Brilliant Ben Cox takes Worcestershire to T20 title as calm Moeen Ali leads from the front

Moeen Ali starred with bat and ball and another outstanding spell from Pat Brown had held back Sussex’s innings

Social story: Worcestershire take Finals Day glory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThroughout the Blast season the refrain had gradually become louder: Sussex have the finest bowling attack in T20, certainly in England, perhaps in the world. But Worcestershire survived it, ultimately relished it, the youngest side in the tournament, the county that had never been to Finals Day, emerging victorious by five wickets with nine balls to spare.Worcestershire’s rush to victory came suddenly, perhaps unexpectedly. When Jofra Archer’s full toss accounted for the destructive left-handed hitter, Ross Whiteley, they needed 32 from 19 balls with five wickets left, on a pitch beginning to feel the exhaustion of an 11-hour day. It was not alone in that: this is an intoxicating day in more ways than one.But Ben Cox, one of the finest, most underrated wicketkeeper-batsmen in the country, saw Worcestershire through with an unbeaten 46 from 27 balls, challenging Sussex’s pace attack with innovative flicks and glances. He was helped on his way by a single, stray delivery by Archer – a no-ball beamer which flew for four byes as his attempted scoop turned into a duck for cover, a resulting free hit and a six over square leg to exact full retribution. For Moeen Ali, Worcestershire’s captain, a calming influence on a young side, satisfaction was immense. No recent summer has passed without suggestions he is leaving Worcestershire. He has stayed. And he has returned from a long England summer to guide them to glory. At the end, the team dashed on to celebrate, Moeen walked on, a captain seeking to do the right thing. “I’m not one for running on the field too much,” he said. “You have to win and lose with dignity and respect. You have to respect Sussex’s position. They had obviously lost a tough game. The guys were buzzing and they were allowed to run out but as a captain you have to lead the team in the right way.”Moeen pays tribute to Rhodes

Moeen Ali paid tribute to Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s former coach, who left the county after 33 years after an internal dispute.
“It’s been a tough ten years. I want to give a special mention to Bumpy Rhodes who put this team together and unfortunately is not here to see it, but I’m sure he will be very proud that all these guys he brought through in the Academy are doing well and we are just reaping the rewards.
“To lead a great bunch of guys with no ego is very special. To get through the quarter-final broke a mental block for us. We are a young side and I’m sure we can get better.”

“He’s just a human being, same as the rest of us,” said Worcestershire’s head coach, Kevin Sharp, in the build-up the Vitality Blast Finals Day when asked how it was that Moeen integrated himself so successfully into the Worcestershire side when he returned from England. But Worcestershire must have yearned for something superhuman as Moeen organised their pursuit of Sussex’s 157 for 6. It was the sort of score that an army of data statisticians might have chosen to make the chase exactly 50-50, but Worcestershire had to contend with a T20 bowling attack which has had admiration thrust upon itNo England cricketer feels as embedded into his county side as Moeen. He will even play relegation matches for Worcestershire in the next fortnight. He reached 41 from 27, rocking back to haul the left-arm spin of Danny Briggs over midwicket, majestically driving legspinner Will Beer over extra, and finding a valuable ally in his opening partner, Joe Clarke, who made 33 from 27 in an opening stand of 61 in 6.5.Worcestershire were still reasonably comfortable at 80 for 2 at midway. Then a ball later Brett D’Oliveira was stumped, pushing forward at the left-arm spin of Briggs and the pressure again clamped down. When Moeen fell to a tumbling catch in the deep at long-off by Phil Salt off Beer, they still needed 68 from 47 with six wickets left, the job far from done. He was so caught up in the game that he almost wandered into Sussex’s dugout by mistake.Worcestershire can also celebrate one of the great nought-fors in Blast finals. Pat Brown’s unrewarded four-over spell cost only 15 runs, but his exceptional economy rate compressed Sussex’s innings every time he had the ball in his hand. Such is his trickery, honorary membership of the Magic Circle should await.Brown is slight figure for a fast bowler, barely 20, and looking as if you would want to know what time he would be back when he went out for his birthday celebration. But he is a master of deception already. His stock ball is his knuckle ball, but as a variation he bowls a decent offcutter and can also up his pace above 80mph. The Blast is drawing quality from England’s young cricketers and those who disparage it are not observing closely or kindly enough. He began the final with 31 wickets, four freshly gathered in Worcestershire’s semi-final defeat of Lancashire: only Danny Briggs, who took 31 for Hampshire in 2010, and Alfonso Thomas, 33 for Somerset in the same season, could rival that. Sussex saw him off, but when it came to formulating an attacking response they found him unfathomable.Luke Wright found himself nodding down the pitch in recognition of Brown’s quality. The highest score on T20 Finals Day – 92 in the semi-final victory against Somerset – and a judicious 33 from 25 in the final: for Wright it was a good day, the highest combined runs total ever achieved. But it was not just a judicious innings but slightly careworn. It took some strong blows down the ground – two fours and a six – off Ed Barnard to take Sussex to 78 for 2 by midway, but he was that second wicket, one ball before the end of the 10th over, when Moeen bowled him on the charge. At the end of the Powerplay, Sussex were only 43 for 1, Salt falling wastefully. Salt’s strokeplay can be as disdainful as any young player in the country, as two sixes quickly testified, but he was distraught at his carelessness when he jogged an easy single to backward point, had both feet beyond the crease, but had both in the air when D’Oliveira’s pinpoint throw broke the stumps.Moeen took wickets at vital times. Delray Rawlins, who had begun with consecutive sixes in D’Oliveira’s sole over of leg spin, smoothed over long-on and square leg in turn, holed out to Moeen off a leading edge at long-off, his balance all asunder; David Wiese chopped on to be bowled.Laurie Evans has held Sussex’s innings together all season, and his 52 from 44 balls followed a familiar pattern, but Sussex’s innings died away as it had in the semi-final. It was workable score but only such a fine attack, on a surface about to withstand its sixth innings of the day, could have had confidence that they could defend it. Cox ensured otherwise.

CoA split over Rahul Johri allegations

Vinod Rai has named a three-member panel to investigate charges but Diana Edulji wanted the CEO to quit or be fired

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Oct-2018The BCCI’s Committee of Administrators has split down the middle, and in public, over the handling of harassment allegations against the board’s chief executive Rahul Johri. The chairman, Vinod Rai, has announced a three-member independent committee to investigate the allegations, but his decision overrides the preference of Diana Edulji, the other CoA member, for Johri to resign or to have his contract terminated. These details were part of a remarkable press release issued by the BCCI late on Thursday night, which made public the deep divisions between the two CoA members. It announced the panel, to be chaired by Rakesh Sharma, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, and also including PC Sharma, a former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation – India’s premier investigating agency – and Barkha Singh, a former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, and said it would report its findings and recommendations within 15 days.Johri had been the subject of an anonymous complaint on Twitter on October 12 and has since gone on leave. He has also denied the allegations made against him, the release said. While looking into the allegations against Johri, the release added, the committee “may take into account and/or probe all allegations of sexual harassment against Mr. Johri while he was employed with the BCCI.”However, the release explained in detail the lead-up to the appointment of the committee. It said the CoA met on October 20 and 22 on the issue, when Rai favoured the setting up of an independent committee “in order to follow due process of law and principles of natural justice.”Edulji, the release said, felt that Johri should resign or have his contract terminated since he “has such grave sexual harassment allegations against him” and “it would not be in the interests of BCCI and Indian cricket that he represents BCCI.”Rai, the statement said, did not agree and felt that an independent inquiry was necessary as the tweet was anonymous. It also pertained to a period much before the CEO joined BCCI and it was necessary to provide natural justice to the CEO by following a due process of law. It said he “was very clear” that, in similar instances, the person against whom allegations had been made were permitted to represent their case before an independent committee which would then take a considered view after weighing all evidence.Edulji then said she felt that such an inquiry was not called for or appropriate and that there was sufficient ground for Johri’s removal. She then informed Rai that she would approach senior Supreme Court lawyer Gopal Subramanium “for further guidance if no action is taken and the CEO is allowed to continue”.The statement then said that, after taking legal advice and “soliciting view-points from other relevant quarters”, the proposed members of the independent committee were contacted for their consent.Johri has been on leave since the allegations surfaced, and he was stood down from attending last week’s ICC chief executives’ committee meeting in Singapore. Following the announcement by the BCCI of the external panel, Johri will be kept away from his job and his current workplace until the external committee conveys its decision to the CoA, and not until October 29 as earlier announced.

"Joy" – Sky pundit says Ange has turned one Tottenham star into a workhorse

A pundit has told Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has now drilled one Spurs star into working very hard.

Spurs form and results this season

The Lilywhites look transformed by Postecoglou's arrival; winning seven out of a possible nine Premier League games while remaining unbeaten in that period. Victories over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley, Sheffield United, Liverpool, Luton Town and Fulham have helped table-topping Tottenham to their finest start since they clinched a double in the 1960/1961 campaign.

Postecoglou has also broken a record, overseeing the best start made by a new manager in Premier League history. The mood around north London is one of real positivity and jubilation right now, and alongside their popular head coach, supporters have a key players to thank for their meteoric early-season rise. Son Heung-min, who's already scored seven top flight goals this season, has formed a very fruitful partnership with summer signing James Maddison in the forward areas.

Heung-min Son and James Maddison

Indeed, Maddison joined Spurs from Leicester City for £40 million over the last transfer window (BBC) – a fee which now looks like one of the bargains of 2023. His three goals and five assists, not to mention overall performances, have attracted real praise. The midfielder has also dazzled at international level, with England manager Gareth Southgate praising Maddison as a player who brings the "sunshine".

“He is in a really good vein of form," said Southgate at an England press conference.

"A really good character around the group. He connects people well. We have got the more steady, serious guys & we have a lot of guys who bring a lot of sunshine."

Aaron Lennon praises James Maddison

It's one of English football's worst kept secrets that Maddison is a serial creator going forward, having also notched a brilliant 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League for Leicester last campaign. Now, he's found a new set of fans to entertain with his quality on a weekly basis, and it appears the sky may very well be the limit.

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has lavished Maddison with praise on Sky Sports as well, but it's for an aspect for his game you wouldn't usually associate that often with the star playmaker. Lennon has spotted something different which Postecoglou has drilled into his game – namely that he's now working very hard out of possession.

“Yeah, at the minute he’s on absolute fire," said Lennon to Sky (via Football Daily) after their 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday.

"I was watching him and he completely dictated the game. He was working hard off the ball, I think the new manager has got that into him. He must be a joy to play with, as one of those front players with him behind you, if you make the run he’ll find you. He’s the man of the moment at the minute."

Maddison will next be in action against Crystal Palace on Friday, as Spurs look to maintain their incredible run and remain top of the table.

Postecoglou hit the jackpot with Celtic signing who is now valued at £20m

Celtic endured a difficult period over the summer as they lost a number of key figures, on and off the pitch, after their treble-winning 2022/23 campaign.

Ange Postecoglou led the club to a domestic treble and, within weeks, then secured a switch to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to take his career to the next level.

On the pitch, the Hoops lost key first-team stars as Carl Starfelt and Jota – for an astonishing £25m – were both sold and Aaron Mooy confirmed his retirement.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

They did, however, manage to keep hold of central midfielder Matt O'Riley after they reportedly rejected offers from Bologna and Leeds United for the Denmark U21 international.

However, speculation over the future of Brendan Rodgers' star players has not gone away since the end of the summer transfer window and the Northern Irish head coach may be concerned ahead of the turn of the year.

The January window will provide clubs with the opportunity to come in and make offers for Celtic's best gems, with Kyogo Furuhashi being one of them.

Celtic transfer news – Kyogo Furuhashi

TEAMtalk recently reported that the Japan international is being eyed by Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin and Premier League side Brentford.

The Bees are said to be looking at the Hoops centre-forward as a possible replacement for England international Ivan Toney, if the centre-forward completes a move away from Thomas Frank's side in January.

It is not stated whether or not either of those clubs are now preparing to make an offer for his services, or how much they would be willing to spend on him.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

However, the outlet did report that it would take a bid of around £20m in order to tempt the Scottish giants into parting ways with their talismanic marksman midway through the 2023/24 campaign.

The Hoops do not want to lose any more of their best players and are holding out for a significant fee, as they did when Jota left for £25m, whilst it is stated that O'Riley is 'likely' to move on.

It is also worth mentioning that TEAMtalk claim Kyogo is very happy in Glasgow and is in no rush to move on from the club, which does not suggest that the forward will throw his toys out of the pram and push for an exit in January if other teams do come in for his services.

This puts Celtic in a strong position and one that could see them make a sizeable profit on the Japan international, whose £20m valuation shows that Postecoglou hit the jackpot when he signed him in 2021.

The fee Celtic paid for Kyogo

The Hoops reportedly spent just over £4m to secure his services ahead of the 2021/22 campaign after his impressive form for Vissel Kobe in Japan.

Kyogo arrived in Scotland off the back of an eye-catching first half of the 2021 J1 League campaign with his former club as a lethal goalscorer.

The impressive finisher, who was hailed as "outstanding" by Postecoglou, racked up an exceptional 15 goals and two assists in 20 league starts, which highlighted his ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

This came after his return of 13 goals and five assists in 25 J1 League starts for Kobe throughout the 2020 season. These statistics show that he improved over the course of his last two seasons in Japan as his scoring rate increased with more experience at that level.

In total, Kyogo scored 49 goals and provided 18 assists in 111 matches for the Japanese outfit, which came after 17 goals and 18 assists in 77 appearances for FC Gifu at the start of his senior career.

His sublime form in his home country convinced Postecoglou and Celtic to splash around £4m to secure his signature and that has turned out to be a bargain for the Scottish giants.

Kyogo's goal record for Celtic

The 5 foot 7 marksman has been a consistently reliable figure at the top end of the pitch for the Bhoys at Scottish Premiership level over the past two-and-a-half seasons.

Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo hit the ground running in Scotland with an excellent return of 12 goals and four 'big chances' created in 16 top-flight starts for the side during the 2021/22 campaign.

He followed that up with an incredible 2022/23 season as the Japan international consistently punished opposition teams to help the Hoops secure the title.

The 28-year-old whiz ended the term with a staggering 27 goals and two assists in 31 Scottish top-flight starts for Postecoglou, which proved that he has the quality to find the back of the net at an exceptional rate at that level.

His amazing performances were recognised by his peers as Kyogo was crowned the PFA Scotland Player of the Year for the 2022/23 campaign. This showed that his fellow professionals viewed him as the top performer in the country for his fantastic goalscoring exploits.

The ex-Vissel Kobe star's output has slowed down this season as the forward has only found the back of the net six times in 13 Premiership games. However, he is still the club's top-scorer, alongside Matt O'Riley and David Turnbull, and remains the figurehead of their attack.

Kyogo has also shown signs of being a great option on the European stage for Celtic with two goals in four Champions League appearances for Rodgers so far this season, with strikes against Lazio and Atletico Madrid.

Why Postecoglou hit the jackpot with Kyogo

The former Hoops boss struck gold with the signing of the Japanese dynamo as he has proven himself to be a fantastic player on the pitch for the club with his consistent stream of goals at Premiership level.

His current £20m valuation by the Bhoys, amid interest from other teams in Europe, also shows that his value has rocketed up during his time in Scotland.

£20m is a staggering 400% increase on the roughly £4m that was paid to secure his services from Vissel Kobe just over two years ago under Postecoglou.

Therefore, Celtic would make a gigantic profit on Kyogo in January if they now decide to cash in on him, should a side come in with an acceptable bid within that region.

Spurs’ "phenomenal" loan star has been outscoring Richarlison & Scarlett

The recent two-match skid must not detract from Tottenham Hotspur's sensational start to life under Ange Postecoglou, who has restored the feel-good factor after a tumultuous few years.

After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, Spurs have charged into the ascendancy this term and occupied pole position until defeat against Chelsea at the start of last week.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

A deluge of injuries and suspensions meant that the squad was somewhat threadbare heading to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, and despite leading for 87 minutes, the hosts' Pablo Sarabia inspired a dramatic late turnaround.

While Postecoglou has undisputably orchestrated a revolution down the N17, not all have reached their peak yet; Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero were among the underachievers last year, now revived, but despite an upswing, Richarlison still cuts a divisive figure.

Richarlison's Tottenham career

Signing from divisional rivals Everton for £60m in July 2022, Richarlison severely struggled across his first campaign in London, only scoring once in the league and being branded as "useless" by The RedMen TV's Chris Pajak.

This year, he has been better, posting one goal and three assists from ten Premier League outings, which means that he is now just one direct contribution behind last year's total despite playing 17 fewer fixtures.

The £90k-per-week forward does also rank among the top 13% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists per 90, as per FBref, emphasising the import of his presence to Tottenham.

The Brazilian is among the absentees at Tottenham right now, sidelined for several weeks following a groin operation, and while Brennan Johnson is firing himself into form, Richarlison's "relentless” running – as has been noted by Goal editor Joe Strange – will be missed.

There is hope. Off the bench in September, it was Richarlison's contribution that proved definitive against lowly Sheffield United, bagging a goal and assist apiece in the dying embers to maintain early renaissance that placed the club near the front of the Premier League table.

Such an influential display bespeaks his best qualities and big-game potential, and this is something that will need to be captured and shaped when he returns from his current injury.

If he can rediscover the clinical touch that served him so well at Everton, Postecoglou could find a dangerous weapon at his disposal, but considering that he has been outscored by Spurs starlet Troy Parrott since joining the club, he will need to make significant improvements to bring his career to its apex.

Troy Parrott's career so far

Parrott is not quite among the current wave of prodigious talent pervading Spurs' youth academy right now, but at 21-years-old, he remains an exciting prospect and has been earning his stripes out on loan for the past few years.

Having plundered 31 goals and six assists from 38 matches for Spurs' development sides the 20-cap Republic of Ireland international (with four goals) has been touted for a good career, and while he still has progress to make, there is definitely a natural goalscoring ability to be nurtured.

Last season, Parrott enjoyed a loan spell with Preston North End in the Championship, scoring four goals from 22 starts, though he was perhaps unfortunate to be plying his trade with the division's second-lowest scorers.

Speaking of his loan addition, Preston manager Ryan Lowe said: "His work rate is phenomenal. For the size of him, he is a bit of a unit inside. He's not massive, but very strong, uses his body very well & he got down the sides plenty of times."

Now on the move again, Parrott's rate of scoring is something that Postecoglou will be aware of, even if he isn't earning starting appearances on every occasion.

Troy Parrott's season by numbers

After his spell with Preston last season, Parrott completed a season-long loan move to Dutch side Excelsior, following in the footsteps of former Lilywhite, Marcus Edwards.

Hailed for his "exciting" performances in the Netherlands this season, as per Alasdair Gold, Parrott has scored three goals and supplied one assist from nine matches in the Eredivisie.

*Sourced via WhoScored

As per Sofascore, the Irishman has only played from the outset on two occasions, and given that he is averaging 30 minutes per match, this equates to a goal per 90.

Parrott will hope to start earning greater opportunities from the opening whistle, but having proven his worth through his predatory skills, he will surely earn chances to impress further over the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

While the striker would be hoping for a regular starting berth, he is outperforming fellow Spurs loan star Dane Scarlett, who, albeit only 19-years-old, has yet to score or assist from ten outings on loan with Ipswich Town in the Championship.

Scarlett is considered one of the club's most promising starlets and earned some valuable experience with League One side Portsmouth last term, scoring six times and registering two assists across all competitions, starting 19 times in the league.

But, clearly, he still needs time to grow into his skin; Parrott, based on his goalscoring record this season, may well be confident enough in striking on goal to effectively serve Postecoglou, and given that there is a lack of depth in the first-team, he might have been a valuable tool to hold within the pack.

Having now scored seven times since Richarlison arrived at Spurs, Parrott is outscoring the five-goal Spurs player, and while circumstances differ, this is something that Postecoglou will be desperate to bring up a notch, else a time will come when his hand may be forced regarding the £60m man's future at the club.

With talented hopefuls such as Parrott and Scarlett snapping at his heels, maybe the sharpened cutting edge that all Spurs supporters hope for will materialise, but if it doesn't, and the club's Australian manager feels inclined to dip into the transfer market, such budding talents will be able to serve as understudies.

"Would be a huge blow…" – BBC pundit reacts to "crazy" West Brom update

A BBC pundit has described a potential exit rumour surrounding one West Brom hero as "crazy", with his Hawthorns future up in the air at the moment.

West Brom's January transfer plans

The Baggies may have lost 2-1 away to Southampton in their last Championship game, but they still find themselves in a good position to finish in the playoff places this season. Granted, they have just slipped out of those positions and into seventh place currently, but they are only behind Sunderland on goal difference, and look primed to continue their good run for the rest of the campaign.

When the January transfer window opens in the New Year, there will be a chance for West Brom to bring in some new faces, with Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles seen as a transfer target. On the flip side, Baggies midfielder Tom Fellows has been linked with a move away from the club in January, with his contract at the Hawthorns expiring next summer.

Tom Fellows West Brom exit claim

Speaking to Football League World, BBC pundit and former England international Carlton Palmer described talk of Fellows potentially leaving West Brom as "crazy".

"Tom Fellows, West Brom's talented young forward, is attracting attention from elsewhere. West Brom are working hard to get Tom to commit to a new long-term contract and are hopeful of doing so.

"Tom's contract expires in the summer – I can't understand why West Brom have put themselves in such a difficult position before the January transfer window, it's just crazy. Before he commits to a new long-term contract, I'm sure Tom will want assurances about much-needed game-time.

"West Bromwich Albion need to do everything in their power to get him to sign a new contract – failing that they need to sell him in the January transfer window, which would be a huge blow for the club given he has come through the youth ranks and the academy and the money that's been invested in him.

"I really can't believe that clubs are still at this moment in time are not securing the services of talented young players on long contracts, and then putting themselves in the position that WBA have currently done."

Palmer is spot on in his assessment that West Brom have played the situation surrounding Fellows' future badly, with the 20-year-old now in a position where he could look for a new challenge and even leave for free at the end of the season, if he doesn't sign a new deal.

The Englishman has been hailed as "very quick" by Baggies manager Carlos Corberan, and still has so much to give the team, even if Fellows' statistics so far this season show that he has only made seven appearances in all competitions, all of which have been from the substitutes' bench.

While the youngster leaving in January wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world in the short-term for West Brom, they should be looking to keep hold of their best emerging talent, so losing him would have to be considered a blow, especially if it was to a rival.
