Worse than Gordon: Newcastle star who lost the ball 13x let his team down

Newcastle United would have left the Goodison Park pitch at the end of Saturday’s early evening kick-off frustrated with how the contest played out, as that decisive goal to win the Premier League clash constantly eluded them.

It’s not as if Everton couldn’t have snatched the three points either, as Sean Dyche’s men amassed eight shots on Nick Pope’s goal, but the clash would end as a drab 0-0 stalemate come the full-time whistle.

Of course, former Toffee Anthony Gordon could have made that different for the away side if he had managed to convert a first-half penalty past Jordan Pickford.

Gordon's performance in numbers

Pickford once again came up trumps for the Merseysiders in-between the sticks, denying Gordon’s weak spot-kick to send Goodison Park into raptures, as their former academy product fluffed his lines.

It would have been a frustrating afternoon in truth for the England international, who was jeered throughout whenever he attempted to make something happen for Eddie Howe’s side after he jumped ship to the Magpies without hesitation last year to bring his long-standing Toffees association to a close.

The roar of the home faithful didn’t see Gordon completely recede into his shell, however, with the slick 23-year-old nearly winning the tight contest late on, only for him to blaze a golden chance over the bar with nine minutes left on the clock.

Gordon just couldn’t add to his two-goal tally for the campaign, as the visitors from Tyneside had to make do with a share of the points due to some wasteful finishing from their forward players.

The 23-year-old was not the only culprit for Howe’s visitors, as Harvey Barnes also looked low on confidence when advancing forward for this team.

Harvey Barnes' performance in numbers

Barnes wouldn’t even register a single effort on Pickford’s busy goal during the 0-0 draw, with Gordon at least adventurous enough to test out his former side with some shots to try and hand his current employers a win.

Unsuccessful with both of his dribble attempts during the draw too, the former Leicester City man was nowhere near his rampaging best, with Howe then substituting off his below-par number 11 just after the hour mark.

Alongside his weak showing in front of goal, Barnes also squandered possession a costly 13 times for his side and made just 18 accurate passes in the process, leading to Howe rightly hooking him off.

It was an uncharacteristically quiet display from the usually bright Newcastle number 11, who had three strikes and one assist next to his name this season in the top flight, before heading into this clash versus a side loitering near the bottom of the Premier League.

No such away day heroics like this sumptuous goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers from last month were on show, however.

Indeed, Barnes had to make do with a lacklustre 5/10 rating post-match from Newcastle World writer Jordan Cronin instead, who stated that the ex-Foxes winger would have been ‘disappointed’ with how little he threatened Dyche’s men.

Barnes will hope he can dust himself down and go again afresh when the Magpies face off against Brighton and Hove Albion after the international break, with Gordon also potentially re-energised and raring to go after his unwelcome trip back to Merseyside.

Scotland come in with momentum, but Bangladesh enjoying their best phase in T20Is

Scotland won their two warm-ups, Bangladesh have series win over New Zealand and Australia to their credit in the near past

Mohammad Isam16-Oct-2021Big PictureThere’s very little history between Bangladesh and Scotland, but going by the lead up to this tournament, Scotland will come in buoyed. In the warm-ups, Scotland registered wins in a high-scorer against Namibia and in a low-scorer against Netherlands, while Bangladesh were downed by Sri Lanka and Ireland. That said, Bangladesh have T20I series wins over Australia and New Zealand, from the last three months, to draw confidence from. Together with their 2-1 win over Zimbabwe in July, they are enjoying their best period as a T20I team, and they will want to translate that into a big T20 World Cup campaign. Scotland, and then PNG and Oman, stand in their way to begin. The reliable trio of captain Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan – the latter hopped over to Muscat overnight after the IPL final in Dubai – will have a big say in Bangladesh’s progress. But the likes of Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Mustafizur Rahman have also been on the international stage long enough to be expected to get them big wins. Then there’s Mohammad Naim, a developing white-ball opener, while Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan are the type of big-hitting finishers that this batting line-up has been missing previously. They also have allrounders Mahedi Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin who are exciting talents.Related

Bangladesh will face a Scotland side that has had a mixed bag in T20Is of late, with three defeats in their last five T20Is, including a home series loss to Zimbabwe in September, but, given their results in the warm-ups, head coach Shane Burger believes his side is peaking at the right time.Experienced batters like Richie Berrington, Kyle Coetzer, George Munsey and Calum MacLeod, of course, have crucial roles to play. Alasdair Evans and Safyaan Sharif will head the fast bowling attack, while legspinner Chris Greaves, who took a four-wicket haul against the Netherlands, could surprise Bangladesh given his ability to spin the ball both ways.Of course, on this big stage, nerves also play a big part. Aston Villa tracking "brilliant" £45,000-p/w Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo

Aston Villa are now set to rival fellow Premier League teams in the race to sign a “brilliant” forward, according to a recent report. The Midlands side were very busy during the summer months, and given recent speculation, it looks as though 2025 could be busy for transfers as well.

Aston Villa plotting £29m swoop on rising star whose club are open to sale

Aston Villa are fighting some of Europe’s biggest teams to land the signature of a talented playmaker.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 21, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

In the past week or so, Unai Emery’s side have been linked with a handful of players who could be in line for a move to Villa Park. Bologna striker Santiago Castro has emerged on Villa’s radar in recent days, but they are not the only Premier League team interested in the player.

Meanwhile, midfield looks to be an area that Emery and the Villa board are looking to strengthen. The Villans have now joined the race to sign Angel Gomes when he leaves Lille at what looks likely to be at the end of this season, as he nears the end of his contract.

Aston Villa transfer target Oscar Gloukh in Champions League action for RB Salzburg.

Gomes, who is now a full England international, is not the only playmaker the club is looking at, as Villa also have their eye on Oscar Gloukh but face competition from Newcastle United and Arsenal to sign the Red Bull Salzburg star. The Austrian side is open to selling the player for the right price, which is around 35 million euros, and Gloukh is also interested in a move to the Premier League.

The transfer news doesn’t end there for Villa, as the Midlands side have their eye on a player who is already well familiar with the Premier League.

Aston Villa now tracking a "brilliant" Mbeumo

According to TBR Football, Aston Villa have now joined the race to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo, who has been labelled as “brilliant” by his manager, Thomas Frank, also has interest from teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United.

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo

All these clubs have been keeping an eye on the star who earns £45,000 a week at Brentford, and now Villa’s recruitment hierarchy, led by Monchi, want to join the fray. The 25-year-old has been with the Bees since August 2019, and his importance has continued to grow and grow as the seasons have gone on.

Mbeumo is really excelling in a Brentford shirt, so much so that FBRef’s statistical comparison tool lists Real Madrid’s Rodrygo as fourth on the list of similar forwards to the 25-year-old. Mbeumo has played 209 times for the Bees in his five years at the club, scoring 56 goals and assisting 42.

Bournemouth in the Champions League! Cherries plot new stadium as part of European 'dream' – with Andoni Iraola leading push

Bournemouth have ambitious plans to double the size of the Vitality Stadium, currently the smallest in the Premier League.

Bournemouth targeting new stadiumCheries at centre of multi-club modelChampions League is ultimate ambitionFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Cherries can only fit 11,500 fans inside the Vitality Stadium, trailing far behind Brentford's 17,250-capacity home, and with no others in the Premier League smaller than 24,500. But American owner Bill Foley has revealed intentions to build a new stadium on the existing site that will raise the capacity to at least 19,000 and potentially up to 23,000. That alone should see Bournemouth's revenues shoot up as they aim to shed their status as Premier League minnows and underdogs.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It all forms part of a wider strategy for 80-year-old American billionaire Foley. He is no stranger to building sports teams up, with his Vegas Golden Knights going from new franchise startups to NHL champions in the space of jut six years. His Black Knight Sports & Entertainment group took over Bournmeouth in December 2022, while he also owns or holds stakes in Auckland FC, Lorient and Hibernian, with the intention that Bournemouth will be the flagship side in a multi-club model. Andoni Iraola's Cherries are the blueprint in terms of philosophy and style, on the cusp of qualifying for European football for the first time in their history – they are seventh in the Premier League, but only one point behind Manchester City in the last Champions League berth.

WHAT BILL FOLEY SAID

Speaking to , Foley said: "We have a waiting list of 15,000 or 16,000 people that want tickets, so we're not going to have trouble filling the stadium.

"We're a little ahead of schedule. I thought we'd be in Europe next year [2026]. We may have a chance this year if we can keep on going and keep on playing well. If we just get lucky on injuries and get these guys healthy the second half of the season, we should be very successful, and if we're successful we will play in Europe. The Champions League? That's my dream."

The Vitality Stadium doesn't actually meet UEFA requirements in its current form, so no European football could be played there anyway, unless upgrades to its infrastructure are carried it out to tick UEFA Category 4 criteria. Its size would not be the issue.

Man Utd spotted scouting Kvaratskhelia but left wowed by second Napoli star

Manchester United officials were spotted in attendance watching Napoli take on Empoli last weekend as they were scouting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but were left impressed by another star on the day, according to a new report. The Red Devils added five new players to their squad over the summer, but given how the season has started for them, they may already have their eye on what business they can conduct when the New Year arrives.

"I’ve heard" – Expert says 46 y/o is tempted to replace Ten Hag at Man Utd

INEOS are big fans of his style.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 23, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

In the five players that were brought in during the summer, two were centre backs in the form of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, but it appears as though United still feel more is needed in that area of the team. The Premier League side remain interested in signing Ronald Araujo from Barcelona.

The Red Devils have been linked with the centre-back before, and they have been keeping an eye on his situation as his contract ends in 2026. Barça are looking to tie him down to a new contract, as he is considered a key player, but if talks don’t advance, United are ready to pounce.

As United eye Araujo, they could potentially lose a centre-back, as Harry Maguire is waiting to see if Erik ten Hag is sacked before deciding on his future. The England international is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, and given he hasn’t featured much this season, he is now willing to wait to see what happens in the dugout before making his next move. Talks over a new deal have not taken place between the player and the club.

So, signing yet another centre-back may be on the agenda for United, and while Araujo is an option, they may also have another player in mind after a recent scouting mission.

Man Utd spotted scouting Napoli duo

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Manchester United had an official in place to watch Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Alessandro Buongiorno in their recent game against Empoli. The officials were there to take in Kvaratskhelia in particular, but left impressed instead by Buongiorno.

The 25-year-old only joined Napoli in the summer transfer window from Torino after spending all of his early part of his career with the Turin outfit. Buongiorno is already considered a key player under Antonio Conte, and his performances have now caught the attention of United.

Kvaratskhelia scored the only goal of the game against Empoli, but according to this report, Buongiorno’s first-half performance caught the eye of the United scouts. The centre-back signed a contract until the summer of 2029 however, and it is believed that an offer of around £70 million would need to arrive for Napoli to even consider selling the player.

Langer says Australia will be flexible in selections depending on conditions, opposition, match-ups

Head coach also shows faith and confidence in Finch and Warner after Saturday’s performance

Australia look set to be flexible and adaptable with their selections in the T20 World Cup after coach and selector-on-duty Justin Langer admitted the decision to leave Ashton Agar and Kane Richardson out of the side against South Africa on Saturday was a very difficult one.Australia scraped through their opening encounter after an outstanding bowling performance and some critical cameos with the bat from Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade. They made a bold decision to leave out both Agar and Richardson, who had been automatic selections for most of the last two years in a five-man attack, with Agar currently the highest-ranked Australian at No. 6 on the ICC T20I bowling rankings.Related

But Australia opted for four specialist bowlers only with Glenn Maxwell as the fifth bowler. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins played together for the first time in a T20I despite the slow nature of the Abu Dhabi surface, with the plan working to perfection.”It was a very, very difficult selection,” Langer said. “But because we went for the 7-4 set-up rather than the 6-5, and we felt that we were very well planned against South Africa, we knew that we wanted to try and make an impact in the powerplay overs, in the first six overs, we’ve seen that through the IPL. And we also knew the strength of South Africa upfront so, and thankfully it worked yesterday.”I can’t emphasise enough how tough it was on Ashton Agar, his numbers are literally outstanding. Tough on Ash and really tough on Kane Richardson who’s probably, arguably our best death bowler, or a very good bowler in these conditions so it’s nice to have those selection headaches.”Langer said the players are well aware that team selection will be dictated by the conditions as they had done in the 50-over World Cup in England in 2019.”We’ve said from day one to the players and we did it in the last World Cup, we did it to a degree in the last Ashes in England, that we’ll just look at the conditions, we’ll look at the opposition, we’ll look at the match-ups, and we’ll make the call that we think is right for the team,” Langer said. “It doesn’t always work out that way, but with all the information we’ve got, we’ll work through that.”One area where Australia are unlikely to make any changes is their opening partnership despite both Aaron Finch and David Warner struggling for form and runs. Both missed out against South Africa but Langer was confident his two most experienced openers would come good sooner rather than later.”There’s some really good signs from Davey yesterday,” Langer said. “I think he pulled Rabada for four, he played a beautiful cover drive, he played a great cut shot, and then one held up on him a bit. But they’re good signs for me.”He’s in as good physical shape as I’ve ever seen him so that’s a very positive sign, [I’m] really confident he’ll come good.”And Finchy, I thought one, Finchy’s captaincy was brilliant yesterday. And he’s another one that, he had knee surgery, it might take a little bit of time for him to get moving. He’s working hard in the nets in his preparation. I don’t think it’s so much a mental thing for Finchy. I think it’s just getting back into some rhythm, getting used to his leg feeling good again.”They have been and are a world-class opening partnership and I honestly believe when those two get going, that’s going to set us up for real success in this tournament.”Langer admitted he had nearly chewed his fingernails down to the quick in Saturday’s last-over thriller. But he expects more close low-scoring games as the tournament moves on.”We’re going to have to get ready for it, there’s going to be some very, very close games I think,” Langer said. “It’s usually what happens on these sorts of wickets.”We go to Dubai today; our next game is in Dubai. West Indies were bowled out for 55 I think yesterday in those conditions. We’ll work it out and hopefully we’ll get it right more often than not.”Australia face Sri Lanka in Dubai on Thursday.

West Brom gem who Corberan thinks will be class could now leave in January

Rewind to just shy of three weeks ago and West Bromwich Albion were top of the Championship, undefeated in their first six games and looking firmly on course to a Premier League return after a four-season hiatus. Now, while not exactly in a crisis, the Baggies are without a win in three and have slipped down to fourth.

In their last three games, Carlos Corberan’s side have suffered defeats at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough and most recently were held to a scoreless draw with Millwall.

West Brom thought they had the new Lukaku, now he's worth £6m less

West Bromwich Albion really haven’t got their money’s worth with this signing.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 10, 2024

“We have to manage this situation,” Corberan said after the loss to Boro. “Every game and every defeat has a message for us, detailing things we did well and things we need to improve.” “We need to get these messages from every game to be able to move on and prepare for the next one.”

After the draw with Mlilwall, Corberan said: “The fact we now have an international break is a perfect period for us to find improvements in the squad, even though we know we will be missing some players who will be away. We are going to work and keep growing as a team.”

Harry Whitwell impressing

Talking of growing the team, one player that Corberan is very excited about is young midfielder Harry Whitwell. Whitwell, 18, has been the star player for Richard Beale’s U-21 side this term. Last month, he netted five goals in three games and earned a nomination for the Premier League 2 player of the month for September.

As a result of his good form, not only is the England U-18 international now training with West Brom’s first-team, he’s also on the radar of higher England age groups, according to the Express & Star.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Speaking about Whitwell, who turns 19 next month, Corberan said he’s delighted with the teenager’s development: “I knew he had a lot of potential. But the level he is maturing as a player, every time he plays with us, every time I watch him, I feel more pleased about how he is performing and growing.”

The youngster could soon leave

Despite being impressed with Whitwell, Corberan may soon let him leave The Hawthorns, albeit not permanently.

“He is a player you can think of two possibilities. He is still a young player. He can make the full year here, progressing how he is, or think about the loan if something appears or we find something we consider is his next step,” Corberan explained to Express & Star.

Any decision on Whitwell’s future, however, won’t be made right now: “These decisions in this time right now? It’s not the moment. These decisions need to start at the end of November and beginning of December, according to how he is progressing, and more things.”

Chelsea ace who was sold for £3m could become a star for Tuchel’s England

Previous Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel is set to become the new England manager, following Gareth Southgate who managed the Three Lions between 2016-2024.

In his time at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel managed 100 games, winning 63 times, drawing 19 times, and losing 18 times. His points per match came to 2.08, scoring 197 goals and conceding 105 over this time frame.

The German has a variety of ways he could set up with England, having had great success in a back three for the Blues, but also opting for back four formations with the likes of PSG and Bayern Munich, where he won domestic league titles for both.

English Chelsea players Tuchel managed

During his time at Chelsea between 2021-2022, Tuchel managed multiple other English talents, including Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount, and Raheem Sterling.

Gallagher is the only name of those above who has found himself frequently in the England squad in recent times, with Chilwell and James struggling from injury issues, and the likes of Sterling and Mount struggling for form.

Mount could be an interesting case for Tuchel if he gets back to full fitness, something he has struggled to do at Manchester United. The 25-year-old made 195 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 33 goals, providing 35 assists, and totalling 13,959 minutes played.

He was a favourite with the German, largely for his off-ball work rate, and ability to play in more of a hybrid role, playing as an inside forward who could operate in both the half spaces and out wide.

Of course, another player on that list who still plays for the Blues would be captain James, who would also be extremely likely to feature for the Three Lions under Tuchel if he could get back to full fitness. His ability to play as both a right-sided centre-back in a back three, as a right-wing back, or as a nominal right-back in a back four, would give Tuchel that tactical versatility he desires.

Loftus-Cheek was another example of a player used in that swiss-army knife fashion under the new England boss, as the central midfielder was often deployed as a right-wing back under the German, even making an appearance as one of the central defenders in a back three.

The main thing to takeaway from this is that Tuchel will want versatility from his players, and part of his squad selection will probably be determined by having multiple swiss-army knives at his disposal, allowing him to make those changes in-game to stay on top of things.

One player who played under Tuchel at Chelsea who could find a role for himself in this new-look Three Lions side, is Callum Hudson-Odoi, who played as a wingback and a forward for the former Bayern Munich coach in his time at Chelsea.

Hudson-Odoi under Tuchel at Chelsea

Hudson-Odoi came through the Chelsea academy, making his senior debut in January 2018. He went on to make 126 appearances for the Blues, scoring 16 goals and providing 21 assists while totalling 6,449 minutes played.

Under Tuchel, Hudson-Odoi was deployed in a variety of roles, playing both the left and right inside forward, as a left and right-wing back, and even as a centre-forward in one game.

This tactical variety that the youngster gave his side was part of the reason he was heavily utilised by the German, totalling 1,876 minutes that season, despite only starting 21 games.

You can see by the metrics the transformation of Hudson-Odoi under Tuchel, with his output going down, his progressive numbers falling, but his key passes, shot-creating actions, and successful take-ons going up. Much of this has to do with the role change, playing as more of a wing-back.

In this role, the current Nottingham Forest ace was expected to contribute to both phases of play, tracking back defensively, but also providing width when in possession, stretching the pitch high and wide, and providing the team with an outlet.

This would allow him to find 1v1 situations to take on his man, create shots for himself and others, and play more key passes, often playing clipped passes towards the back post.

The 23-year-old has now moved on to Forest, joining them in 2023 for just £3m. Since then, Hudson-Odoi has made 42 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals, providing two assists, and totalling 2,695 minutes.

How Tuchel could set up at England

There are two ways Tuchel is expected to set up with this England side, one of those being a more common 4-2-3-1 shape, something used by Southgate already for England, and the other being what many saw at Chelsea, with his 3-4-3 shape.

The Three Lions clearly have the personnel to play either of these formations, with someone like Saka being an option for right-wing in a back four, but also a left-wing back in a back five, which could see him highly favoured by the German if we are going of off previous examples.

The new manager will also have plenty of selection headaches, one of the main ones being Cole Palmer or Phil Foden as a number ten, and whether to play Jude Bellingham deeper in midfield to accommodate for one of these other talents.

But if Tuchel’s previous jobs are anything to go by, we can expect plenty of versatility, good usage of all the tools at his disposal, and maybe even some new roles for players we haven’t seen yet. Either way, it’s going to be exciting to find out.
