Charlotte Edwards, the former England women’s captain, has made her first movement into cricket administration by being appointed as Hampshire’s director of women’s cricket.Edwards, who will continue to captain Hampshire Women for a second season this summer, will head up the management of both Hampshire Women’s first-team and player pathway sides, as well as the Southern Vipers – the team she led to the inaugural Kia Super League title in 2016.She takes over the role filled by former Hampshire wicketkeeper Bob Parks, who has announced his retirement after more than 45 years involved in the game.”I’m extremely excited about my new role as director of women’s cricket,” Edwards said. “Having played for Hampshire and Southern Vipers for the past two seasons, I see an ambitious organisation that will complement my passion for domestic cricket. I look forward to working with players, coaches and staff to help Hampshire become one of the leading domestic clubs in the country for women’s cricket.”Edwards, who captained the England Women’s side for more than a decade before retiring in 2015, scored more than 10,000 international runs during her 20-year career. Her career spanned four Ashes series victories, a World T20 title and the 2009 World Cup victory as England captain. In 2014, she was awarded a CBE for her services to cricket.”We’re delighted that Charlotte has agreed to take up the role,” Hampshire’s chief executive officer, David Mann, said. “She’s a legend in the women’s game and has been a superb ambassador for the Vipers both on and off the pitch over the past two seasons.”Her wealth of experience and knowledge of the game will be invaluable assets for our management group and we’re excited by the qualities she brings to the role.”Our thanks must go to Bob Parks who has been an integral part of what the Southern Vipers and Hampshire Women have been able to achieve over the past two seasons and we all wish him well in his retirement.”

USA Cricket announces membership and player selection combine for 2018

The ICC-approved governing body has announced the start of membership sign-up process ahead of its first general elections due in mid-2018

Peter Della Penna20-Feb-2018USA Cricket, the ICC-approved governing body formed in late 2017 to take over cricket administration after USACA’s expulsion from the ICC midway through the year, has announced the start of membership sign-up process ahead of its first general elections due in mid-2018.”This is another significant step forward in making the new national governing body a reality,” said Patricia Whittaker, former West Indies women’s Test player and a member of the ICC’s Sustainable Foundation advisory group that was a forerunner to USA Cricket’s formation. “We are excited to give the cricketing community the opportunity to engage with USA Cricket through the membership program and are certain that the all inclusive and fair approach we are taking will assist the new governing body in achieving the most impact for all involved in cricket in the United States.”Combine dates and locations

According to the USA Cricket website registration forms, there are two membership categories that interested parties can register under. The first is individual, in which players, coaches or fans can sign up. The second is organisational, which is open to clubs, leagues, academies and schools. Both sets of categories are free to join until July 2018, by when the first set of elections are expected to be held ahead of USA Cricket’s first executive board being installed and represent the country at this year’s ICC annual conference. Both categories include voting rights in the inaugural USA Cricket general election. Under the USACA constitution that was approved in 2008 following their second ICC suspension, voting was limited to USACA member leagues, with the league president controlling his group’s vote. This stipulation turned into a major source of contention over the years and played a factor in 32 out of 47 member leagues, many of which voiced opposition to USACA president Gladstone Dainty, being disenfranchised ahead of the 2012 USACA general election.A subsequent landslide victory for Dainty among the 15 remaining voting leagues spurred most of the 32 disenfranchised leagues to break away and form the American Cricket Federation. When both governing bodies claimed to be the rightful group in charge of representing the majority of stakeholders in the country, the ICC finally intervened, leading to USACA’s eventual suspension in 2015 and expulsion last year. The move to open up voting rights to as many members as possible is aimed at curbing any future repeat of the events of the 2012 election.USA Cricket also announced that player selection combines, which were first started by the ICC Americas caretaker administration in Indianapolis in September 2015 and then on an eight-city regional basis in 2016, will return in 2018. Like 2016, they will be held across eight cities or states around the country with combines divided into women’s, junior and senior men’s trial applicants. The only place not to have a repeat combine from 2016 is New Jersey, with the players there expected to be grouped into the trial process for the New York metro area in 2018. In New Jersey’s place, a junior combine has been slated for North Carolina, which has a developed a reputation in recent years for youth cricket initiatives.Previous ICC combines required players to apply themselves. This year’s combines will have players nominated by their leagues – each league can put forward a maximum of four names not currently part of the national team squad – as well as players applying on an individual basis. The deadline for player applications for the first two combines – in North Carolina and San Francisco this March – is February 28 but the application for all other combines is March 9.After the eight regional combine trials are complete, about 30-40 players are expected to be invited to a men’s national team camp in Houston from June 21-24. From there, squads are expected to be picked for USA’s assignments for the rest of 2018. These include the Auty Cup series against Canada, the start of 2020 World T20 qualifying and WCL Division Three. Information about the subsequent national team camp and selection process for women’s and junior players are yet to be announced.”I am hugely enthused by the previous editions of the combines we have conducted and believe this is an important process to ensure a fair, transparent and all-inclusive selection process for our national teams while we work towards the creation of regional performance structures across the country,” ICC Americas USA project manager Eric Parthen said.USA Cricket had previously announced that a national tournament would be scheduled sometime later in 2018. The national tournament is expected to take over for the combine process with USA’s main talent identification pathway going forward.

Afridi hat-trick, Hales blinder light up T10 League's opening day

And in the tournament opener, Ireland’s Paul Stirling smacked an unbeaten 66 to help Kerala Kings chase down a target of 90 with two openers to spare

Kerala Kings won the first match of the T10 League against the Bengal Tigers, but the opening night of the new tournament belonged to Pakhtoons’ Shahid Afridi. He took a hat-trick with the first three balls he bowled in the format as his franchise beat a Maratha Arabians side captained by Virender Sehwag by 25 runs.Sehwag was the third victim of Afridi’s hat-trick, trapped in front by an in-dipping slider. Two balls earlier, Rilee Rossouw had holed out to Afridi’s first ball, caught by a fine diving catch at long on by Najibullah Zadran. Dwayne Bravo was then trapped lbw before Sehwag fell in similar fashion. The format might be a new one, but the sensation felt similar. And has so often been the case over the past two decades, Afridi’s heroics delighted a sizable crowd in Sharjah.Around 11,000 of the 14,500 seats at Sharjah Cricket Stadium were filled over the course of the night. Somehow, despite the newness of the event and the lack of official merchandise stalls in the vicinity, thousands arrived wearing yellow shirts with “10 Afridi” inscribed on the back. This tournament might as well have been created for the Pakistan allrounder. At its launch event in October, Afridi had said: “When [Pakhtoons owner Habib Khan] came to tell me about this, I said, ‘Please, let me play in this format’.”Predictably, Afridi took to it immediately. His mid-innings salvo left Maratha Arabians with no chance of chasing the 122 they needed.”I really enjoyed it, it is totally different,” Afridi said after the game. “The boys did really well.Despite it coming in a losing cause, Alex Hales – on his first outing since the incident outside a Bristol nightclub that led to him and Ben Stokes’ suspension from England duty – found his groove immediately. He was left unbeaten on 57 from 26 balls, which included a six off Afridi that landed on the grandstand roof.”I really loved it, I think it is a great format, full of excitement,” Hales said. “It is a shame we didn’t get over the line today, we just lost wickets at crucial times, and that was probably the difference. You obviously have half the time of T20, and you just have to keep changing gears all the way through your innings.”It was, of course, a step into the unknown for everyone. Pakhtoons’ total of 121 for 4 had proved well beyond the Arabians, and Hales said “between 100 and 130″ would be a good score in 10-over innings in Sharjah.”We have to keep looking to play straight on the wicket,” Hales said. “The main threat is lbw and bowled, so we have to keep playing nice and straight.”Earlier, in the tournament opener, Paul Stirling followed up a century in a series-clinching ODI win against Afghanistan on Sunday with an unbeaten 66 for Kerala Kings. That was out of a total of 90 for 2, as they beat Bengal Tigers by eight wickets, with two of their 10 overs still unused.

Mithun, Agarwal star in Karnataka's bonus-point win

Abhimanyu Mithun’s five-for built on Mayank Agarwal’s triple-century to give Karnataka their third straight win; Hyderabad thump Railways for full points

Medium pacer Abhimanyu Mithun’s 5 for 66 bundled out Maharashtra for 247, as Karnataka romped to a bonus-point win over Maharashtra in Pune. The innings-and-136-run win, Karnataka’s third straight one, didn’t take too long on the fourth day, despite the efforts of Maharashtra batsman Rohit Motwani (49).Resuming from an overnight score of 135 for 4, Maharashtra lost overnight batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad for 65 in the fourth over of the day. The other overnight batsman, Rahul Tripathi, fell soon to Mithun soon after bringing up a rapid half-century. Tripathi was Mithun’s fourth wicket and he completed his five-for with a dismissal in the next over, leaving Karnataka needing three wickets to win. Motwani tried to thwart Karnataka but with the lack of partners and his team’s score meant there was little he could do.After two frustrating washouts and a loss to Karnataka, Hyderabad finally had some reason to cheer, as they thumped Railways by 10 wickets to pocket seven points at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi.Railways, resuming on 13 without loss after being asked to follow-on, collapsed again, slipping after a 54-run opening stand to be reduced to 126 for 6 at lunch. A seventh-wicket stand worth 69 between Manish Rao and Arindamn Ghosh kept them alive for a briefly, before they imploded again.A loose shot outside off stump against the part-time offspin of Rohit Rayudu resulted in Ghosh being out caught behind. Anureet Singh, who made a fifty in the first innings was aggressive, stepping out to hit Rohit for two sixes off successive deliveries. But a change of bowlers at that end, with the introduction of fast bowler Ravi Kiran, saw him glove one behind.Railways managed to erase the deficit, but Manish was left stranded again, this time on 85, as Hyderabad cleaned ended the partnership for the last wicket on 32. Left-arm spinner Mehedi Hasan took 4-35. The visitors chased it down without much fuss.

Sunderland Set To Sign "Strong" £1m Marksman

A major update has emerged on Sunderland's pursuit of another centre-forward option to add to Tony Mowbray's arsenal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest Sunderland transfer news?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Black Cats have agreed a deal with Sochaux to sign Spanish striker Eliezer Mayenda.

The reporter has claimed that the 18-year-old prodigy will sign with the Championship outfit on Friday, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman now on the verge of completing the side's sixth piece of incoming business during the summer transfer window.

It has been reported, by The Telegraph's Mike McGrath, that the club are set to pay a fee within the region of €1.2m (£1m) for his services.

He will join Jenson Seelt, Jobe Bellingham, Bradley Dack, Luis Semedo, and Nectarios Triantis as one of the fresh faces at the Stadium of Light next season.

How many goals did Eliezer Mayenda score last season?

The talented teenager scored one goal in 15 Ligue 2 appearances for his team, which is not an impressive return from the Spanish dynamo at face value.

However, the left-footed prospect only started one match for Sochaux and played 285 minutes in total. This means that he did not get much time on the pitch to make an impact but was still able to net his first professional goal.

Mayenda would arrive as Sunderland's only striker with senior experience under his belt ahead of the opening day clash with Ipswich Town, as Semedo is yet to play a competitive first-team game in his career and Ross Stewart will not be fit in time to feature.

This could result in him being tasked with leading the line against the Tractor Boys and Mowbray could help him out by starting new signing Dack, who arrived on a free transfer on Thursday, alongside him.

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Bradley Dack.

The former Blackburn Rovers magician is an experienced Championship campaigner who could help the teenage ace through the match, whilst also having the quality to strike up an excellent partnership with him.

Dack, who scored seven goals in 34 games last season, racked up 57 goals and 28 assists across 173 outings for his last club and has played 116 second-tier clashes throughout his career.

The 29-year-old has scored nine or more league goals in five seasons at Championship and League One level combined, which suggests that he has the potential to be a huge goal threat for Sunderland, as only Amad Diallo (14) and Stewart (ten) hit double figures last term.

These statistics indicate that Dack could be a dream attacking midfielder to deploy behind Mayenda on the opening day as his experience and quality could ease the pressure off the 18-year-old talent's shoulders.

The Sochaux marksman, who was hailed as "strong" by journalist Josh Bunting, scored three goals in five outings for his current side's B team last season but there is no guarantee that he will be able to translate that form over to senior football in England.

Therefore, playing him in front of a proven Championship performer who knows how to find the back of the net could be the dream scenario for Mayenda. Dack could provide the Spain U17 international with someone to lean and rely on throughout the game, in order to help him settle into life at that level.

Celtic: Rodgers eyeing "one of the biggest deals of the summer"

Celtic being able to initiate a sensational deal to land Scott McTominay this summer would be 'tough to pull off', according to journalist Dean Jones.

What clubs are keen on Scott McTominay?

Last term, McTominay was used primarily as a rotational option by Erik Ten Hag for Manchester United, though he still managed to make 39 appearances in all competitions, registering three goals and one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, the Scotland international could be set to be axed at Old Trafford this summer alongside Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Fred as Dutch coach Ten Hag looks to 'streamline' his squad this season, according to The Independent.

Suitors have emerged for McTominay and Celtic have been named as a potential destination for the £60k-a-week ace, as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their defence of the Scottish Premiership title.

CBS Sports via The Daily Mail report that McTominay is also on the radar of Brighton & Hove Albion and Jose Mourinho's Roma; however, Manchester United's Financial Fair Play restrictions may lead to them keeping hold of the 26-year-old for another year due to the fact they would be unlikely to afford a direct replacement for him.

talkSPORT understand that West Ham United are in the market for a central midfielder and could turn to McTominay as a potential alternative to Declan Rice, who is set for a money-spinning move to Arsenal and looks to have played his last game for the Hammers.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones thinks that McTominay would be a 'mind-blowing' signing for Celtic if they managed to convince him to swap the Premier League for the Scottish Premiership.

Jones stated: "If Celtic could land McTominay, it would be mind-blowing, to be honest. I think it would be one of the biggest deals of the summer.

"It would be huge for Celtic, but it would also be a big decision for McTominay to switch from the Premier League to the Scottish Premiership at this point.

"It would be an incredible get for Celtic if they can pull something like that off, but I think it'll be tough to pull off."

What other players could Celtic and Rodgers sign this window?

Celtic have been slow off the mark this window as boss Rodgers runs the rule over his squad in their pre-season training camp in Portugal; however, some arrivals will be expected in the next few weeks as the Irishman ramps up his market proactivity at the helm of the Scottish champions.

According to Ukrainian outlet Sport Novyny, Celtic are regarded as frontrunners to sign Brazilian winger Tete, who spent the second half of last term on loan at Leicester City. The report adds that he intends to leave his parent club Shakhtar Donetsk due to fears for his safety due to the region's ongoing conflict.

Former Leicester City loanee Tete.

Gangwon midfielder Yang Hyun-jun has been extensively linked to Celtic this window and has stated that there has been "some progress" in the ongoing transfer saga that continues to unfold concerning his potential arrival in Glasgow, as relayed by Football Scotland.

Last month, The Scottish Sun claimed that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney would be open to a blockbuster return to Celtic on a loan basis; however, both parties would need to come to a significant compromise over wages and any fee for the agreement.

Southampton: Martin Could Soften JWP Blow With £4m Leader At St Mary’s

Southampton are expected to lose some key players between now and the end of the transfer window, as long-serving skipper James Ward-Prowse and in-demand pair Romeo Lavia and Tino Livramento continue to be linked with the St Mary's exit.

What players have Southampton sold?

Since finishing bottom of the Premier League, and thus finding themselves in the Championship this coming season, Southampton have sold Mislav Orsic to Trabzonspor and released the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Theo Walcott.

In truth, none of those losses will be majorly felt as the south coast side seek an instant return to the big time, but that could soon change given the speculation surrounding the aforementioned trio of Ward-Prowse, Lavia and Livramento.

There does not seem to be a top-flight side that has not shown an interest in Lavia, with Liverpool now looking well-positioned to sign the defender, while Livramento is supposedly wanted by Chelsea and Newcastle United.

The Saints could raise large sums for both, but it goes beyond money alone when it comes to Ward-Prowse. However, the Daily Mail claims Southampton are in talks with Everton for Mason Holgate, which could go a long way to softening the blow of the club captain departing.

What position does Mason Holgate play?

While Holgate has featured as a holding midfielder at times, he is a centre-back by trade who can occasionally fill in on the right. That means he is not a like-for-like replacement for West Ham United target Ward-Prowse, but Russell Martin is no doubt already on the lookout for a central midfielder.

Instead, Holgate can take over from Ward-Prowse – assuming the fan favourite does indeed move on this summer – in terms of his leadership qualities.

The 26-year-old has previously captained Everton and has been hailed as a "leader" by the Liverpool Echo's Sam Carroll. Southampton still have plenty of quality in their squad, but they lack obvious leaders beyond Ward-Prowse.

As someone who has been on Everton's books since 2015, Holgate is clearly loyal and also a team player, given he has had to be patient for his limited opportunities at Goodison Park.

That is not to mention the other qualities Holgate can bring to Southampton, such as his ability to clear the ball and tackle opponents – arguably the two most important traits for any centre-back.

Holgate ranks in the top 11% of all centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for clearances per 90 minutes (4.97), according to FBref, as well as the top 21% for interceptions per 90 (1.24).

The Doncaster native is also capable of bringing the ball out from the back, ranked as he is in the top 11% for successful take-ons per 90 minutes (0.53).

While it must be factored in that Holgate – valued at around £4m by Football Observatory – only played 508 minutes of Premier League football last season, the numbers show that he stood up when called upon.

If the former England U21 international now has to drop down a tier to play regular football, it may well be that Everton's loss is Southampton's gain.

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at Dambulla

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Mar-2017Match FactsMarch 28, 2017
Start time 1430 local (0900 GMT)Bangladesh won only their second ODI in Sri Lanka to take a lead in the series•AFPBig PictureA win in a landmark Test, post-match calls from the prime minister, outstanding performances from debutants, seniors producing their best work – this hastily arranged tour was only supposed to be the postscript to Bangladesh’s high-profile visits to New Zealand and India, but now has the makings of a dream tour.Consider how dominant Sri Lanka have been against Bangladesh in the past. Muttiah Muralitharan’s record is sometimes attacked for containing too many Bangladesh wickets. Kumar Sangakkara looked bored while hitting half of his hundreds against them. Now, tables are turned, boots have switched feet, and the vanquishers are on the verge of becoming vanquished. Before Saturday, Bangladesh had won only one ODI in 15 attempts in Sri Lanka – and that, too, a rain-affected match that became a little chancy towards the end. Now they have crushed Sri Lanka by 90 runs, have players in form, and have possibly become favourites on an away tour. Not that Sri Lanka balk at the underdog tag. Often it’s when little is expected of them that they are at their most stirring. But in reality, this is a team that have now lost six ODIs in a row, have been defeated in five of their last six home one-dayers, and are operating without their best player – Angelo Mathews.Failed strategies have been curiously persisted with too. Sri Lanka have stacked their XI with allrounders, which seems to routinely leave them a bowler short in the death overs. They seem to constantly try to make limited-overs stars out of promising Test players, who might be better left to develop in one format (20-year-old Lahiru Kumara being a prime example). There is also the fielding, which we won’t go into again, because if you are a Sri Lanka fan, it will only want to make you cry.Form guideSri Lanka LLLLL (completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh WLLLLIn the spotlightIt is time to talk about Thisara Perera – perhaps Sri Lanka’s best batsman of the first ODI, where he hit 55 off 35 balls. Is he a batsman who can bowl a bit? Well, in 18 innings since the start of 2015, he has averaged 14.23 with the bat. Is he then a bowler who bats a bit? This seems even less likely, as since the start of 2015, he averages 54.33 with the ball, and concedes runs at 6.63 an over. His role in the team seems unclear. He has often found ways to be overshadowed in Sri Lanka, but Mehedi Hasan has been consistently effective, and has been a key contributor to Bangladesh’s success through this tour. On ODI debut on Saturday, Mehedi took the new ball – a task only experienced spinners are usually saddled with – and delivered a five-over spell that yielded one wicket and cost only 17, helping sink Sri Lanka’s chase early. Mehedi has also been an enthusiastic contributor with the bat and in the field. Here is a player worth keeping tabs on.Team newsNiroshan Dickwella was set to be available after suspension, only he has got himself injured and is now out of series. In his place Sri Lanka have drafted in offspinner Dilruwan Perera, while also strengthening their fast-bowling options with the addition of Nuwan Pradeep and Nuwan Kulasekara to the squad. There is a chance one of these new additions will play – Kulasekara the most likely. There is also some concern about a niggle to Suranga Lakmal.Sri Lanka: (possible) 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Upul Tharanga (capt), 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Asela Gunaratne, 6 Milinda Siriwardana, 7 Dhananjaya de Silva/Sachith Pathirana, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Suranga Lakmal/Nuwan Pradeep, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Lakshan SandakanBangladesh may retain their winning XI, although Mashrafe Mortaza said he was not afraid to make changes if conditions demanded.Bangladesh: (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mosaddek Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mehedi Hasan, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Taskin AhmedPitch and conditionsA little extra grass has been left on the Dambulla surface, so it may not be as given to turn as the previous one. The weather is expected to be mostly fine.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have now lost their last three matches at Dambulla. They had lost two ODIs to Australia there last year. If Bangladesh whitewash Sri Lanka in the series, they will move to sixth on the ODI rankings list, and displace Sri Lanka to seventh.Quotes”We have [previously] broken our winning combination against India and South Africa in 2015. The wicket tomorrow may be different, so we have to keep that in mind.”
