KKR go top of the table after commanding Narine-led win over LSG

Sunil Narine crashed 81 off 39 deliveries and Ramandeep Singh got only six balls to face and smashed 25 in those. In addition, Phil Salt, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Shreyas Iyer played aggressive innings. All of which meant that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) surged to 235 for 6 in their 20 overs, which in Lucknow – one of the lower-scoring venues in IPL 2024 – was always going to be incredibly difficult to surpass. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) innings didn’t really take off. There was a 50-run second-wicket partnership between KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis, but even that went at too slow a pace (they took 33 balls) to cause serious problems for KKR. Once that stand was broken, the innings fell apart quickly, the last nine wickets falling for 67 runs, as the required rate ballooned out of control.Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana took three wickets each. Andre Russell took two. And Ramandeep claimed two catches, the first of which was one of the most spectacular of the season.Sunil Narine brought up his fifty in 27 balls•BCCI

Narine crushes it in the first 12 overs

Salt was the first aggressor, hitting 24 off the first nine balls he faced. But he was soon out for 32 off 14, and from then, it was the Narine show.Narine warmed up with five fours, then started getting the big hits going at the end of the fourth over, bludgeoning a Mohsin Khan short ball over deep square-leg, clubbing Krunal Pandya over deep midwicket not long after, and later thrashing Yash Thakur over the square-leg boundary. In the middle overs, he dealt almost exclusively in sixes, and by the end of his stay, he had walloped seven, to go with six fours. He holed out to long-off attempting another six off LSG’s best bowler Ravi Bishnoi, who was the only one to finish with an economy rate lower than 11.Ramandeep Singh celebrates after taking a back-tracking blinder•BCCI

Ramandeep plays a cameo to remember

LSG had a good period between overs 14 and 18, where they conceded only 45 while taking three wickets. Thanks to Narine, Salt and Raghuvanshi, with whom Narine shared a 79-run partnership, KKR were headed for a mammoth score. But the slight slowdown might have given LSG a foot in the door.Ramandeep pushed the total back into gargantuan territory in spectacular style. He took a two in front of square on the leg side to start with, bashed a six over cow corner second ball, bludgeoned one over long-on fourth ball, ramped a four over short third next, then thumped a full toss over midwicket to finish the innings. To recap, he went 2, 6, 1, 6, 4, 6.As if scoring at a strike rate of more than 400 wasn’t impressive enough, he also pulled off one of the catches of the season to get rid of Arshin Kulkarni. Speeding towards the boundary from point, he kept his eyes on a leading edge that had gone high into the air, and put in a spectacular dive to get his hands on a ball whose trajectory he did not seem like he would intersect. He took another catch at deep point later, to dismiss Rahul, the other LSG opener.Harshit Rana, on return from disciplinary suspension, sent back KL Rahul on his way to a three-for•Associated Press

And then LSG crumble

With a required rate of almost 12 set from the start of the innings, LSG were always going to struggle, given the quality in KKR’s attack. They scored 13 off the fourth over, bowled by Mitchell Starc, but then Narine came in with a four-run fifth over, and by the end of the powerplay, the required rate was up near 13.When LSG tried to hit out, wickets fell rapidly. At no point did they seem to have the measure of this chase. On a slow track, on which KKR’s slower bowlers were effective, Rahul’s wicket set off a collapse.

Hasan Ali gives Bears bite as Durham batting woes continue

Home side blown away for 101 as Birmingham get campaign started with comfortable win

A brilliant bowling performance from Birmingham Bears gave them a win in their Vitality Blast opener as they beat Durham by seven wickets at the Seat Unique Riverside. Hasan Ali and Richard Gleeson led the attack with exceptional performances as the experienced seamers picked up five wickets between them and helped restrict the hosts to 101 all out.The visitors led by Rob Yates and Sam Hain chased down the target with minimum fuss and won with plenty of time to spare. It was a case of different day, same problems for Durham with this game coming hot on the heels of another poor batting performance at Lancashire on Thursday. The North East side have scored just 176 runs in their two matches so far and will look to improve that when they face Leicestershire Foxes next Friday, while there’s a quick turnaround for Birmingham as they host Notts Outlaws on Saturday.Having been put into bat by Bears, Durham got off to a flier with Alex Lees and Graham Clark scoring 25 from the first two overs. Clark’s positive start didn’t continue for much longer with Dan Mousley removing the opener for 14.Lees then followed his opening partner into the pavilion with the Durham skipper being stumped for 14 after coming down the pitch to Danny Briggs. Colin Ackermann then miscued the ball straight to backward point for one after being deceived by a slower ball from Pakistan international Hasan.Ollie Robinson skied one from Hasan straight to the man at the square leg boundary to depart for 6. And the wickets kept on coming as Ben Raine clipped a George Garton ball into the air and it was met by a diving Yates who took a sublime catch.Ashton Turner and Michael Jones did offer some brief resistance but the Australian was then bowled by the impressive Briggs for 17. Jake Lintott then got in on the act and bowled Durham’s Australian overseas signing Ben Dwarshuis for 2.At the other end Scottish international Jones stuck to the task alongside Matthew Potts, with the batsman hitting Hasan for the first six of the night with a heave to the square-leg boundary.Jones’ defiance ended on 29 as he smashed a Gleeson ball straight to the safe hands of Lintott, then the next ball saw the end of Nathan Sowter for a golden duck. The impeccable Hasan then bowled Potts for 7, giving him figures of 3 for 20 and Durham were all out for 101.The Bears reply almost got off to a bad start as Yates edged a Dwarshuis delivery but it escaped the diving Turner at slip. Alex Davies then turned on the style as he ramped a Dwarshuis ball for six, the first of the Bears innings.Yates chipped away at the target as he hit Callum Parkinson for three fours but the left-arm spinner got his revenge and bowled the opener for 29.Davies was then run out for 13 as Raine hit the stumps while the Bears skipper was backing up and he was short of his ground.Raine was in the thick of the action once again as he got Mousley lbw for 8 to give the Bears a slight scare. Jacob Bethell was removed by Potts for 18, but Hain, who finished unbeaten on 27, anchored the chase and saw his side home comfortably.

'He can say whatever he wants' – Barcelona star applauds as ex-Betis player has transfer to third tier side cancelled FOUR HOURS after confirming move due to anti-Catalan statements

Barcelona's Marc Casado applauded Gimnastic de Tarragona for cancelling Jose Manuel Calderon's transfer after his anti-Catalan remarks came to light.

The 25-year-old defender had joined Gimnastic from Cordoba, but the deal lasted only four hours as the Primera Federacion club swiftly annulled it after severe backlash from fans. Notably, Calderon had made some anti-Catalan statements after securing promotion with Cordoba to the Second Division. The incident occurred last year after the qualifying round of play-off between the Andalusian team and Barca Atletic.

"I sh*t on all dead Catalans," the left-back said in a live broadcast on his Instagram account. He later apologised, saying: "I apologise to all the people of Barcelona and all Catalans for my actions during this afternoon's live stream."

Barca midfielder Casado, who clashed with Calderon during that playoff tie, publicly welcomed Nastic's decision, which earned him more praise from La Liga fans.

The 21-year-old midfielder reacted to Nastic’s announcement reversing Calderon’s signing by leaving an applause emoji in the comments section. His comment has garnered over 2k likes.

Casado’s social media reaction comes while his own future at Barcelona is under discussion. Despite speculation and Atletico Madrid interest, Casado is determined to break into the first team and has no desire to leave the club he grew up in.

For Calderon, the fallout from his comments has proven costly, and it remains to be seen where and when his next opportunity will come.

"Everyone talked with Leo, we’re always present. We rely on how Leo feels, and it wasn’t the best. We preferred not to take risks, not to go backward in his recovery, and to play it safe by not having him in the match," Morales said.
