Tottenham: Lilywhites ‘looking to complete a deal’ for Zaniolo

Tottenham Hotspur are still ‘looking to complete a deal’ for Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo despite his newly dislocated shoulder, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites set for late flurry?

Lilywhites head coach Antonio Conte has seen a plethora of new arrivals make their way to north London as he gears up for a hectic and crucial 2022/2023 Premier League campaign.

Spurs are set to compete in the Champions League for the first time since 2020, strengthening their options as a result with Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence joining the first team.

Sporting director Fabio Paratici has also signed Italy Under-21 starlet Destiny Udogie with the left-wing-back re-joining Udinese on loan for the season.

According to reports, Udogie’s signing may not be the only remaining incoming from Serie A as news emerges on Zaniolo.

The Latest: Tottenham ‘looking to complete a deal’ for Zaniolo…

Indeed, it is believed that the 23-year-old remains of interest to Spurs regardless of his recent shoulder injury.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-3/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

90min claim the N17 side are ‘looking to complete a deal’ for Zaniolo before September 1 with the Italy international ‘greatly admired’ by both Conte and Paratici.

Tottenham apparently see Zaniolo as capable of playing wing-back and Roma are open to selling if their €50 million (£42m) asking price is met.

The Verdict: Make the move?

The attacker could reportedly be out for around a month with his new knock, but going by his potential and talent, four weeks is worth the wait if Spurs can get him through the door before deadline day.

Called ‘special’ by Federico Balzaretti and a ‘exciting’ signing by former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson, his WhoScored stats back this up, with Zaniolo completing more successful take-ons and attracting more fouls per 90 than any Roma player last season.

West Brom dealt Daryl Dike injury blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt an injury blow involving striker Daryl Dike.

What’s the news?

The Athletic’s West Brom journalist Elias Burke relayed comments made by Steve Bruce to Sky Sports on Monday night after the Baggies’ 1-1 draw against Watford.

Burke said (via Twitter): “Bruce on Sky: “Dike, unfortunately, has hurt his thigh in training yesterday. We’ll not know the extent until tomorrow, but it doesn’t look good” #WBA”

Dike joined Albion from Orlando City in January in a deal worth a reported fee of around £7m. After making just two appearances for the Baggies, the forward was struck with a hamstring injury which ended up keeping him sidelined for the remainder of last season.

Big blow for Bruce

This season saw the 22-year-old make a 12-minute cameo in West Brom’s opening game against Middlesbrough before missing the match against Watford due to this latest injury.

Now that Bruce has shared this latest news surrounding the centre-forward, it will surely be a massive blow for everyone connected to the club who was hoping to see Dike begin to make a name for himself at The Hawthorns.

Bearing in mind how, after the American picked up his first injury since joining the club, the Baggies brought in Andy Carroll as a temporary replacement, it will be intriguing to see whether or not they do the same again before the summer transfer window ends.

Taking into account how Albion have now drawn their two opening Championship games of the season, it’s safe to say that they could potentially do with adding some extra firepower to their squad, especially if Dike is likely to spend a significant amount of time ruled out of action again.

On the subject of potential reinforcements after his comments about Dike’s injury, Bruce said that “we’ll see what we can do”, which suggests that there still could be some business taking place before transfer deadline day.

Everyone at West Brom will undoubtedly be hoping that the American will not be out of action for too long and that the club can act swiftly if they do look to bring another striker in before the transfer window closes.

Leeds enter Renyer transfer talks

Leeds United have reportedly entered negotiations with Brazilian club Santos over a move for teenager Renyer.

The Lowdown: Renyer profiled

Renyer has recently turned 19 and is primarily a right-winger but can play anywhere across the front three and has been described as a ‘wonderkid’ by scout and Santos devotee Andre Noruega.

Sponsored by Puma, the youngster is valued at £2.25m by Transfermarkt and is under contract with Santos until November 2023.

He has made just seven senior appearances for his current employers, but it seems as if he is attracting interest from a number of different clubs, including Leeds.

The Latest: Leeds linked with Renyer

Sempre Milan relayed reports regarding Renyer’s future, claiming that AC Milan have been offered the winger in a cut-price deal which could cost just €2m (£1.7m).

Leeds have also been credited with an interest and have entered talks with Santos, with the Whites willing to loan the player back to the Brazilian club for at least another season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-47/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Interesting

Leeds appear to be closing in on English forward Sonny Perkins, and it looks as if Victor Orta is also keen on a move for Renyer.

It could be another coup if they manage to land the Brazilian, especially as he has been linked with the likes of Milan and Benfica, both of whom will be in Champions League action in 2022/23.

Loaning him back to Santos could also be a shrewd idea by Leeds officials, so this could be one to watch closely once a move for Perkins is wrapped up.

West Ham given Gianluca Scamacca boost

West Ham United have been handed a huge boost in their bid to sign Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca.

What’s the word?

That’s according to ExWHUemployee, who, speaking on Friday’s episode of The West Ham Way podcast (via This Is Futbol), had the following to say: “As of this morning we were still talking to Sassuolo regarding the deal for Scamacca. It is felt that Sassuolo hope another club will enter the bidding having seen PSG look like they have moved onto Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike from Stade de Reims. There is a desire to try and get this deal over the line as soon as possible.”

Supporters will be buzzing

With David Moyes already outlining his intentions this summer with several early moves, this one could be the biggest of them all and will leave supporters buzzing.

West Ham have been crying out for a striker who could one day replace Michail Antonio, with plenty of failed experiments along the way.

This young, fresh, free-scoring Italian could be the answer to all their problems, as he would be coming off the back of a remarkable goalscoring season whilst playing for a lacklustre Sassuolo side.

His 16 league goals across 36 games represents a fine return for the 23-year-old, with the fact he managed to play so often instantly makes him more reliable than Antonio.

His injury record has ravaged the Jamaican and left West Ham forcing wingers and midfielders into the number nine spot. A reliable target man is a must, especially given he has just turned 32.

Unsurprisingly, Scamacca earned a very high average SofaScore rating to pair with his fine season in front of goal. He earned a 7.03 rating, which ranks him second amongst his teammates.

Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell was full of praise for the youngster after his performance against England, stating that “one thing I will say is that his link play is brilliant. It is very good and he puts himself about.”

He continued: “If you watch video clips of him he looks decent. He knows where the goal is. It looks as if he will cause a lot of problems.

It is clear that he has all the ability to make the step up to Premier League football, and West Ham supporters can start to get excited at the prospect of a big man with good feet filling the boots of fan favourite Antonio.

Rangers eyeing move for Ross Stewart

Rangers have set their sights on a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos if he leaves the club.

That’s according to The Northern Echo’s chief sports writer Scott Wilson.

The lowdown

Morelos’ contract is due to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season, so as it stands, he would be able to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs from 1 January.

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell wrote recently that the Colombian ‘may be open to prolonging his stay so long as the terms are not prohibitive for Rangers’, although talks between the two parties over an extension are apparently ‘stalling’.

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart, the man named in Wilson’s report as the player who Rangers are targeting as Morelos’ successor, is valued at £450,000 by Transfermarkt and is in the same position with his contract. In another similarity between the two strikers, both are 25 years old.

The latest

Wilson took to Twitter to share the ‘transfer latest’ on Monday morning, posting his corresponding report from The Northern Echo.

Rangers officials are ‘adamant’ that Morelos won’t walk away on a free transfer in 12 months’ time and are duly drawing up possible succession plans in the event that they are compelled to entertain offers for the Colombian this summer.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has assessed a number of options and picked out Stewart as his ‘number one’ target. The Gers are confident that they can ‘trump’ whatever wages Sunderland can offer to the Scotland international.

The verdict

Can Stewart cut it as a replacement for Morelos?

First and foremost, he impressively bagged 26 goals and laid on five assists in 53 appearances for the Black Cats last season.

Encouragingly for Van Bronckhorst, he has also shown he can be a big-game player, having netted in the League One play-off semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday and in the final against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley as Sunderland earned promotion to the Championship.

Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe hailed the 25-year-old as ‘clinical’ after his play-off heroics, while The Times’ Henry Winter dubbed him ‘ruthless’.

Stewart has earned international recognition, too, making his debut for Scotland in their 2-0 win over Armenia last week, and he looks ready to make the step-up at club level if Rangers bring him to Ibrox.

Celtic must secure Ko Itakura transfer

Celtic have a track record when it comes to signing players from English clubs over the years, either on permanent or loan deals.

One club in particular with whom the Hoops have done a significant amount of business is Manchester City.

Over the past 10 years, Celtic have secured deals for the likes of Jason Denayer, Patrick Roberts and Olivier Ntcham, among others, from the Premier League champions.

Another player that the Bhoys brought to Parkhead from the Etihad Stadium is Dedryck Boyata. In 2015, Celtic paid £1.5m to secure the defender on a four-year deal from City.

During his four years in Glasgow, the Belgian made 135 appearances before leaving in 2019 for Hertha Berlin after a reported clash with former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Now that some years have passed, it seems as though the Hoops may have the chance to sign what could be their next version of Boyata, but hopefully without the reported behind-the-scenes issues.

Last month, it was reported that the Bhoys have their eyes on potentially making a move to sign City defender Ko Itakura.

Along with sharing the same connection with the Manchester club that Boyata had, the former Hoops defender is also listed as a similar player to Itakura according to Football Transfers.

The pair also share a knack for being solid defensive units as well. Looking back to the seven matches that Boyata played in Celtic’s 2018/19 Europa League campaign, the centre-back averaged 1.9 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per game.

As for the current City defender, he averaged 1.4 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per league game during his recent loan spell with Schalke.

While these statistics may not be as high as the 31-year-old’s during his period with the Hoops, the Japan international has still shown that he can be a useful figure at the back.

Labelled an “incredibly fast” player by Dutch pundit Hans Kraay Jr., the 25-year-old could still be a useful addition to Celtic’s ranks and give Ange Postecoglou some extra depth in that area of his squad.

This could be crucial for the 56-year-old as his side will be looking to retain the Premiership title and go as far as they can in Europe next time around.

If the Hoops can use their previous connections with City to help forge a deal for the £3.15m-rated dynamo, this could be a great bit of business for all involved.

Aston Villa reach agreement for Diego Carlos

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Sevilla for the transfer of centre-back Diego Carlos, with Sky Sports sharing the development live on air.

The Lowdown: Quick start

NSWE and Steven Gerrard have made a head start on their summer business and have already secured permanent moves for Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates-2/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Villa have turned Coutinho’s loan move into a full-time deal, while Kamara will officially be on the books in the Midlands from July 1 when his Marseille contract expires.

It now looks as if Carlos will be the next to officially sign despite links only first emerging on Wednesday morning.

The Latest: Carlos agreement

Villa confirmed on their official website on Thursday evening that they have reached an agreement with Sevilla for Carlos.

The Brazilian still needs to complete a medical and finalise personal terms though, and Sky Sports shared live on air that Villa are ‘on the verge’ of completing those finer details.

The Verdict: Big

Carlos is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, but it looks as if Villa will pay just £26m for his services in what appears to be another big coup and a huge £14.5m saved.

Gerrard is clearly now at the heart of a major Villa Park rebuild, and it seems as if Carlos will have a big role to play in his first full season. The 29-year-old has bundles of experience at the top level in France and Spain as well as in the Champions League and Europa League.

His arrival could spell trouble for either Ezri Konsa or Tyrone Mings, with their futures thought to be up in the air, so Villa’s focus could soon be on exits before any more signings.

Celtic: Pete O’Rourke drops Jota claim

A big claim has been made on Celtic and their potential deal to sign Jota on a permanent basis…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Ange Postecoglou will be bugging the board to wrap up a move for the Portuguese forward as quickly as possible.

He is currently on loan from Benfica and the reporter does not believe that they will encounter any problems with his contract.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Obviously they have got that option to buy in there, so the fee is all agreed, Celtic just need to stump it up and I’m sure personal terms won’t be an issue.

“Postecoglou will be calling on the Celtic hierarchy to get this deal done so he can start preparing for next season with Jota in his plans.”

Supporters will be buzzing

This update will surely leave the Celtic supporters buzzing for multiple reasons.

Firstly, they will be pleased to read that personal terms will not be an issue. Whilst the transfer fee has already been agreed, the Hoops would not be able to sign him permanently if he was not willing to put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Parkhead.

However, this fresh claim from O’Rourke suggests that he is open to staying in Glasgow beyond the end of the campaign, allaying any fears that he viewed his future elsewhere.

The fans will also be delighted as signing Jota will be a major deal for the club. He has been a huge player for Celtic throughout the campaign and the supporters will surely want to see him in action for Postecoglou next term, with his exciting play out on the wing.

In 27 Premiership outings, the 23-year-old has scored nine goals and provided ten assists. He has created a whopping 15 ‘big chances’ and 2.1 chances per match in the division – showing that he has been able to deliver in the final third on a regular basis in the Scottish top-flight.

He also caught the eye in the Europa League earlier in the season. Jota was directly involved in four goals (two goals and two assists) in five starts in the competition – averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.40. The winger has the quality to make a big impact in Europe and that makes him a key player ahead of a potential Champions League campaign next term.

Fans will, therefore, be buzzing with Postecoglou pushing for this deal to be done as he is a terrific player who can have a major impact on the team next season, just as he has in the current one.

Tactics Board: How India can beat Australia

No two teams have met more often at World Cups, but the results have been one-sided in Australia’s favour. Is there a way for Virat Kohli’s men to change that?

Srinath Sripath and Gaurav Sundararaman08-Jun-2019If India-Pakistan is the over-anticipated clash that has never quite lived up to its billing at World Cups, India-Australia is the story of a world-beating power that has almost always ended the hopes of a nation. Their match on Sunday will be the 12th time they are meeting in World Cups, the most between any two teams. There have been a couple of close shaves, and India will always have Ahmedabad 2011, but the reality is that Australia have an overwhelming 8-3 lead in this contest. they’re on a bit of a hot streak: 10 successive ODI wins, including a hat-trick against India on their own turf. So, how can Virat Kohli and his men reverse these trends – recent and historical?Mitchell Starc v India’s openers could be a key battle at the Oval•ESPNcricinfo LtdWin the toss and chaseThe Oval has been a chasing ground in recent years. As recently as the Champions Trophy 2017, Sri Lanka chased down India’s 321 with relative ease. So, if India win the toss, they should bowl first. It’s a near-straightforward decision, especially with their attack. If there’s any help for the quicks, it should be early on, as was the case during the game against England and South Africa. And teams are known to be steady off the blocks rather than explosive when batting first at the Oval. The average winning total at this ground since World Cup 2015 is around 320, but almost none of that matters, since India are a different side since Champions Trophy 2017, with the two wristspinners in Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. They have been menaces even on high-scoring grounds. But here are the clinchers. India’s chasing record since the last World Cup is next only to England’s (win-loss ratio – 2.13). And Australia have not lost a World Cup match while chasing since 1999.Handling the Starc factor if they bat firstIndia’s openers aren’t the greatest against left-arm seamers, and neither of them have faced Mitchell Starc – currently in red-hot form – since the 2015 World Cup.While Rohit Sharma has found a way to survive against left-armers (average 46, strike rate 89 since the last World Cup) Shikhar Dhawan’s struggles are more obvious. Starc has got Dhawan out twice in the three times they’ve faced off, and Jason Behrendorff, the other left-arm seamer in the Australian squad, has done both of them in the past. This problem isn’t limited to the top two. KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and, in recent times, MS Dhoni too, have had a rough time against the left-arm angle.Kuldeep’s usually the x-factor, but it’s Chahal who’s enjoyed greater success against Australia•ESPNcricinfo Ltd…and keep wickets in handAustralia might be tempted to play Behrendorff, perhaps at the expense of their most recent Player of the Match Nathan Coulter-Nile, who, for all his past success against Kohli and Co, has looked out of touch with the ball.So India’s batsmen have to be careful. A poor start could expose the middle and lower order to Starc and Pat Cummins later on, and the innings could be over before it even begins. That’s just how important the early exchanges in this game could be, especially if India are setting a total.Go after Adam Zampa and the fifth bowler(s)Adam Zampa might claim to have solved the Kohli puzzle, but let’s not forget he’s copped some tap from the Indian captain. Kohli, Hardik and Kedar Jadhav have all gone after him in the past, and had a fair degree of success. The plan on Sunday should be for them to go after him again, and let Dhoni handle the other middle-overs bowler Marcus Stoinis, who has never dismissed him.All of this, of course, depends on the level of difficulty the Indian lower order faces. Dhoni, for instance, had a chance to play out Zampa and take the game deep in middling chases through the three-ODI series in Australia. But, when up against 300-plus totals in the return series at home, that approach backfired, with run-rate pressure resulting in his undoing. Can Finch get past Bhuvneshwar this time around?•ESPNcricinfo LtdDon’t change a winning (bowling) combinationIndia’s wristspin twins are primed to be a force at this World Cup, not least because of the tournament’s format. Unlike bilateral series, teams don’t get two or three chances to get used to it. It’s one and done.Australia, though, have faced them plenty of times over the course of three separate ODI series since Champions Trophy 2017. In addition to that, they also have a couple of wristspinners travelling with them, and Kuldeep might not be as exotic a commodity as he is against other sides. Nevertheless, India should continue to back them. Even more so given Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah’s form early on.

Bhuvneshwar, in particular, is having his best year in ODIs (21 wickets in 11 innings at 22.3) and enjoys a lopsided match-up against Aaron Finch. The Australian captain has struggled against the one that comes back in, and if Bhuvneshwar can exploit that weakness and pick up early wickets, he could make life a lot easier for India. Will Kohli unleash Bumrah and Chahal on Maxwell?Maxwell may be one of the biggest hitters in the Australian line-up but his record against two of India’s strike bowlers needs some setting right. Chahal gets him out roughly, once every 12 balls in ODIs, while Bumrah’s made it a habit of getting him in T20s, once in 14 balls. Should Maxwell come in early, will Kohli bring one of these two on to bowl immediately? History suggests he should.

Murtagh and Stirling at home

Plays of the day from the second one-day international between England and Ireland at Lord’s

Andrew Miller07-May-2017Shot of the dayThe challenge of containing England’s run-hungry batsmen wasn’t lost on Ireland’s senior seamer, Tim Murtagh, who took the first over from the Nursery End and settled into his habitual Lord’s line and length, a beat he’s been keeping for nigh on a decade at Middlesex. But then, with his fourth ball, he overpitched just a touch, and Jason Roy was ready to make him pay. Out came that most sumptuous of straight drives, and a far-from-terrible delivery had been scorched straight back past the stumps for four.Ball of the dayMurtagh, however, couldn’t be put off from doing what he does best, and in a superb opening spell of 6-0-16-1, he probed a fullish length with a bit of nibble off the seam, and demanded respect from England’s openers. And his one breakthrough in that spell was a beauty. Alex Hales, seeing the ball well once again, had just clumped his sixth boundary through the covers, when Murtagh responded by nipping a cutter back up the slope. Hales, shaping for a repeat drive, was in no-man’s land as the ball scudded through his bat and pad to take out middle and leg.Let-off of the dayEoin Morgan had been in a hurry to make his mark on his former team-mates, but the introduction of the lobby offspin of Paul Stirling so nearly brought him to a standstill. On 39, he gave himself room outside leg stump, but got himself in a tangle as Stirling speared the ball into his pads. The ball squeezed a path through his legs, rolled down into the crease and nestled tantalisingly at the base of the stumps. The bails, however, refused to budge, and England’s captain breathed again.Parry of the dayRelay catches are becoming second nature to professional cricket teams all around the world, so there was nothing especially out of the ordinary about George Dockrell’s brave effort on the midwicket boundary, as he stretched high to intercept a hoick across the line from Jonny Bairstow, and fling it back into play once he realised his momentum was toppling back into the Mound Stand. However, the look on his face afterwards told a story. Where was his support? With no-one rushing round to offer him assistance, Dockrell had no option but to settle for a saved six.Cameo of the dayMurtagh had shown the way where local knowledge of Lord’s was concerned; now it was the turn of Ireland’s other Middlesex regular, Paul Stirling. Last week, he warmed up for this contest with 71 from 60 balls in Middlesex’s Royal London clash with Sussex, and today he started with even more explicit intent, smashing five fours from his first eight balls to hurtle to 22 from eight. The pick of his innings was yet to come, however, a lean-back-and-wallop for six as Mark Wood dropped only a fraction too short. As with too many of Stirling’s innings, it wasn’t built to last, but it was certainly fun while it did.
