the possibility of dew and the short boundaries, Rising Pune may not have been aiming that high after losing the toss, but they knew they needed to get close.Planning, check. Execution, a big red cross. Rahul Tripathi fell over a flick and was bowled. Steven Smith’s leading edge was snaffled up at backward point. Rising Pune were 9 for 2 in two overs. The surface may have been slow, and Mumbai’s variations were effective, but after that start, a score of close to 170 was the best Rising Pune could hope for, which meant Mumbai were never out of the game.Different pitch, same Dhoni finish
Rising Pune had laboured to 121 for 3 after 18 overs. The five overs prior to that yielded just 32 without a wicket as Mumbai’s bowlers found the right length to Dhoni and Tiwary. Dhoni’s strike rate in his first 10 balls in the IPL, before this game, was 88.52. Against Mumbai, he could only muster 14 off his first 17 balls. But then Mitchell McClenaghan, not for the first time this season, missed his yorker. A high full-toss was hit for four and the resulting free-hit went for six over long-on. Dhoni anticipated McClenaghan’s good or short length in the second half of that over, and sat back to hit two sixes.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Jasprit Bumrah hadn’t pitched anything in Dhoni’s half all through the match. But in the final over, he gifted two good length balls that were smashed for sixes as Rising Pune plundered 41 off the last 12 balls. Their score of 162 was below par at this ground, but the momentum and confidence – of having defended a similar score before on this ground earlier this season – was firmly with Rising Pune.Falling behind from the start
Rising Pune had only one way forward – exploiting a two-paced Wankhede surface. Even if they didn’t get early wickets, they had to keep Mumbai in check because batting was going to get harder. Jaydev Unadkat brought out his offcutters in the first over and conceded just one run. Mumbai were already behind the game.Parthiv Patel hit 33 off 16 in the Powerplay, but Mumbai lost three wickets. Lendl Simmons was run-out, backing up too far at the non-striker’s end. Rohit Sharma was undone by umpiring error, given out lbw despite a thick inside edge. Ambati Rayudu found midwicket with a pull; the second wicket in Sundar’s over. Mumbai were 42 for 3 inside the fielding restrictions and behind the asking rate.Undone by conditions
Timing shots and picking slower deliveries was getting tougher. Why? After a bowler releases his delivery, batsmen pick the speed through the air and then adjust accordingly. But with the ball gripping the surface, it came onto them slower than expected. Mumbai, having played seven league matches on an even, true Wankhede pitch, weren’t used to that pace. Unadkat used his slower balls, Shardul Thakur his knuckle balls and Sundar an effective change in pace, to thoroughly flummox Mumbai’s batsmen.

Everton Plot Move For £15m Premier League Ace

Everton confirmed their first signing of free agent Ashley Young earlier this week and now a new update has emerged on another Premier League player who could be the next to make a move to Goodison Park.

What's the latest on Everton's interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi?

According to 90min, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer.

As per the report, the west London club have given their young player the green light to leave Stamford Bridge and now he is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs including Nottingham Forest and Fulham, alongside Everton.

Hudson-Odoi is now in the last 12 months of his contract and Chelsea have made contact with clubs across the world to offer the opportunity to sign their academy graduate.

How good is Hudson-Odoi?

There is no doubt that strengthening the attacking threat will be the top priority for Sean Dyche this summer, as the Toffees' biggest problem last season was scoring goals and lacking creativity in the final third.

It seemed inevitable that Everton would suffer a struggle in front of goal following the departures of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon, as well as injury issues continuing to plague Dominic Calvert-Lewin's availability, and when the 38-game campaign finished last season they were the second-lowest scoring team (34) in the entire top flight.

As a result, the signing of Hudson-Odoi could be a great opportunity for Dyche to repeat the club's masterclass move the last time they acquired the services of another out of favour Chelsea player.

Romelu Lukaku memorably joined Everton on loan from the Blues in 2013, scoring 16 goals in his debut season and made his move away from the London outfit permanently the following summer signing a £28m five-year-deal, after playing just 15 times for Chelsea at the age of 21.

The Belgian striker went on to score 87 goals and register 29 assists over 166 appearances for the Merseysiders in total, before being sold three years later for £75m to Manchester United.

Now Hudson-Odoi could follow in his Chelsea teammate's footsteps, as the 22-year-old could finally earn the first-team football he seeks and prove his worth at Goodison Park in the forward line.

callum-hudson-odoi-premier-league-everton-transfers

Over 126 Chelsea appearances so far, the Cobham graduate – hailed "amazingly talented" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 16 goals and registered 22 assists to date, an output that would be a valuable asset to Everton next season.

Not only that, Hudson-Odoi is extremely versatile with experience of playing on both the left and right wing, as well as in the attacking midfield role too, so a move could offer Dyche a player who can cover a number of positions to provide depth across the attacking threat.

With that being said, if the £15m price tag reported is accurate it would be a no-brainer to snap up the services of Hudson-Odoi this summer, as a real chance at first-team football in the Premier League next season could be the making of the Champions League winner, just like it was for Lukaku.
