Everything you need to know about Josko Gvardiol's salary at Manchester City
Josko Gvardiol was signed by Manchester City in the summer of 2023 following a string of impressive performances for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and a standout showing with the Croatian national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he helped his side reach the semi-finals, ultimately losing to eventual champions Argentina.
Since arriving in Manchester, the defender has become a regular starter, primarily featuring as a left-back in Pep Guardiola’s setup. In addition to his solid defensive contributions, Gvardiol has shown a knack for scoring, often netting important goals for the Premier League side.
Gvardiol is currently under contract with Manchester City until 2028, and he is handsomely rewarded for his performances.
But exactly how much does he earn?

Highest paid players in the world
Although Premier League salaries are high, neither player is among the top earners in global football.
The highest earner is Cristiano Ronaldo, the top scorer in the Champions League, now with Al Nassr. He is followed by Karim Benzema, his former Real Madrid teammate.
Riyad Mahrez, formerly of Manchester City, is third, with Senegalese players Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Leeds United went through the January transfer window, which officially closed for business last week, without bolstering their first-team squad.
The Whites opted not to make any additions to Daniel Farke’s squad as they aim for automatic promotion out of the Championship in the second half of the season.
They were, however, reportedly interested in a deal to sign Aston Villa attacking midfielder Emiliano Buendia, who played for the German head coach during their time together at Norwich City.
The Argentina international plundered 23 goals and 28 assists in 77 Championship matches for the Canaries, helping them to two titles, and Farke was looking to win a third promotion with the playmaker.
Unfortunately, however, Leeds were unable to get a deal over the line for the 28-year-old star, who eventually completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen on loan until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Whilst the Whites did not bring in any new players, they did have a chance to cash in on one of their first-team players and opted to keep hold of him.
Bid made for Leeds forward
Spain U21 international Mateo Joseph attracted interest from elsewhere during the January transfer window and, ultimately, remained at Elland Road beyond the deadline.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth relayed that the club confirmed that multiple Spanish clubs were keen on a deal to sign the 21-year-old marksman ahead of the second half of the season.
Transfer Focus
The reporter added that LaLiga outfit Real Betis, who have former Leeds central defender Diego Llorente on their books, made an offer of more than £10m in an attempt to snap the Whites academy graduate up.
That offer was turned down by Leeds, who decided to keep hold of the promising young talent, but it is unknown if there was a valuation that they would have considered selling him for.
Former Leeds man Aidy White stated “It’s a lot of money for an unproven striker” after hearing the news, which is particularly true when you consider that his current Transfermarkt value is just £2.9m.
At the age of 21, however, teams are also looking at the potential of a player and Joseph still has plenty of time left ahead of him in his career to develop, which was likely reflected in the bid that Real Betis made.
Leeds will now have to hope that the Spanish forward makes a jump in his development in the next 6-12 months to justify them not cashing in for a significant sum of money, as he has had his fair share of struggles this season.
Mateo Joseph's struggles this season
The former Espanyol attacker, who is the nephew of Emile Heskey, was made a regular part of the first-team squad in the 2023/24 campaign by Farke, but did not start any of his 20 appearances in the Championship.
Joseph did get the chance to showcase his quality from the start against Premier League giants Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, though, and caught the eye with two goals in a 3-2 defeat for the Whites.
After the likes of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville moved on from Elland Road in the summer, the Spanish dynamo was handed a big opportunity to make himself a regular in the team.
Joseph was named in the starting line-up for the opening eight matches of the current Championship season, which provided him with a great platform to prove to Farke that he was good enough to stay in the team.
Unfortunately, the young attacker only scored one goal, which came in a 2-0 win over Hull City, and he eventually lost his place in the side to Dutchman Joel Piroe.

As you can see in the table above, the former Swansea City marksman has significantly outperformed the Spaniard in the Championship this season, as the 21-year-old striker has struggled to finish the chances that have come his way.
Joseph is not the only player who Leeds may end up regretting not selling in January, however, as they should also have ruthlessly sold Austria international Max Wober.
Why Leeds should have sold Max Wober
It was reported in January that the former RB Salzburg defender was not completely happy at Elland Road and that he was open to a move away from Elland Road.
Leeds were interested in a deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi and Wober was touted as a possible makeweight to get a move over the line, as he had been on loan at the Bundesliga club in the 2023/24 campaign.
The Whites were unable to get that transfer done in the January transfer window and they did not opt to find another potential suitor for Wober, which meant that he remained in West Yorkshire.
Wober returned to the club last summer, after his season on loan in Germany, and has been rarely seen by Leeds supporters for various reasons. The defender has missed out on 13 matchday squads due to injury in all competitions, which is a number that is set to increase after it was confirmed on Monday that he needs knee surgery and will be out until the March international break.
He has also been an unused substitute on 14 occasions in all competitions for the Whites, which suggests that Farke does not view him as a frontline option.

As you can see in the table above, Wober is one of the top ten earners at Elland Road, despite not being a regular starter in the Championship.
The Austria international has only started two league matches and he was heavily criticised by Tony Dorigo on BBC Radio Leeds in his most recent start in the 3-3 draw with Hull City.
He said: “Wober was miles, miles off it today. You could see in his recovery, the way he was picking up people, everything was half-hearted, everything was slow. Whether he was tired, carrying an injury I don’t know.”
Leeds have not got enough back from Wober, in his performances or his availability, to justify him being one of the highest-paid members of the squad, which is why they should have ruthlessly cashed in on him in the January transfer window, if it was possible.

If his problems, on and off the pitch, continue to be an issue between now and the end of the season then there will also be a decision that has to be made in the summer window.
Tottenham Hotspur have made a late approach to sign a “threatening” new attacker, as Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou remains on the hunt for a fresh forward option before the transfer deadline at 11pm.

In a huge sigh of relief – following multiple, high-profile and public rejections from the likes of Mathys Tel and Fikayo Tomori – the Lilywhites sealed their first outfield signing of the January window with a late swoop for Kevin Danso.

The Austria international, who was on the verge of a move to Wolves before Spurs cheekily hijacked the deal in last-minute fashion, has put pen to paper on a loan move to N17 from RC Lens – which includes an obligation to buy for around £21 million in the summer.
“Brilliant [to get him], I think Kevin will be a great fit for us,” said Postecoglou before their 2-0 win away to Brentford on Sunday.

“We’re a little bit short at the back, have been for a while, and he’s just really experienced, a good one-on-one defender. I’ve said before that getting new players in gives us energy and will give the group energy.
“I’m looking forward to him being part of the group.”
With Danso through the door, Postecoglou certainly isn’t done there, and it is reliably believed that the Australian is after an upgrade in the final third.
Tottenham even made surprise contact over signing Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea, with another Premier League target now emerging.
According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, £120,000-per-week Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey is attracting late interest.
Tottenham make late approach for Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey
As per Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, Tottenham called Villa with an enquiry over signing Bailey. Unai Emery’s side aren’t budging so far, but the respected reporter also refuses to rule out a deadline day deal just yet.
“What I can tell you is that Man United and Tottenham, both clubs called to be informed on Bailey,” said Romano.

“But again, it depends on Aston Villa and at the moment, there are still no open doors. We will see on deadline day what’s going to happen on that one.”
The Jamaica international has scored just one goal and registered three assists in 29 total appearances this season, failing to replicate his form of last season, but Emery insists he is still a real threat.
“He is accepting my challenge to get the best of him like last year,” said Emery on Bailey.
“We need him. Leon is a very specific player for us as a winger, threatening in behind.”
Over the 2023/2024 season, Bailey racked up 10 goals and nine assists in 35 English top-flight appearances, so he can clearly turn it on.

The Ivorian winger gave Red Devils fans a sneak peek of the post-game celebrations on X after their side's dramatic 5-4 win over Lyon in the Europa League. Sharing a snap with Ugarte and Garnacho, Diallo congratulated the Uruguayan for his "sh*t goal" but accused the Argentinian of giving all United fans a scare when he failed to convert a chance during regular time. Had Garnacho scored, United could have killed the game with a 3-0 lead.

United fans will appreciate the glimpse inside a buoyant dressing room after a season with little cheer. Seeing Diallo around the squad is a happy development too as the Ivorian has been on the shelf since February with an ankle injury. Originally feared to be out for the rest of the campaign, the 22-year-old is taking part in light training sessions, and may be available in the next few weeks.

Following the end of April international break, the Houston Dash return with a home game against Angel City FC on April 12 and then go on the road to face KC Current on April 19. The Dash currently sit seventh on the league table with four points to their name and are five points behind league leaders Orlando Pride, who are yet to drop points.
Leeds United are heading into the second half of the season in pretty good shape. Daniel Farke’s side are top of the Championship table, three points clear of Burnley and Sheffield United, and are undefeated in seven games.
To ensure they can keep up that form between now and the summer and seal a return to the Premier League, the Whites are reportedly getting ready to raid the transfer market in January, and have been linked with several big names.
Among them is Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi and RC Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who is also thought to be attracting interest from Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
To fund moves for those players, Leeds will have to raise some money by selling some of their current crop. With that in mind, we have listed six players who could leave Elland Road this month.
1 Joe Gelhardt Linked with: Rangers, Portsmouth, Stoke
Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.
Since joining Leeds in 2020 from Wigan Athletic, Joe Gelhardt has struggled for minutes at Elland Road as the years have gone by.
After a respectable 22 appearances during his debut season at senior level, he made 19 the next year as he was shipped on loan to Sunderland.
In 2023/24, after Leeds were relegated back to the Championship, he then made only 13 appearances, while this term, he has not even managed 90 minutes.
Amid that ever-growing lack of game time, Gelhardt was being widely linked with a move away from Leeds before Christmas, with a number of clubs across Europe reportedly keen on acquiring his services.
According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Rangers, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End and two Belgian clubs were interested in moving for Gelhardt, and that the winger himself is open to the idea of calling time on his career at Elland Road.
2 Patrick Bamford Linked with: Genoa, Wrexham
It was only a few years ago that Patrick Bamford was setting the Premier League alight, scoring 17 goals to help Leeds to an impressive ninth-placed finish in 2020/21. These days, the 31-year-old is lucky if he gets called off the bench.
Bamford hasn’t started a Championship game all season for Leeds and has managed just 123 minutes off the bench, meaning more often than not, he’s left watching the action from the sidelines.
According to TEAMtalk, Genoa and Wrexham are prepared to offer Bamford an escape route out of Elland Road in January, with the two teams keeping an eye on his situation. Football Insider had previously reported in October that Bamford is also keen on leaving.
3 Pascal Struijk Linked with: Tottenham
Pascal Struijk of Leeds
Back in July, Tottenham Hotspur prised away one of Leeds’ star players from last season in the form of Archie Gray, with a £30 million fee simply too good to refuse. And according to reports in late December, Spurs are planning to swoop for another of Leeds’ star players in Pascal Struijk.
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey said: “Struijk is coming into his prime and has really been under the radar to a lot of people – not Leeds fans – but he is very much on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs. He is real quality and I am told Tottenham are amongst those who have checked on him.”
However, Bailey added that Leeds do not want to lose the 25-year-old, who has started all but one of their 25 Championship games this season, and are prepared to offer him a new contract.
“Clearly, Leeds want him to stay and will look to tie him down to a new deal, but him staying long-term will be dictated by Leeds getting back to the Premier League.”
4 Illan Meslier Linked with: Arsenal, Man Utd
According to a recent report in the last couple of weeks from TEAMtalk, Manchester United have revived their interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
The Frenchman was a previous target for the Red Devils before they decided to sign Andre Onana from Inter in summer 2023.
Arsenal are also thought to be interested in potentially making the goalkeeper their No 2, with Mikel Arteta thought to be happy with David Raya’s role in the Gunners squad.
United’s No 2, Altay Bayindir, who also joined the club in the summer of 2023 alongside Onana from Fenerbahce, has struggled when called upon this term, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he could be sold in January.
It’s easy to see why United might want Meslier. This season, he’s kept 14 clean sheets in 25 Championship games.
Maximilian Wober joined Leeds from RB Salzburg for £11m in January 2023, but was shipped to German side Borussia Monchengladbach barely six months later. Since his return to Elland Road in the summer, he’s found game time difficult to come by, making just one Championship start all term – mainly due to injury.
According to Austrian newspaper Kurier, as relayed by Sport Witness, Salzburg are now keen to take him back to the Red Bull Arena this month.
Salzburg director Rouven Schroder addressed the possibility of signing Wober (and Feyenoord’s Gernot Trauner) back in January, saying: “They are two very good players. We have a young team, so experienced players are of course exciting. But a lot of points have to be right, and we’ll examine transfers carefully.”
6 Junior Firpo Linked with: Real Betis
Junior Firpo’s Leeds future appears to rely on whether they get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season, according to Football Insider, do so, and he’ll stay, but fail, and he is expected to leave.
Now in the final six months of his deal at Elland Road, Firpo, formerly of Barcelona, is free to talk to new clubs, and is reportedly a target for Real Betis, another of his former clubs.
TEAMtalk has reported that with the 28-year-old full-back’s future currently “unsolved”, Betis are “leading the chase” for his signature. Should he re-join Betis, he would be reunited with two of his former Leeds teammates, with Marc Roca and Diego Llorente both turning out for the La Liga side.
