Allegri given marching ordersConfronted fourth official after decisionYet Juve prevailed 1-0 over AtalantaWHAT HAPPENED?

The Bianconeri put in a remarkable defensive performance to eke out a hard-fought clean sheet against an enterprising Atalanta after Dusan Vlahovic scored the decisive goal as early as the fourth minute. Known for his passionate demeanour, Allegri's reaction to a refereeing decision took his behaviour to unprecedented extremes.

The incident occurred when referee Fabio Maresca did not immediately call a foul for a push on Juventus defender Danilo in the penalty area. In a fit of rage, Allegri tore off his jacket and furiously screamed at the fourth official. His actions earned him a red card, leading to his dismissal from the touchline. Not content with simply exiting, Allegri sarcastically applauded Maresca's decision, removed his tie, and began unbuttoning his shirt. The Juventus coach's theatrics continued as he shouted "shame on you" and demanded to know "where is Rocchi?" referring to the refereeing designator, into the stands.

Danielle Wyatt keen to convert potential into performances for good

England batsman cops ODI criticism on the chin as she eyes big score in second T20 against India

Annesha Ghosh in Guwahati06-Mar-20191:07

‘Too good to not be in the team’

England batsman Danielle Wyatt has owned up to her struggles matching potential with performance in ODIs, having put those concerns to rest briefly with her maiden ODI fifty in her 63rd appearance in the format, against India last week in Mumbai.Wyatt reached the milestone a game after she was dropped from the starting XI, in the second ODI, after which England captain Heather Knight explained the decision was based on Wyatt’s inability to “transfer” her explosiveness in T20s to the longer format.”I was unaware she said those comments,” Wyatt said of Knight in Guwahati on Wednesday, having helped England to a 1-0 lead two days before in the ongoing three-match T20I series with an 89-run opening stand alongside Tammy Beaumont. “But it’s probably fair enough. It’s taken me 60-odd games to make my first ODI fifty, which is frustrating.”I’ve shown my talent in the T20 game. It’s just a matter of showing what I can do in ODIs. So to get that first fifty and help us win that last ODI was a bit of a relief, really. Hopefully that’s a start to more runs to come [in the format].”After England’s loss in the second ODI, Knight had underlined that dropping Wyatt in favour of Lauren Winfield wasn’t a decision based solely on Wyatt’s 6-ball 1 in the first ODI.”Danni’s been slightly upsetting the way she’s been getting out,” Knight had said after England’s 66-run defeat in the second ODI. “She’s been outstanding in T20 cricket. She’s become one of the best T20I cricketers in the world, but she hasn’t quite managed to transfer that into ODIs yet.”She’s had a lot of opportunities and she has a lot of talent. We set the challenge for her to try and be the best finisher in the world in ODI cricket. She hasn’t shown that yet… the way Lauren has played in the nets, she’s put pressure on Danni for us to pick her ahead of Danni.”The punt worked in England’s favour to some extent with Winfield making an enterprising 49-ball 28 to help arrest a collapse in the company of half-centurion Natalie Sciver although England lost the game and the series. Had it not been for an injury to left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, though, Wyatt may not have figured in the starting XI in the series ender, where she scored her maiden ODI half-century to deny India a 3-0 whitewash.Mark Robinson, the England head coach, echoed Knight’s assessment of Wyatt’s struggles to deliver on her promise as a potent ODI batsman.”Danni is incredibly frustrating and immensely talented, and a pleasure to be around at the same level,” Robinson told ESPNcricinfo. “She’s got all the skills and attributes, but sometimes it’s about joining it all together. When we left her out, I said to her, ‘You’re too good not to be in this team.'””It’s just that she needs a little bit of extra control at times. We don’t want to put shackles on her because she’s such a naturally talented ball-striker.”Danielle Wyatt plays one to the off side•Getty Images

Robinson also underlined that as with every other member of the England women’s squads, Wyatt’s job in the two limited-overs sides has been clearly outlined and explained to the 27-year-old batsman.”Her job is to win games for England, her job is to finish games off,” Robinson said. “And at times to accelerate the scoring rate, take risks at times, at times is to sit in and stop the bleeding, and that’s what she must do when batting at No. 6 and 7. The more she does that, she won’t be out of the team. That’s the message.”At the top of the order [in T20Is], she must play with freedom and take on the Powerplay and the best bowlers in the world, and occasionally play with control so we can make sure we convert good scores into big scores”.Wyatt said the challenge for her to attune her style of play to the two formats was more mental than tactical, and that she was aware of the role her coach and captain required.”It’s all in the head,” Wyatt said. “[In] T20, just go out there. My job at the top of the order is to explode from ball one, really, whereas in ODI, you’ve got a lot more time to think. It’s more about knocking the ball around.”What the coaches have said is they don’t want me to lose my aggressive play – the way I play. In that first ODI, I guess that loose shot from me… [I] probably deserved to get dropped in the second ODI, but [I] bounced back in the last game.”Heading into the second T20 in Guwahati, which will be played on a different track at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Wyatt said an encore of her blinding 124 against India at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai last year may not be too far away. In her three appearances for England on this tour, she has made 1 and 56 in the two ODIs, and fell for a brisk 35 in the first T20I.”I want to perform in every game, every time I play for England, “Wyatt said. “Obviously, I’ve got that 124 at the back of my mind, in Mumbai. I know I can do that [here]; it’s definitely that [kind of] wicket. Hopefully in the next two games I can get as many runs as I can.”

Arsenal could solve striker woes by sealing £39m "Trossard type signing"

Just a few weeks ago, Arsenal were travelling back to London following an impressive draw away at Anfield and celebrating that they would be top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day. Everything was looking good for Mikel Arteta's men.

However, three losses from the three games that followed have left the Gunners in fourth place, out of the FA Cup and in the midst of a mini-crisis.

While the whole team has slipped as of late, the main culprits for this poor run of form are the frontline, as rather shockingly, they have scored just one goal from the 63 shots they have had since their draw against Liverpool.

This lack of goals has clearly worried the club, as the latest player touted for a move to N5 has been on fire in La Liga and could have an impact similar to Leandro Trossard's last season: Getafe's Borja Mayoral.

Arsenal transfer news – Borja Mayoral

According to The Sun, Arsenal have made an official £22m bid for Getafe's in-form striker, Mayoral.

The report has revealed that the former Real Madrid star's exploits for the Madrid-based side have caught the Gunners' attention as they desperately look for a goalscorer this month, although unfortunately for Edu and Co, their offer has already been knocked back.

The Sun claims that the Deep Blues are holding out for an offer closer to their £39m valuation of the Spaniard, which could cause problems for an Arsenal side that are reportedly hamstrung by FFP concerns at the moment.

That said, if the club can find a way to make this deal work, it could be precisely what they need to get the season back on track, especially if he can replicate the sort of impact Trossard had when he arrived last January.

Borja Mayoral could replicate Leandro Trossard's impact last season

There are evident parallels between the Trossard transfer last year and this potential move for Mayoral. Data analyst Ben Mattinson seems to agree, as he has described this possible transfer as a "Trossard type signing" – and he's right.

When Arsenal signed the Belgian international from Brighton & Hove Albion last January, the reception was rather reserved. It wasn't necessarily that fans were unhappy with the tricky wideman's arrival; it was more the disappointment at losing out on the much more expensive – and shiny – Mykhailo Mudryk to London rivals Chelsea that left fans feeling somewhat deflated.

However, fast-forward a year – or just a couple of months really – and it was the west Londoners who were regretting their choice in the transfer market thanks to the instant and brilliant impact that Trossard had made in N5, finishing the season with one goal and ten assists in just ten starts.

Similarly, much of the talk surrounding Arsenal's hunt for a new striker this month has focussed on the far more expensive and better-known – to English fans – Ivan Toney. The Brentford man would still likely be an excellent option for the club, but with him costing potentially £100m, Mayoral is the smarter option.

Moreover, the performances of the Spanish "goal machine", as described by journalist Dean Jones, this season have been a level above Arsenal's strikers, as Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus' combined ten league goal involvements pale in comparison to his 13.

Ultimately, it might not be the flashiest or most exciting of transfers.

Still, neither was Trossard's move last January and with how well Mayoral has been performing in Spain this year, there is no reason to suggest that he could not replicate the Belgian's impact when he signed last season.

Newcastle could repeat Joelinton masterclass by signing PL "pressing machine"

Before December, Eddie Howe's worst-ever period at Newcastle United came right at the beginning of his tenure, as his side picked up merely five points from a possible 21 in his first seven matches in the St. James' dugout.

However, after spending around £400m throughout his spell in charge, the Magpies have now lost seven of their last eight matches in all competitions and Monday's defeat at Anfield against Premier League leaders Liverpool piled further pressure on the manager.

Nevertheless, with the January window now open, Howe could add to his squad in an attempt to stop the rot and has reportedly set his sights on one player from a league rival.

Newcastle United transfer news – Andrey Santos

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United have enquired to Chelsea about midfielder Andrey Santos, who is currently out on loan at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. It was previously reported that Chelsea were unhappy with the Brazilian's lack of minutes at the City Ground and were set to recall him from his loan this month, with the Magpies keen to bring him to the club.

Andrey Santos Chelsea

After completing his move to Stamford Bridge last year for £18m from Vasco da Gama, Santos was sent out on loan to the Tricky Trees during the summer to acclimatise to English football. However, the youngster has played merely 97 minutes this season for Forest, including just seven minutes in the Premier League. Santos' last appearance for his loan club came away at Anfield back in October.

Now, the 19-year-old could be recalled from his disappointing stint in Nottinghamshire and may be an astute signing for Newcastle, particularly on loan as Howe recently admitted that FFP will be a constraint for the side this winter, meaning dipping into the loan market could be the way forward.

Andrey Santos' stats comparison vs Sean Longstaff

Newcastle's midfield has been a problem area for the club this season. This department has been left quite bare in recent months due to injuries and suspensions to the likes of Joelinton and Sandro Tonali, leaving Howe hamstrung with his decision to constantly deploy Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park. The boyhood Geordie has made 24 appearances in all competitions already this term.

kalvin-phillips-sean-longstaff-newcastle-opinion

The problem is, since Tonali was handed a season-ending suspension early into the campaign, Howe has been forced to keep Bruno Guimaraes in a deeper position as Newcastle's holding midfielder which has caused the creative and goalscoring burden to fall onto Longstaff. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old has managed merely five goal contributions this season, including three goals and two assists.

While Santos has yet to register an assist in his professional career, the 5 foot 11 teenager has still outscored Longstaff and was outperforming the latter's output from this term in several key metrics from his time with Vasco da Gama, particularly from a defensive standpoint.

While Longstaff has proven himself to be more productive in the attacking phase, Santos' defensive nous would be more beneficial for Howe's team, who conceded a Premier League record 7.27 xG against Liverpool on Monday, to be more resilient out of possession, hence why football scout Jacek Kulig once described Santos as a "pressing machine".

Having Guimaraes as the deep-lying playmaker, supported by Santos and Joelinton could be more advantageous for Newcastle right now.

Compared to all other number '8s' in Europe's top-five leagues this season, Joelinton ranks in the top 20% for tackles won per 90, the top 15% for interceptions per 90 and the top 17% for blocks per 90, having been converted into a box-to-box midfielder by Howe back in 2021.

Howe could potentially repeat this masterclass by signing another Brazilian gem – Santos – on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Crystal Palace submit January offer to Arsenal over Eddie Nketiah transfer

Crystal Palace have submitted an offer to sign Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, with those at Selhurst Park already receiving a response.

Crystal Palace target January signings

The Eagles appear to be after some winter window additions before the deadline, with rumours suggesting Palace would like to sign a new central midfielder and left-back. Roy Hodgson admitted last month the need for new signings due to a number of injury problems within his squad.

“All clubs have a very strong department in terms of recruitment and scouting, and so it seems to me that's an ongoing process.

“Sometimes [that] gets accelerated at a time if a club finds itself in a position where there are a lot of players that perhaps have got to be replaced for one reason or another and, as a result, the jeopardy becomes a bit stronger because you suddenly start to realise that our squad has been seriously depleted and in order to get back up the strength we have to do something about it.”

Alongside a new midfielder and a new full-back, another attacking addition could be required, with Jean-Philippe Mateta ready to leave the club. West Ham striker Danny Ings has been rumoured as a Palace target, however, the club have already made an offer for another Premier League striker in Nketiah.

Crystal Palace make Eddie Nketiah bid

According to Football Transfers in the last 48 hours, Palace have already submitted a loan offer with an obligation to buy Nketiah in the summer. The report adds that the Gunners ‘are still not close to signing a striker this window so any possible sale of Nketiah is off the table for now’, and as a result, have turned down Palace's proposal.

Arsenal could still land a new attacker of their own before the deadline, though, which may well open the door for Nketiah, on £100,000-a-week, to leave the Emirates later this month.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

The 24-year-old has been on Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman’s radar for some time now, with reports last summer claiming he was their number one target. Although they have been knocked back with their loan-to-buy bid, it does seem as if a move isn’t completely dead this month, should Arsenal land a forward of their own.

If the Englishman makes the move across London, then Palace would be getting themselves a forward who has already registered 10 goal contributions this season and has made over 100 Premier League appearances.

Earning the praise of Arteta as a result of his performances, the Arsenal manager has labelled Nketiah as "incredible".

“It was a great goal but I think overall his performance was incredible. The way he understood the pressing, his intensity, the way he counter-attacked certain spaces, the composure he showed. And then he stayed patient. And in the box he produced a moment of real quality to win us the game.”

Ireland captain suggests Foakes' stumping of Balbirnie should have been called dead ball

William Porterfield claims games could end up lasting “15 hours” if all keepers started following Ben Foakes’ lead

ESPNcricinfo staff04-May-2019Brilliant piece of wicketkeeping or pushing the Laws of the game? Ben Foakes’ stumping of Andy Balbirnie in Friday’s ODI between Ireland and England left many praising his smart glovework, but Ireland’s captain, William Porterfield, was less impressed and afterwards suggested the ball was “pretty much dead”.The issue of a wicketkeeper waiting behind the stumps for the merest hint of a batsman lifting his foot is not quite as contentious as running out a batsman backing up – and Porterfield declined to make a comparison with Mankad dismissals – but similar questions were asked in some quarters about the legitimacy of such stumpings by stealth.Porterfield was more concerned about the tactic delaying play, if wicketkeepers regularly sought to wait for a batsman to accidentally leave his ground, and suggested games could end up lasting “15 hours” .”You can say it was great wicketkeeping or you can say it’s a bit of a grey area of ‘when is the ball dead?'” Porterfield said. “The ball was pretty much dead. The batsman wasn’t going anywhere or over-balanced. The keeper has waited for three or four seconds. If we do that all day, it’s going be a pretty long game. How long do you wait? We’ll be playing 15-hour games if you wait that long.”

On the subject of whether it was similar to Mankading a batsman at the non-striker’s end – recently (and controversially) employed by R Ashwin when running out Jos Buttler in the IPL – Porterfield suggested this was a different matter.”He [Balbirnie] was probably more unhappy that he did lift his foot a little bit as he wasn’t going anywhere or trying to do anything,” he said. “The ball is pretty much dead like. On another day, that ball is probably [thrown by Foakes] into the covers.”Foakes himself saw the dismissal as simply going about his normal business. “When it’s a sweep you think they might fall over and I just saw he lifted his foot and nicked [the bails] off,” he said.

'We've lost most games on Powerplay battles' – R Ashwin

Injuries to key players, the ineffectiveness of their overseas fast bowlers, and an inability to win key moments in the Powerplay overs were the reasons behind Kings XI Punjab’s failure to qualify for the IPL playoffs, their captain R Ashwin has said.Speaking to the media after Kings XI’s eight-wicket defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders, Ashwin said injuries – Varun Chakravarthy (finger) and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman (shoulder) missed large parts of the tournament – forced Kings XI to look beyond plans developed ahead of the auction, but maintained that the reasons for not qualifying this season were poor Powerplay performances across the tournament.”Yes, we haven’t been up to the ball-mark this year,” Ashwin said. “We had a few challenges going into this year from last year, we had a few options, we picked up a few people [at the auction] and they’ve got injured. So that’s not ideally how we’d like to look at it. We definitely put our best team we could in the park and we’ve tried our best and there have been a lot of positives that have come out of this season.”One of the areas we’ve definitely lacked is the Powerplay, both with the ball and the bat – in hindsight if we look at it. Because last year we had a great Powerplay batting with Chris [Gayle] and KL [Rahul] but this year we couldn’t get off to great starts obviously because the pressure was on them and they had to do a job. But we have to address this going into the next year because we’ve lost most games on Powerplay battles.”Ashwin also said Kings XI were banking on Andrew Tye, the Purple cap winner from IPL 2018, to come good this season too, but admitted that the Australian wasn’t “very good this season”. Tye took just three wickets in five outings and returned an economy rate of more than 10 per over, but Ashwin expected the fast bowler to learn from the experience.”When you have your overseas seamers and overseas bowlers, you definitely bank on them,” Ashwin said. “It’s like some sort of a banking over. But like I said, Powerplay has been one of our massive problems, most games we’ve won is through the middle overs or sometimes at the death where we’ve had some incredible performances by [Mohammed] Shami or Sam [Curran].”In hindsight, bowlers go through such phases. AJ [Tye] had a fantastic IPL last year but it’s also about batsmen coming after him in different methods. He’s definitely tried hard. It’s not lack of efforts that he’s not been very good this year. But I’m sure he will definitely get better as a cricketer, he’s quite a smart cricketer, he tries to give everything on the field. These sort of phases are quite common in a cricket career but I’m sure he will learn from this.”
